Saved Her Life.
Mre. C. J. WOOLDRIDGE, of Wortham;
Texas, saved the life of ger child by the
ase of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral,
"One of my children had Croup. The
ease was attended by our physician, and was
supposed to be well under control. One
night I was startled by the child's hard
breathing, and on going to it found it stran-
gling. It had nearly ceased to breathe.
had become that
in spite of the medicines
given, I reasoned that such remedies would
be of no avail. Raving part of a bottle ot
Ayer's Cherry pectoral in the house, I gave
the child three doses, at short intervals, and
anxiously Waited results. From the moment
the Pectoral was given, the child's breathing
grew easter, and, in a short time, she was
sleeping quietly and breathing naturally.
The child is alive and well to-daYy, and I do
not hesitate to say that Ayer's Cherry Pec-
tpral saved her lite."

Ottawa.
T n, In to to; last week.
Clear, cold and crisp is the atmos-
phere in the capital at present. The
present week llae been at very eventful
one. (!,Ll nivel week ! The city is filled
with visitors. A. great ni my from' the
northern and eastern states ; also
many from the Mitratinie Provinces
and a multitude from Montreal and
Toronto. The opening wet4 accompani-
ed with au ice storm, a natural intro-
ductory to a wintery carnival. Desp(te
the unfavorable weather a vast crowd
assembled to witness the formal open-
ing This consisted in manning the
main arch with snow -shoes in costume
accompanied. The ''Ice Castle" is
situated on "Nepeau Point" overlook-
ing the Quebec city of Hull, separated
from "Parliament Hill" by the Rideau
Canal. It is built somewhat after the
pattern of Fiolyruod Palace. At night
it i3 illuminated by electric light. A
"search light" on the main tower of
the Parliament buildings sweeps the
whole eituattion in an iudiscribably
grata 1 in Loner. All the heeling tobog-
gan slides of the city are chartered by
the City Council for the week, in
addition to which a new and delightful
slide was built on Nepeau Point. All
of these are free to the public.
A body of police are stationed at the
head of each slide to assist in loading,
and also to regulate the crowd. The
Electric Street Ry. Oo. have kindly
added an extra service, and run their
ears with great despatch. The dee
tion and illumination of the who city
cannot be painted in words, least
not in the few words your humble
scribe has at his disposal). Art, nature,
men and means all combine to' make
the scone enchanting. The city at
times is bathed in a flood of Music.
On Wednesday at 3 p. in, sharp a
gorgeous trmule m drive started from
Parliament Square and Made a partial
circuit of the city.
Some fine horsemanship and horses
were displayed. Accompanying . this
was mush wealth and beauty.
In the evening ai Bend Tournrncnt
was held in the rink.. Some fine selec-
tions were given.
Perhaps the most prominent feature
of the week occurred on Friday after-
noon. This wits the "allegorical drive."
Almost every public and business de-
perttnent of Ottawa and Hull were re-
presented. It called to the mind a
great nanny of the occupations of per-
sons in town and a nnitry. In some in-
stances it took 10 horses to draw .the
vehicles. The parade had aL number
of excellent bands of music distributed
along its ranks at pleasing intervals.
Many, very many, of the costumes
were of a striking character.
15onFrid,ty evening thestornting
of the Ct,stle became the centre of at-
traction.
Tate attacking pert y crossed the
river 011 the ice, scaled the cliff, were
met again and by volleys from the
battery and gar•t•ison. Finally aurid
terrible explosions the castle was cap-
tured.
The carnival proper close.9 to -day
(Saturday) had notwithstanding the
fact that the nrer•calt•y stands at 10e
blow Zero the visitors appear to he de-
parting with the satisfy t tion that, they
have had a pleasant NI!. I!. in the "Paris

A TWtT1 BORN IN A GOAL MINE.'
The Other, Very Strange to Say, was
Bern Ahov■ Ground.
Mrs. Ratharina Schmidt is the mother
of bouncing twin babies. There is no-
thing remarkable in that, but when is
mentioned the fact that one of the uuw
arrivals was born down in a coal min;!,
100 feet beneath the ground and that
the other Was born on terra firma at
the mouth of the coal shaft a few min-
utes later the double birth becomes
unique.

