The Blyth Standard, 1930-03-13, Page 8PAGE 8'—THE BLYTH STANDARD --March 13, 1930 Nortloultural Convention IiY Dt1B13 MACH C41LLI SPllt (continued from last issue) 'frees, human Life, was discussed by C 11. Lowe, Toronto. Our great assets are the natural forest area and the proper setting of trees, A home is sadly unat- tractable without shade -giving qualities. Cultivate a genuine fondness for the love of gees, plan more liberally. Trees purify t hr- air, Have you ever stopped to think of the green leaf of the vegetable, the one and only one mediator between organ ie and inorganic. Green leaves are vitally connected with our very being, In spring time trees are a wonderful expression of lite. The speaker said a tree by the name of the Giant Cyprus was the means of hinging Columbus to America. For those who like the natural lay -nut fur landscape gardening have a scale and model shaped beds on rocks and paths. This idea has different surprises. Each unit complete in itself. Plant good mat - et tal at•ental and arrange your color effect. Group your English garden and make interesting sights, My impressions of Onisrio gar - delis are that they are some of the finest in the world, Mr, Wm. Hartry, of Sea - forth. gave anrintereating talk on begonias and their culture. There are three collec- tines. the pot variety; the Tuberus, and the Pendola, this is the largest type. Pi;int six inches deep and twenty inches apart, This was followed by an address by Mr. Moore, on 'The Peace Garden," The grace of all things shall endure, finite becomes infinite, peace is a vital expand- ing force. God inspired this thing and Ire will put it over. Flowers typify peace just as they typify friendship Why then should it not be absolutely logical and p. oper to have a garden, as a neutral ter- ritory, as a ' No Man's Land of Peace" on the borders of the Dominion of Canada, ole added that a number of thousand of acres had already been made and that it was now certain that it would embrace four hundred acres. The body that spon- sors the proposal at this outward and vis- ible sign of the peaceful feeling between the Dominion and United States is the National Association of Gardening. The following lines express the friendship of Canada. A LAND WITHOUT A LINE You came to the land of the Maple Leaf, A nd we met you with a smile. We took your hands in a (fierily grasp, And hoped you'd stay a white, Though you live 'neath the Stars and Stripes, And we 'neath the Union Jack, We speak the same old mother tongue, Uncle Sam and Jack Canuck. netween us runs three thousand miles. A line from coast to coast, Whcrenever a fort and never a ,;un Is seen, we proudly boast. No bayonet with itsmurderous steel No sentry anywhere, And we live in peace on either side, As though no line were there. Side by side for a hundred years, May it be a thousand more, With never a ward to cause us grief, Nor any to make us sore. We have lived, and still the Union Jack, And Stars and Stripes unfurled. Have flown together on the line. The wonder of the world. Please God till earth's last sun shall set And earth's last tear be shed, May we two nations still he friends, When to heaven Thou call'st Thy dead, Until on that eternal morn, As its glorious sun shall shine, Thy nations meet around Thy throne, On a land without a line. Insects of Interest to the Flower Grow- er was given by Arthur Gibson. Ottawa. This was followed by a lecture "The Beautification of Unsightly Surroundings" by Dr. F. E. Bennett, of St. Thomas. He wore a Talisman rose plucked (torn his own garden and true to type, He gave many illustrations of the surroundings of his hcme town, of paths and flower beds and long spaces of grass and trees which go to show what can be accomplished by people who are embued with civic pride, Delphiniums illustrated then took place, An open discussion then took place when one of the delegates said it would be a good plan to observe three cardinal prin- ciples, standing, speaking and shut up. Catholic Bishop Pays Tribute An item that will be of unusual interest and gratification to many Blyth people appears in the March issue of the Cathol- ic Record. The item has refrnce to Bishop -elect O'Connor, and to his former teacher, the late Joseph Stalker, former principal of Blyth Public School some years prior to his death. The late Mr. Stalker was one of the most -beloved of teachers, not only by his pupils and teachers, but by the public in general. Rev, James T. Foley, D. D., one of the editors of The Catholic Record, published at London, in reterring to the elevation of the noted son of the church, has the follow ing to say: "We asked the Bishop elect to tell us what teacher exercised the greatest in- fluence in the formation of his charac- ter." "This is the letter he wrote in reply; it is characteristic and revealing. It will be read with interest and sympathy by Cath- olics and non-Catholics." "1 owe too much to too many teachers in later life to risk a distinction that might be invidious and unjust. My memory then, carries me back to the elementary school, and excludes the many valuable educational influences of later years, "MY first teacher in the elementary schools was Charles Fraser, a brilliant young man. But, there is in my memory. a teacher in an ungraded country school in which he prepared me for an entrance to Normal certificate. He was a wonder- 1uiteacher. To use a strange paradox, he could teach more than he knew. His name was Joseph Stalker. He died a few years ago in Ingersoll, though he was a Protestant, a Catholic Bishop elect is glad to place upon his grave tribute of grati- tude and reverence." I remain, Faithfully yours' D.
