'HE` IGNORED TRADITION.
The Little Judge Was Oonrinoed and Own•
sled she Supreme Court.
Just as Shakespeare has been aeoepted
for years and years as the deoiding umpire
in meet matters literary, so the Nebraska
people had grown to look upon the su-
preme court of their state as the fountain-
head of wisdom whose opinions ooeld
not be gainsaid. It is a way people have
of regarding supreme courts In most states,
as a matter of Mot.
William Aletadt, a little German, whose
readiest identifleation among his people
was by the name of "Bismarck," was not
one who cared,,vermuoh for tradition, and
one summer day, after having been ha-
rangued by two lawyers until he was al-
' most bursting with tblrst, he made a de-
oision which brought him fame. It does
not make any special difference what was
the question at inane. It was something
about a dog. There was a sensible side to
it and a technical lido. The "technical"
lawyer presented bushels and tons of au-
thorities, and finally wound up with a tri-
nxnphant declaration that the supreme
court had decided on a similar case before,
and had deolded his way.
When he had sat down, "Bismarck,"
with a sigh of reifeP,ss.Sd . "1
decides for de
oder feller. Come on, goys, let's Bake a
drink."
"But," cried the defeated lawyer in
astonishment, "I tell you, your honor, that
the supreme court has decided exactly
opposite."
"My frtent,"said "Bismarck," "in shen-
eral I haf somesympaties mit dot subreme

WISE MEN KNOW
It is folly to build upon a poor foundation
either in architecture or in health. A found-
ation of sand is insecure, and to deaden sym-
toms by narcotics and nerve compounds is
equally dangerous and deceptive. The true

GENTLEMEN, -My beart troubled inc with
violent palpitation, shortness of breath and

distressing symptoms have entirely disap-

To Clear the Complexion.
Dandelion wine is excellent for persons
who have liver trouble, and the following
recipe is given for making the wine;
Gather 3 quarts of dandelion buds; at night
pour 4 quarts of boiling water over them,
and allow it to stand until morning; strain
through a cloth; sllco into it 3 lemons
from which the seeds have been removed,
and add 834 pounds of sugar. Put on the
fire until the sugar Is dissolved; then pour
into a covered jar, and let it remain for 12
or 14 days. Strain again, pour into bottles
and cork when the fermentation is com-
plete.
Dose, one wineglassful twice a day. It
is said by many grandmas who profess to
know that there is nothing like this as
medicine to clear the complexion. -New

UNTOLD MISERY
FROM
RHEUMATISM
C, H. King, Water Valley, Mies., oared by
Ayer's Sarsaparilla
" For five years, I suffered untold misery
from muscular rheumatism. I tried every
known remedy, consulted the best physi•
chns, visited Hot Springs, Ark., three times,
spending $1000 there, besides doctors' bills;
but could obtain only 'temporary relief. My
flesh was wasted away so that I weighed
only ninety-three pounds ; my left arm and
leg were drawn out of shape, the muscles
being twisted rep in knots. I was nimble to
dress myself, except with assistance, and
could only hobble about by using a cane. I
had no appetite, and was assured, by the
doctors, that I could not live. The pains, at
times, were soawful that I could procure
ro
relief only by moans
of hypodermic injec-
tions of morphine. I had my limbs bandaged
in clay, In sulphur, to poultices; but these
gave only temporary relief. After trying
everything, and suffering the most awful
tortures, I began to take Ayer's Sarsaparilla.
Inside of two months, I was able to walk
without a cane. In three months, my limbs
began to strengthen, and in the course of a
year, I was cured. My weight has Increased
to 185 pounds, and I am 110W able IO do my
full day's work as a railroad blacksmith."

Ten Years Since.
Hietory of a Long Malady Given In Laoid
words by Mrs Albert Armstrong,
Hawthorne Row. Don Mills
Rd. Todmorden, Ont.
Than Mr and Mrs A. Armstrong there
are probably no better known or more gen-
erally respected inhabitants of Todmorden.
Mr Armstrong until lately was engaged in
farming on the York town line between
York and Soarboro, where he was born and
brought up.
Mrs Armstrong gives the tollowing ac-
count of her heart and nerve troubles,
their origin and results. We plve in her
words the account as she gave it to our re-
presentative. Said Mrs Armstrong: "Ten
years ago I was taken seriously ill with
measles complicated with Inflammation of
the lungs. Since then my heart has been
affected, and I have never fait strong. I
was troubled with palpitatio i so badly that
I could hardly draw a long breath. My
heart fluttered very much, and I was oftou
attacked with spells of yyeariness and diz.
zinese, so that sometiinee I was unable to
walk. My eyes seemed to be covered as if
with a mist, and I was subject to terrible
pains in the backof my head and through
my forehead. Cold perspiration would
break out on my hands and feet, and I lost
my appetite.
Mentally I became despondent, havi g -a
oonatant dread unforeseen about to happen.
My sleep was poor and disturbed by fright-
ful dreamb. In fact my nerves were oorn-
plets ly unstrung. I could not bear even the
slightest noise. It was while in this con-
dition that I got a box of Milburn's Heart
and Nerve Pills through the kindness of
Mre Vanhorn of thie place, at Mr H. W.
Love's drug store, corner of Broadview and
Danforth avenues. Sinoe taking them I
have steadily and rapidly improved. The
improvement ie marked, indeed, for I feel
daily getting stronger and better. My ap-
petiteis becoming healthy, my nerves strong-
er and steadier, and the heart trouble gives
me scaroely any annoyance at present. More
than that, I am thankful to feel cheerful in
mind, and more confident in the future. In
fact I am stronger and better in every way.
I oannot too highly express my happiness
in the marvelous change which Milburn's
Heart and Neave Pills have effected in my
case. They have truly helper) me, and I am
exceedingly thankful that I am able 10
give this testimony that otners suffering
similarly may receive benefit. (Signed) Mre

