George W. Curtis Meets a Girl In Blue at
a Street Corner—A Dull Member of a
Smart Fraternity --It is a lineation of a
Nickel.
It was only au aocldent, reports a writer
for the Washington Post, that brought
George W. Curtis to the corner of Seven-
teenth and G streets at all. With nothing
else claiming him that Sunday evening,
he had strolled that way with a friend,
and was now about to take a horse oar
and return to his office on F street, smoke
a cigar, and consider his business pro-
gramme for the coming week. The car
was slow in making its advent.
While George W. Curtis Waited a pretty
girl came up. She, too. had plane which
included the street car; and so standing
a safe ten feet from George W. Curtis the
pretty girl shared his vigil. She paid
no heed to George W. Curtis but he
noticed that she was arrayed in a blue
flannel frock which had blue flannel sus-
penders crossed over a white waist,
George W. Curtis had always doemed
these costnmes very elegant. But he
was In no sense a masher, and atter al-
lowing Ms eyes the benefit of the pretty
girl for a moment be turned them in
quest of the oar and thougnt no more
about her. The pretty girl did not think
of George W. Crutis at all. It is all but
certain that had it not been for a peculi-
arly dull oonduotor this romance would
have ended here. Most horse oonduotors
are bright, sprightly men, and of a pretty
wit of their own. But this member of
the guild was dull ; or, perhaps, he was
preoccupied with troubles of his own.
This was what the dull conductor did,
and drove those two doves back into the
flet which the fowler fate was spreading
for them.
"Tickets?" he queried as George W.
Curtis tendered two bits.
"Tickets," remarked George W. Curtis.
The dull oonduotor tore off two tickets
for George W. Cutris andfor the pretty
girl, being misled therein by the fact
that they bad come aboard together.
Then the dull conductor repaired to the
bank platform, turned his back on George
W. Curtis and the pretty girl, and softly
whistled: "Never Take the Horseshoe
From the Door."
George G. Curtis was in a dilemma.
The pretty girl did not know that he had
inadvertently paid her fare, and she sat
opposite with her nicker in her waiting
little hand. Should George W. Curtis
break the truth to her? He decided that
he must. Sho would find it out before
she left the oar and get things all tangled
up to his discredit trying to understand.
"I beg your pardon," said George W.
Curtis, bending toward the pretty girl
and lifting bis bat, "but the fact is,
Miss, that fool of a oonductor has done
me the honor to suppose you are with
me, and bas collected your tare from me
on that theory." Tho pretty, girl seemed
much abashed, blushed deeply, and final-
ly getting it straight In her young mind
tendered George W. Curtis her nickel.
"Not at all," said George W. Curtis,
waving it away. "I wanted to tell you,
because I didn't care to have you think
1 was attempting any cigarette play to
make your acquaintance."
Then they at still for four blocks,
George W. Cutris looking excessively
virtuous. At last the pretty girl tender-
ed- shim—the =nickel' -weak 1`hI8 time
George W. Curtis came over and sat by
her. the better to explain how much he
didn't want the nickel_
She said her name was Bessie. George
W. Curtis had always held that Bessie
was a lovely name; ho would bet five to
one that it was the loveliest of all names.
aeseto lived in Richmond, and was visit-
ing her aunt on Rhode Island avenue.
Bessie was going nowhere in particular;
merely riding around viewing the city.
Unless Bessie objected, George W. Curtis
would•rido about with her, and give her
his advise and counsel as to how to view
the city with succuss. Bessie was a bit
worried, but finally did not object.
George W. Curtis saw Bessie safely into
the hands of the Rhode Island avenue
aunt at nine o'clock. The Rhode Island
avenue aunt behold nothing to shy at In
George W. Curtis. He called the next
night. Tuesday evening he took Bessie
and the Rhode Island avenue aunt to
hear the Marine band in the White House
{Founds. Wednesday Bessie went horne.
There George W. Curtis wrote. His let-
ters grew warmer and warmer, until the
postai people were made uneasy as they
handled them.
Thts story began two years ago. One
day loot week George W. Curtis and Bes-
sie were married. And on such hinges
dons one's future swing.

HEART -BEATS.
The Reason Why the nears Fitters Pal-
pitates, and is Oppressed, and illow to
Relieve It.
The heart has a hard old time of it and
within itself does not excite much dis-
ease, but it is very often called upon to dis-
play the troubling symptoms of palpita-
tjon, fluttering, labored breathing, op-
pression, etc., on account of diseased
Kidneys offering increased resistance to
the passage of the blood through their
defective secretive structures, causing a
morbid change in the blood unsuited to
nourish the tissues arid noxious to them.
The minute arteries resist the passage of
this foul blood, resulting in the muscular
walls of the arteries and the ventricle of
the heart becoming partially paralyzed,
and from this cause results much of the
so-called heart disease, which is owing to
wasting Kidneys not being able to per-
form their functions, In order to relieve
heart trouble remove the cause in the
Kidneys withChase's Kidney -Liver Pills.
They relieve the blood of poisonous de-
posits, it goes on its way a stream of
health, relieving the heart and imparting
strength to every tissue of the body.
When your heart is in trouble Chase's
Pills quickly remove the causing condi-
tion, no matter whether it exists on ac-
count of disorder of the kidneys, liver,
stomach, or of nervous affection. Sold
