What a week for weather! First,
the day school was to resume, it
stormed and was cold and school
was cancelled. Tuesday arrived and
the wet heavy snow made it very
slippery for driving. Wednesday
arrived and it was better until the
freezing rain hit in the afternoon and
the sideroads became very
treacherous by bus time. Finally,
Thursday was a beautiful, warm day
and the roads were clear and dry.
Friday arrived and it started warm,
then the freezing rain arrived again
and made things a little tricky again.
It has been quite a week and we
experienced almost everything
weatherwise. Bitter cold, strong
winds, heavy snow, fog, rain,
freezing rain, warm temperatures
and sun!
The snowmobile trails were just
becoming great with the snowpack
and in just two days it's gone. I
understand snowmobile sales
skyrocketed during the last two
weeks of December and now they
can be put away again for awhile.
Hopefully there will be more snow
for the snowmobilers to enjoy in the
next few weeks.
I had the good fortune to see a not -
so -common sight for our area on
Tuesday morning. A bald eagle was
just starting to take flight from the
field as I was driving by. It was a
magnificent sight to see as it rose
into the air. The bird was in a field on
Canada Company Road. I keep
looking in hopes of seeing it again,
but no such luck so far.

When there's tension on the ice, nothing beats a good group hug to settle things, just ask the

Radars were able to post a 5-2 win for the hometown crowd. (Hannah Dickie photo)
IPM food court raises ,20,000

The Huron County Beef
Producers capped off a busy year
with one of their most challenging
tasks to date, working at a number of
points of interest at the 2017
International Plowing Match (IPM)
in Walton last September.
Former President Harvey Hoggart
told his fellow beef producers that
representatives of the organization
maimed two different displays in the
IPM's educational tent in an effort to
further education on the beef
industry.
First, there was a cow -calf display
in the one tent, allowing producers
to connect with students and adults
alike, telling them about the beef
industry and what it takes to raise an
animal in Huron County.
There were also Huron County
representatives involved in the
other part of the display, which
was connected to the Beef
Farmers of Ontario (BFO),
the industry's provincial body.
The organization's biggest
commitment, however, was at the
Huron County Federation of
Agriculture's food booth, which
served thousands of customers every
day with breakfast sandwiches in the
morning and a variety of other
products throughout the rest of the
day for the duration of the five-day
match.
Outgoing President Matt
Shortreed said that he felt the
organization did a good job and that
the food booth was a success despite
losing a day due to extreme weather.
The food court was comprised of
products from eight different
commodity groups, but it was beef
that was the bestseller, Hoggart said,
with the possible exception of
French fries.
Hoggart said that the group served
approximately 1,700 pounds of beef
by making its beef on a bun
sandwiches for customers. Due to
the loss of one day, however, there
was about $7,500 worth of cooked
beef left over by the end of the
match, all of which was donated to
area food banks
Through the work done at the food
court, Hoggart estimated that over
$20,000 was raised and could be
injected back into Huron County.
"I think it really shows that when
you work together, good things
happen," Hoggart said. "It was a big
undertaking and it took a lot of man-
hours, but I think we made Huron
County proud."
Shortreed agreed, but asked for
special recognition for Hoggart, who
worked very hard to put all of the
work together. Without Hoggart,
Shortreed said, it wouldn't have
been possible.
In a year full of events, such as the
organization's annual spring dinner
and dance, the summer barbecue and
a number of barbecues at
community events, in addition to a
tough weather season for producers,
Shortreed said it took a massive
amount of effort to pull everything
off in 2017.
try to gather monthly and celebrate
whoever is having a birthday during
the month. Gathering were Judy
Beuerman, Yolanda Gubelmann,
Karen Braecker, Carol Reinink and
Brenda Bernard. There was no
birthday to celebrate, so it was just
good chatter and fun.
The Cranbrook Dart Club began
its season on the first Wednesday of
January. They had 20 eager players
brave the cold, cold night. The top
team of the night was Marita LeFor,
Jim Blake and Brad Speiran with
five wins. The top scores were by Ev
Blake hitting 97 and Murray
Houston hitting 140 and the newest
player, Martin Boettcher hitting 134
for his first time out!
The second night of the season
was the wet, snowy, foggy night to
be out. They had 18 players brave
the weather. Team one of George
Zwep and John Gillis won five
games and Team eight of Brad
Speiran and Jim Blake also won five
games. The high scorers were a
family affair with Jane Zwep hitting
124 and husband George Zwep
hitting one better for 125.

Lots of family and friends had a
great time including auntie Judy
(Thamer) Emmrich and auntie
Shirley (Thamer) Heitlien.
Catarmarans, paddle boats,
playing in the ocean, a little rain
everyday and lots of sun and hot
temperatures made for a fantastic
time for the group! They even had a
great time on the Montgomery bus
that took them and picked them up
from the airport. What a great way to
travel as a group! Congratulations to
the newlyweds, who are living in the
Kinburn area.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were BJ DeJong, Sherri