Photographic Carleatiaree.
To make a picture of a person apparent-
ly standing inside a bottle, with only the
head showing, requires two negatives.
Take a bottle of dark glass and photo-
graph it, placing it near enough to the
camera to obtain a large picture of the
bottle. Next make a photograph of the
person, this tone placing the subject at
such a distance from the camera the i his
body, as shown on the .focusing glass, ap-
pears about the size of the picture of the
bottle. A white background, or one of a
uniform tint, should bo used for both pic-
tures. The picture of the bottle is first
printed on a sheet of sensitive paper, then
take the negative of the person photo-
graphed, block out all the body, leaving
only the head. For this use Gilion's
opaque, Strauss' marl, or any nonaotinie
paint, and apply it to the glass aide of the
negative, Take the paper on which the
picture of the bottle has been printed,
place it on the blocked negative in such a
way that the bead appears to be coming
out of the neck of the bottle. The result
will bo a picture of a person apparently
standing inside a bottle with his head
above the neck of the bottle. A hat, a box,
a tin can, a half open book, a scrap basket
and similar objects may be photographed,
and for a Fourth of July party one could
use a cannon cracker, rocket, etc., in place
of the bottle.-Harper'a Round Table.
THEY ARE GOOD
Mr Jas. Hagan, the well known ex-ald•
erman of Kemptville, Ont., says: -"For
some years I have been greatly trcubled
with pain across my back. Urinary troubles
caused me much loss of sleep, and I suffer-
ed from a tired worn out feeling. Doan's
Kidney Pills gave me relief in a short time.
The pain in my back hue disappeared and
I feel that I would be doing wrong not to
recommend them to others suffering as I
did. They are the best medicine I ever
used."
OSTRICH PLUCKING.
The Process Ie Not Cruel and as Unat-
tended by Vlolenoe.
My attention has boon called to a leaflet
entitled "Birds," in which it is stated
that "recently facts have Dome to light
which prove that the plunking of ostrich
plumes causes great suffering to tbe, blyds,
which have to be bound during the opera-
tion to prevent their defense of them-
selves."
A long residence in the ostrich farming
districts in South Africa gives me author-
ity to say that so far as I have observed
no suffering whatever is caused by ostrich
plucking. It is to the farmer's interest to
allow the feathers to grow the legitimate
time, and the plunking thereafter is easy.
When the quill Is ripe in its sheath (about
every seven months), it must be drawn,
or if allowed to grow an appreciable time
it will trail and be trodden underfoot and
will thus be rendered worthless.
Tho process of plucking is simple and
unattended by violence.
A sack is lightly thrown over the head
of the bird, which is kept in camp for tho
time being, and while the farmer holds
the sack in pisco the assistants draw the
feathers. The mak 1s need because the
bird is restless and excitable and would
certainly stampede or show fight if it saw
a number of people in its vicinity. But it
can be safely said that no cruelty is neees-
eery, the feathers often dropping at the
mere touch, and none Is practloed. Of
course ono cannot guard against a cruel
man, and as sheep shearing may be made
intolerable, ostrioh plucking may also be
done viciously.
Tho ostrich farmer, however, is humane,
• and if he were not it would be unprofitable
to pluck before the feathers have ripened.
I have heard stories of the cruelty attend-
ing the pit/eking of ostriches in Cairo --
how the feathers aro out from the body be-
fore the q a
will and sheath hope hardened.
dened.
I know nothing of this, but from a busi-
ness point of view at leaat I can hardly
credit 1t. Let me affirm that in South
Africa, the largest promo market in the
world, no cruelty in ostrioh pluoking is
exercised. --Boston Traneoript.

The corporation counsel of Chicago bas
appointed a young woman -lawyer as his
assistant. Having been called to explain
his conduct in thus preferring a woman
lawyer before one of the predominating sex
in the profession, the chief law officer of the
city took occasion to say that he selected
her, not because she was backed by any in-
fluence, political or otherwise, but simply
because in his opinion she was better fitted
than any other attorney he knew to dis-
charge the duties of the office. She has
been engaged in law practice in Chicago

There was an appaling loss of sheep and
cattle on the great western ranches the
past winter. The loss of Texas and Utah
cattle reached 40 per cent, through cold and
hunger. In seasons of unusual severity
snow covers the wild grass 80 deep that the
cattle can no longer scrape it aside with
their feet and nose to get the dried herbage
which is all they have to keep them alive.
Then they simply round up their backs and
huddle together till they die of mingled
cold and hunger. To the humane mind
there is something awful in the thought of
this murdsroue system. Those accustomed
to it becomehsrdened to it. Prof. T. t- haw
of the Minnesota Agricultural College, calls
on the U. S. Government to intervene, and
pass a law compelling those who use the
public ranches to provide winter food and
shelter for cattle and sheep.
