• HOW FOrmers' flare Frefited
By the removal of the quarantine
and the improvement of the cold stor
age system, for both of which tb
Laurier government is entitled to cre
dit, the farmers of this Dominion
• have profited immensely. Here ar
• some facts which cannot be contro
. su piled wheh other Markets ate con-
verted, and which should be care-
fully considered by every farmer :—
In the year ending June 30, 1:!0,
Canada exported 5,889,241 lbs of butter
,at an average ploy of 178 cents per lb
the six months ending 'December
81, 1899, we exported 22,96.5,987 lbs, a
an average of 20.1 cents per •lb. The
return to the Canadian farmers' from
the export trade in butter tor the fis
cal year 1895 1890 was $1,902,089; for
the six months endirig December 81st
' last, 84,675,807. Thus the farixters
• Canada increased their revenue in the
first half of the fiscal year 1: 1900 by
the min of $3,623,718 in the single item
of butter, as conaparedwith the entire
year 1895 1896.

Published returns show that under
the present system of cold storage
Canadian butter has gained from 14
• to 25 shillings per 100 lbs., as et:Inver-
ed witb Australian butter, and from
7 to 14 shillings per 100 lbs.as compar-
ed with Danish, these two being lead -
'sing competitors of the Dominion in
eGreat Britain. On a low estimate
Canadian butter has 'gained about
. cents per lb. in the race. From this
it will be seen that on the 22,965,987 lbs
.of butter exported from July to De-
cember, 1899, the clear eain to the
- Canadian farmers is $688,979. •
Shortly after he Assumed the duties
of office, Hon. Mr Fisher succeeded in
baying the quarantine against Cana-
• Alan cattle en t eritig the 'United States
.irenioved. This quarantine had been
'tin operation since February, 1893, to
lithe complete demoralization of the
"Canadian cattle- trade. During the
four and a half years ending Decem-
ber 31, 1896, Canada exported to the
United States 264,503 cattle and have
'received for them $3,710,066,
Dating the last 18 months before
*he removal of the quarantine. the'
' 'average price reeeived wee 8832 per
head. During the last 18 months
of the period 'duce the removal
of the quarantine the average price
hag been $15 per head, a gain of 06 68
rper head The advantage is all the
...greater when it is remembered that
•t-niany of the cattle were not suited for
athe English market, and the eopening
'
-of a market for them meant even
=ore to the Canadian fanners than
the figures show. Since it is the ex-
port price which largely determines
the price of cattle slaughtered and sold
in the country as well, the apparent
gain to tbe Canrdian farmer as a re.
suit of the removal of the quarantine
accomplished ny Mr Feeler was lest
year about $7.414,800 or 5608 per head
on the total of 1,110,000 cattle slaup,ii-
tered or eold in Canada during the
twelve mcnths.
Moreover, the value of the stock all
over the Dominion has been enhanced.
In the opinion of Mr Iroriaides, one of
the largest exporters in the trade, the
added value resulting from the remov-
al of the quarantine is at least $1.0 per
i
head of the horned cattle now n the
Dominion. This means a total in.
• crease of $40.367,100 in the wealth of
the farmers of Canada as a result of
tha effcrts of Hon. Mr Fisher during
hie two weeks' visit in We.sleington in
the winter of 1896. The ,farmers of
°Anode are beginning to see this, and
Mr Fisher is nature ly not in favor
'with the disappointed politicins who
allowed the Canadian cattle trade to
go to min because they leaked either
the will or .the ability to have the
quarantine removed.
