For a century his claim ,to this honor
has stood secure and uuimpeaolled, But
quite recently an English Royal Geogra-
pher unearthed an old map in the Am-
brosian Library at Milan, drawn by one
Andrea Blanco, of Venice, in the year
1448. Blanco Is known as probably the
most famous cartographer of his time,
and the map is pronounced the clearest
and most aoaurately drawn of that cen-
tury, so far as the European and African
coasts aro concerned. Carefully and dis-
tinctly presented on its outer edge is a
bit of South American coast line, indicat-
ing that some navigator must have Dross
ed the Atlantic forty-flve years before
Columbus first sailed from Palos.
In England the discovery of this map
bas created excitement among scientific
men. A paper setting forth arguments in
support of a claim of a pro -Columbian
discovery of the New World, read before
the Royal Geographical Society recently by
H. Yule Oldam, M. A., an eminent
geographer, has been assailed by some
and complimented by others. but is
everywhere arousing interest. It asserts
that in 1446 some Portuguese ship, sail-
ing for the recently discovered rich
regions of Senegambia, must have been
driven out of its course,to the coast of
Brazil. a distance from Senegambia of
little more than 1,600 miles, the narrowest
portion of the Atlantic Ocean. ]'here is
no other way, according to Mr. Oldham,
to a000unt for the record of the new land
on the map. The land is indicated only
by a tiny bit of blank, but an explana-
tory note wlrtten, it is declared by Bianco
reads: "Ixola otintieha xe lenge, a
ponente 1,600 mla," meaning, "Authen-
tic island, distant 1,500 miles to the
West."
The most essential andaremarkahle fen-
' ture'of Bianco's map is the complete oh-
literation of the Mediterranean. The
reason this groat sea is not indicated is
that the map was intended simply as a
navigators' chart. It shows with accur-
acy the entire coast lino of Europe and
Africa from a northern point of Scotland
to Cape Verde. Another navigator's
chart by Blanco was drawn in 1436. It
presents the same accuracy with regard
to the European coast line, but lacks
definite information in regard to Africa.
The map of 1448 is the earliest in exist-
ence giving definite information in regard
to Africa. On it are the results of all
Portuguese discoveries in the region of
Gambia. The rediscovered Azores are
shown for the first time in their proper
place, and the fabled island of Antllla,
marked on previous maps, is left out,
as other Portuguese had, proved that it
did not exist. The Canary Islands are
also shown, and Cape Boyado, now nam
ed Bojador, Cape Blanco and Cap
Verde.
Besides this, are roughly indtoated in
th position that the Cape Verde Islands
actually occupy,- -two "' conventidtfallT
drawn islands with the vague title of
"Dos ermanes" (two brothers). At this
period the Cape Vordo Islands had not
been disoovered, and it was only rumored
that there were two islands to the west-
ward in about the locality shown. Prob-
ably these two islands had been seen from
the masthead of some Portuguese ship,
and it is an interesting commentary on
the accuracy of Blanco's 1448 map that
before Cadarnosto was driven on the Cape
Verde Islands in 1456 two were conspicu-
ous at some distance, and on landing
the others were seen from a mountain
The results are infinitely more satisfactory.

BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH
THEKNOWN ESCAPE OF A LL
NEWBURGH MAN.
BY THE LOBS OF A FINGER MR CHAS. MOORE
OF THAT VILLAGE NEARS DEATH'S DOOR, BUT
IS RESCUED AFTER DocTonsI HAVE FAILED.
From the Napanee Beaver,
In the pleasantlittle village of Newburgh,
on the Bay of Quinte Railway, seven miles
from Napanee, lives Mr C. H. Moore and
family. They are favorably known
throughout the entire section, having been
residents of Newburgh for years. Recently
Mr Moore had undergone a terrible sick-
ness, and hie restoration to health was the
talk of the village, and many even in Nap-
anee and vicinity heard of it, and the re-
sult was that The Beaver reporter was de-
tailed to make an investigation into the
matter. Mr Moore is a carriage maker
and while working in Finkle's factory last
winter met with an accident that caused
him the loss of the forefinger of hie right
hand. It was following this accident that
his sickness began. He lost flesh, was pale,
suffered from dizziness to the extent that
sometimes he could scarcely avoid falling.
He consulted physicians and tried numer-
ous medicines, but without any benefit.
