Death of Mr. Andrew Reld,
The following obituary notiee of Mr.
Andrew Reid, late of kfullett, appeared
in the Gazette ef Conde, Assa.
44 Last week we briefly -recorded We
death of Mr. Andrew Reid, Ill* unex.
peoted end of our reopeeted friend and
neighbor gave quite a shook to the
community. Although 11 18 only two
years sloe° he oarae into the Carnduff

three daughters, the family has been long

esteem of all and the mourners have the
sympathy of every one in their great

Order, of which body the deceased was
a consoientious member. -Following the
coffin • was a tOn array of rigs witb
neighbors and townspeople. The sea,
vice at the home and graveside was
impressively performed by the Rev, F,
E. Pratt, vicar of Gainsboro, the family
being members of the Ceurch of Eng -
laud, after whieh the Orangemen took
charge and performed the ritual of the
order in a very reverent and syropathe-
tie manner. The resene at the grave.
aide was very touching. The six eons
of deceased acted as pall -bearers and
lowered their father into the grave
while the other mourners were the
three daughters and a daughter.in.law.
The body was enclosed in a beautiful
cesket supplied with the other furnish-
ings by Mr, J. H. Taylor, The late 'Ur,

Be homesteaded, as did also all his
sons, but one. • Slaving been but two
years in the west his hetnestead duties
are not completed. We have no doubt
that the goverpment will make the best
arrangements possible with regard to
the homestead under the sad Giresun-

Dominion Experimental Farms.
Uniform Co•Operatiye Dairy
Herd Test Record. •
The attention of Canadian farmers
• interested in the development of Cana-
da's greatest industrial factor? the Dairy
Herd, is dravvnto the following letter,
recently sent out to a few formers in
each province of the Dominion from the
Experimental Farm, Ottawa;
• Dear Sir, -Your name bass been band-
ed to me os that of a farroer who is
particularly interested in the produc.
don of milk. It is a vrell known fact
•that the great majority of dairy herds, if
eve mayjudge by cash returns alone, are
i
losing nvestments. It is, however,
certain that this need not be the case if
sufficient care and intelligence are
exercised in selecting and feeding the
coves intended for milk producers. So,
in order to be able to work more effect-
ively toward improvement, along this '
line I am desirotut of securing some
exact information as to the methods of
feeding followed in different parts of
Canada. • I should, therefore, be rauch
indebtedeo you if you wculd write me
briefly upon the foliowitig points :
1 -Kind and quantity , of reugkiage
• ration • fed • to your milking. COWS in
Winter.
4 -Kind mad quantity of grain fed ,
your milking bows in (a) suinmer, .(b)
win ter .
3 --Quantity of milk yielded per cow
yearly. ,.
• 4 -Do you use pure brad bulls? What
• breed
• 5 --What use do you make Of by-pro-
ducts (whey, ete.) if you have any.
• Would you care to carry on a simple
dairy herd test during 1901, in conjurio-
tion with dairymen in different parts of
Canada and us here? the only expense
would be a spring balance for weighing
•the milk. We would furnish you with
blanks eacb month for' keeping the
•records. • If Canadian dairymen aro t
raise the average yield of their herds
and make a profit it must be by first
• findieg out what their individual cows
are doing. If the cow is not paying her
keep and leaving;a good pi:refit for •the
dairymen, either the cow no good or
the dairyman is not feeding her proper,
ly. • If you are really interested in the
dairy business and care to go into a co-
operative test as mentioned above I
should be pleased to send you further
• particulars re the same. In any case I
should like to hear from yoe on the
aforementioned points.
The replies elicited by this • letter
were of such a character as to indicete
the advisability of making the matter
more public. With such an end in view
the foregoing is given for publication.
. It i hoped that many of our dairy
farmers may aee the importance and
necessity of Reepingsuch records as are
suggested and that, they may think it
advisable to join in this Co -Operative
Dairy Herd Record or rest.
Any farmer interested may obtain full
particulars by addressing Tbe Agricul-
turalist, Experimental Fenn, Ottawa,
