breeding thorohreds for many years
and has made a success of it. He was

Bated family of Shorthorns, a famous
English breed which formerly com-
manded faney prices but degenerated

ing. The Bates cows were good milk-
ers but, did not fatten so well as the
Scotch Shorthorns. Mr.Grainger,
who is a good specimen of the sterling
Yorkshireman, is one •of our beat
known farmers and of his son it may
truly be said that he's a chip off the
old block.