He was constantly growing worse, and his
physician seemed puzzled, and none of his
friends thought he would recover. One
day a neighbor urged Mrs Moore to per-
suade her husband to give Dr William's
Pink Pills a trial, and after much pursue -
Bien he consented. After a few days he
began to feel better, and it no longer need•
ed persuasion to induce him to continue
the treatment. A marvellous change soon
came over him. Each day he seemed to
gather new strength and new life, and af-
ter eight boxes had been taken he found
himself again a well man. Mr Moore is
now about 65 years of age, he has been
healthy and has worked hard all his life
until the;,sickness alluded to, and now,
thankssto Dr William's Pink Pills, he is
once ream able to work in his old aecns-
tom`'way, and does not hesitate to g've
the credit to the medicine that restored
him to health, at a cost no greater ,than a
couple of visits to the doctor.
Time and again it has been proven that
r Vt'i]Ifam'5 Pink Pills 'cure-when-physi-
oian4end other medicines fail. No other
medippne has such a wonderful record and
no d,her medicine gives such undoubted
prooLi of the genuineness of every Dare
published and this accounts for the fact
that go where you will you hear nothing
but praise for Dr William's Pink Pills.
This reputation also acoonnts for the fact
the; nnscrupnlous dealers here and there
try to impose a Intik pill upon their cus-
tomers with the claim that it ie jest as
good, while a host of imitators are putting
up pills in packages somewhat similiar in
style in the hope that they wi" reap the
reward earned by the merit of the genuine
Pink Pills. No matter what any dealer
says no pill is genuine unless it bears the
full trade mark, "Dr William's Pink Phis
for Pale People,' on the wrapper aror-rd
every box. Always refuse substitutes
which are worthless and may be dangerous.

What gives Bianco's map weight
among the geographers of England is
that scientific rules have shown that it
is absolutely correct. It would seem
strange if, being accurate in all other re-
spects, it should err in the "authentic is-
land distant 1,500 miles to the west."
Owing to a lack of room in the parch-
ment on which the map was drawn, only
a corner of the new land is shown on the
lower edge. Taking the scale of the map,
this land is actually much closer to Cape
Verde than Brazil really is. It was prob-
ably for the object of preventing any mis-
conception that Blanco added under the
words, "ixola otincha" (authentic is-
land), the qualifying statement "xe longs
a potente 1,600 mitt" (distant 1,600 miles
to the west).
Tho arguments of tho opponents of this
theory are many and varied. Ono of
them is that this land shown on the map
as the "authentic island," represented
the Cape Verde Isles, as seen by a hasty
glance of an early explorer. There aro,
however, two objections to this. The
Cape Verde Islands aro provided fo:
under the name "Dos Ermanos," and
Cape Verde islands are not to the so
or the southwest of Cape Verde,
directly to the west, The "authent''
land" is depicted as to the southwest,
which is the position of Brazil from Cape
Verde.
Ram and carefully guarded wore tho re-
cords of that period. and it is not strange
that an account of this pro -Columbian
voyage. if indeed such a one was actually
made, has never passed into actual his-
tory. Books in the old libraries of the
Continent give somo insight Into it,
nevertheless, and some testimony that is
corroborative. Antonio Galvao, in the
middle of the sixteenth century, compiled
"The Discoveries of tho World," in which
is an account of a voyage which seems to
agree precisely with tho information on
Bianco's map.
"In this yoare also, 1447," says Galvao,
"it happened that there came a Portugal
ship through the streight of Gibraltar,
and being taken with a great tempest,
was forced to runno westwards more than
willingly tho men would, and at last they
came to an island. Tho boateswaino of
the ship brought home a little of the sand
and sold it unto a goldsmith of Lisbon, out
of the which he had a good quantitie of
gold."
Galvao goes on to relate that the island
bad seven, cities, and that rho people
spoke the Portuguese -tongue, demanding
1f the Moors did yet trouble Spain, and
saying they had fled from that country
upon the death of the King Don Rodori-
go. As that would havo made each of
the inhabitants of the island 700 years
old it is quite evidently a sailor's yarn, a
variation of tho old Portuguese tradition
of an unknown land in the wost, where
Oven cities worn founded in the eighth
century by ari archbishop and six bishops
Who -fled from Europe before the invad-
ing Moors. Another tradition of the
period is also corroborative. It is pre.
