CAMERA UNDER TILE SEA
PHOTOGRAPHS NOW READILY 8E -
CURED AT THE OCEAN'S BOTTOM.
An Ingontou,/ evlee for Obtaining a
Strong Light Where ilio Sun Will Not
Penetrate-Plolures Taken in a Storm.
The stupendous progress of maritilno
science during this last decade made re-
liable illustrations of objects under
water very desirable, and to obtain such
pictures photography was of course, re-
sorted to. It was by no means an easy
matter, but with the apparatus herein
described the problem appears to have
been successfully solved.
An ordinary magazine camera, of
small size, and adjustable to focus at
various distances, is inclosed in a water-
tight metallic case, which is furnished
with plate glass lights on each side.
Two buttons on the outside of the Me-
tallic ease work respectively the shut-
ter and the mechanism for focusing.
Where the Metallic case is pierced a
layer of compressed oakum prevents
moisture from entering. A metallic
tripod ot'suflicient weight to insure sta-
bility completes the outfit. The photo-
graphic plates used for this purpose are
specially prepared, and are considerably
more sensitive than ordinary dry -plates.
1 or Certain contingencies a lighting
apparatus has been constructed, which
for ingenuity rivals the camera. An
ordinary magnesium flashlight lamp is
PHOTOGRAPHY UNDER THE SEA.
fastened to the top of a barrel of about
50 gallons capacity, which is weighted
down with shot and also serves as a
reservoir for the air supply of the lamp.
This lamp is protected by a glass globe,
which is fastened hermetically over
lamp and spigot, and is also used as a
reflector. A rubber bulb containing
the magnesium powder and a rubber
tube leading to the pointed metal tube
in the flash lamp furnish the metals to
produce a flashlight by simply pressing
the bulb.
The timing of the exposures presents
another serious difficulty. At a depth
of three to four feet an exposure of tea
minutes will give good results ; at a
depth of 15 to 18 feet the exposure
should last not less than 30 minutes
when the sun is brightest. Even at
this depth it becomes necessary to apply
a plate of blue glass in front of the lens
in order to obtain clear pictures. In
deeper regions photography would be
impossible, but for the flashlight appar-
atus described aboVe. It saves tune
and trouble, and good pictures have
been taken even during storms and
without appreciable light from above.
WHAT " HORSE POWER" MEANS.
IIow the Unit of 94.,eeuring Power Was
Established.
The unit of measurement of mechan-
ical power was introduced by James
Watt and called a "horse -power." How
this name originated is well told in The
Magdeburger Zeitung. One of the first
steam engines built by Watt was to fur•
nish the power for the pumps in the
brewery at Witbread, England, which
up to that time was supplied by horses.
The contract called for as much power
as furnished by a strong horse, and in
order to get as powerful an engine as
possible the brewer ascertained the
amount of labor performed by a horse by
working an exceptionally strong horse
for full eight hours without a stop, urg-
ing the animal with a whip until it was
exhausted, and thereby succeeded in
raising 2,000,000 gallons of water. Con-
sidering the height of the reservoir this
labor represents the present unit of a
"horse -power," that !s, the lifting of
163/ pounds to a height of about throe
feet per second. This result, however,
was obtained by exceptional methods
and should not be considered the basis
of measurement of mechanical power.
Actually the power of the average
horse is barely sufficient to' lift 65 to 70
pounds three feet high per second.
A ROPE OF CORK.
A BM Saving on Shrpbeard by Tills New
!Aloe,
It frequently happens that ropes
thrown out from boats are lost, as they
sink at once it the end on hoard slips
frotn the sailor's hands. To prevent
this ropes are now made of cotton over
a center of small pieces of cork, which
cannot sink. The many advantages
offered by this improvement aro obvi-
ous. For life saving apparatus the
adoption of such rope will be especially
useful. As it will float under all circum-
stances, such a rope will show a lost an-
chor or dragnet. or if rolled up may
even he used for a life buoy. If the
cork centerpieces are even and well -fit-
ted cylindrical pieces they will not in-
terfere in the least either with the sup-
pleness or the strcngh of the rope. A
test has shown it to stand even a greater
strain than an ordinary rope of the
same thickness.-Chronik der Zeit.
Advnatage of Petroleum.
His experiments to ascertain which is
the best motor for aviation purposes
have satisfied Mr. Quentin that, practi-
cally, petroleum is the most compact
and lightest source of energy, as it sup-
plies 12,000 calories per kilo against the
7000 of coal. He attaches a great deal of
importance, in the combustion of petro-
leum for motive nurpores, to the suppres-
sion of the white flame and obtains a
perfect combustion with only a horse-
power per hour is experimentally found
to be 0.24 francs. Mr. Quentin's appar-
atus is also applicable to the combustion
of heavy oils with a strong proportion of
coal tar. The combustion is said to be
so complete that no smell is preceptiblo.
