The trial at Mt. Clemens, Mich., of
Alfred Willett, charged with the mur-
der of Jessie Van Zandt, 21 years old
has resulted in the jury finding him
guilty of murder in the first de-
gree. The murdered girl was born in
St. Marys in 1873, where her parents
resided for a number of years. Mr.
Van Zandt who now lives at Learn-
ingtoni•Ont , carried on the business of
it pump maker in the shop now occupied
by Tracey Bros., contractors, Welling-
ton st., south. Miss Van Zandt had
been in Mt. Clemens but five days
when she was drowned. She went out
rowing with young Willett on the
evening of July 2nd last. Willet be-
haved improperly; Miss Van Zandt
resisted his advances and asked to he
taken ashore. When with in 20 rods of
the boathouse he capsized the boat and
the girl was drOwned. The scoundrel
will no doubt be sent to penitentiary
for life.