ed to work extra time. He sent word to
his with, with a request that 811., send
him luncheon.
Mrs. Schmidt prepared the ?edibles
and then decided to carry theta to the
urine herself, as she had done many
times before. For Mrs. Schmidt is
young and Mrs. ; •Innidt is loving, and
her robustou•t,• .,ttsbaud is a hero in
her eyes whom sit • cannot see too often.
Arriving at the mine, she thought to
surprise Mtn by taking. the Itutelt down
the shaft and delivering it in p.'rsou.
She entered the iron cage used for
hoisting; purposes and was lowered safe-
ly into the bowels ot the earth. Site

hero, besmeared with the inky marks
of honest toil.
"John," said she, "I have brought the
lunch."

"Why, Katharine." said Joint, sur-
prise and pl 'asure mingling in his tones,
"is it you?"
"
There was no doubt of it—Ratharina
was tier's.
Before another word was uttered the
glad light in Ratharina's eyes gave
place to a troubled look, and with a lit-
tle shriek site fell upon the beaten floor
of that coal thine.
The husbnud rushed to her side, as
did his companions. They lifted her
tenderly, and were about to plata• her
Irl the cage airain when she struggled
to be free. They laid her dotvu, and
several rushed to the cage to go for
medical assistance, but before the cage
had started on its upward journey to tile
earth and fresh air above, the event
chronicled in the begiuuiug had hap-
pened.
There, in the cavernous depths of the
coal mine, in the twilight shadows of
the flickering lamps on the miners'
caps; there, with the miners standing;
around like sturdy phantoms in silhou-
ette, upon a pile of coarse straw, was
born an heir to the house of Schmidt—a
bouncing baby boy.
As soon as possible the helpless onus
were placed in the cold iron cage and
hoisted from the gloomy depths to the
bright sunshine above. Messengers
were sent hurrying for a physician and
for a conveyance to take the young.
natural born coal miner and his mother
home.
Then there was another- surprise. Be-
fore either doctor or vehicle arrived
Mrs. Schmidt gave birth to another
chubby boy to divide honors with the
brother who had been ushered into the
world in the night blackness of a coal
mine. The second birth tools place
within a few feet of the edge of the

A NEW WOMAN.
Site liaa r'l ended with Enthusiasm Ilio
Privilege „f raeniu,.
Diderot, in Ills rhapsodical fragment,
"Sur les Fetnine;•" while exalting their
qualities of tenderness, of devotion and
of ecstasy, concludes by saying that
".they are more civilized than men on
the surface, but within have remained
title savages. ' From which it seems to
follow that the road which would lead
them back to the age of instinct is more
direct and a good deal ehort,•r than the
way of the skulking creature, man. Or,
+ts Burdach observes, with his sure
touch, "though women do not ts•tid to
vary so touch as sten, when they do
vary they Gall into an extreme."
The wits and philosophers of the
eighteenth century in France exemplt-
li (l not only the; law by which genius
often displays a certain feminine solt-
ness,'but also the tact that the brains of
Fresehntou and Frenchwomen are much
upon an average. Hence, on the one
hand, "masculine •thought" -so abhor-
rent to the New Woman—did set in !no-
tion those ss sterns and sketch those
Utopias, which account for the idylls of
Les Charmettes, the 1Vatteaulike pas-
torals of the Little 'Trianon, the heroics
of "Corinne" and the rights of the te-
ntnle, as surnlned up in her seventeen
articles by Mlle. Olympe de Gorges.
But, on the other hand, it' the brains of
the two sexes had been decidedly
unequal in weight and itt the number
of convolutions it is probable that men
might have preached in vain for want
of an audience.
Women cut hardly take to them-
selves, thorefore,.the glory of' the trt•sh
and glad tidings, the liherty, equality
and tree union which makit the nttb•
stance of that evangel. Yet now, as
always, they have proved to be fervent
disciples, energetic, unrelenting, self -
convinced. They have pleaded with
equal enthusiasm the privileges of
genius and tite wrongs of their OWII
sex. They are willing to forego the
honors decreed to them by chivalry. it'
