ADDRESS OF SYMPATHY.—ReCently a committee was appointed to draft and present to Bro. Henry Perdue a letter of sympathy. Last week the duty was performed and Bro. Perdue replied in suitable terms to the following :— Jan. 13th, 1804. To Mr. Henry Perdue and family. DEAR BROTHER AND FRIENDS,—The members of Loyal Orange Lodge No. 306 desire to, extend to .you their heartfelt sympathy - in the great loss you have sustained in the death of your beloved wife. We know the kind and cheerful countenance of your now silent partner and helpmate will not he seen on this side the grave. But 'what a grand thought to know that, there is rill ever- lasting home beyond the grave. While the blow is irreparable and the blank sad, we ask you to weep not but rather emulate the many Godly virtues of the departed. We assure you, dear Brother, that you have our keen ,Sym- pathy in your sore and trying affic- tion Signed on behalf of L. 0. L. 308: Geo. A. Cooper • Albert Anderson John It. Sheppard Unlike most proprietary medicines, the formuhe • of -Dr. J. C. Ayer's Sarsa- parilla and other preparations are cheerfully sent to any physician who applies for thele. Hence the special favor accorded these well-known standard remedies by the 'World's Fair commissioners. Brussels. Will. A. Ross, of Fergus, spent Sun- day with friends in town. Charlie and Miss Clinrie, of Listowel, were visiting their sister, Mrs. R. Ross, last Sunday. Key. John Ross, B. A.,'preached in Toronto on Sunday. His pulpit was filled by Mr. Jas. S. Kens; a student of Knox 'College. The attendance of Melville church S. S. has so increased that it has been found necessary to enlarge the school room by removing the partition which divided the basement into two rooms. The new ten ton market scales were set in position last week and work very satisfactory. There are 110 weights used on these scales but three bearers are used instead. Robt. Arm- strong did the work. John F. McCrea, of Toronto, is home 1111 aL visit. Mr. Moore and wife, of Trowbridge, were visiting their sons on Saturday of last week. Mrs. John Soli had the misfortune to have one of her arms broken the other day by falling on the door step. Miss Frank Pelton spent several days with friends in Winghaur last week. Several sleigh loads of the young people of the Methodist church and Epworth League paid a visit to the Epworth League in Ethel on Monday evening of this week. Miss M. Hoare has been visiting in Clinton for the last week. Harry McCrea hag taker) the position of "Devil" on the "Post" staff. A parlor social will be held at the residence of H. Dennis on Thursday evening of this week, under the auspices of the ladies of St. John's church. Mr. and the Misses Habk irk, of Blyth, were the guests of Miss Maggie Smith on Sunday. We ei n4et ely h ope ttlwi the W.County Orange Lodge to have an Orange demonstration in Seaforth this year, Miss Annie McTaggart, who lives near here, is at present very ill. She had la grippe some time ago and in consequence is in poor health. We hope to soon see Miss Annie around again, as she is a general favorite here. Mr. W. Shillinglaw and Mrs. La vina Vanhorzl were married on Tuesday, 16th, by the Rev. Mr. Martin, of Exeter. In tying the matrimonial knot Mr. Martin though taking much time does his work well. Mr. A. L. Bell and Mr. Lt. Sand are piling up cordwood and logs in great style. Messrs. Paul Boa and Dan McMillan killed last week the largest fox that has over been'killed around here. Paul says that after raising a fox his hound never takes over 30 minutes to bring him to bay. Dan likes the sport immensely. • - Mr. John Sinclair, of this place denies current reports that he is a tory. He says, however, that while in Toronto recently he came very near becoming a Tory. That's right, John ; come out on the right side and he happy. John reads the Mail and THENEWS-RECORD. Bro. L. has gone wild over the state- ment by some one saying that he could go round the world in less time than three minutes. We believe it is pos- sible'and if 'Bro. L. keeps cool for a couple of weeks we will tell him how it is done. The Nile correspondent wishes to know if ,he went out among the girls would it better his case if he pretended he was 'a preacher. Well, it depends where he goes. If he comes to Chiselhurst it would not do at all. Just tell them you are from the Nile and you are all right. Mr. Peter Moore, Kippen Road, Tuckersmith, sold his farm of 50 acres to Iter. Canning for the sum of $2,950. This is the farm that the farmer's hotel is built on. It is considered a pretty good price. Mr. C. Robb and daughter have re- moved from our village and gone to reside on their farm on the 10th con. Bro. George Parker, who had his arm hurt with a crosscut saw, has re- covered the use of that member. We are happy to see Geo. all right again as he is a jolly good fellow. Bro. L's. neck is all right again and we cannot see signs of stiff neckedness, at least in a physical sense. The Dean and The Canon. To the Editor of'Ihe News -Record. Sir,—It will be, I am sure, with deep regret that many will read the account in the columns of the Mail of the 19th inst., of how the Dean of Montreal was prominent i$ endeavor- ing to stop the distribution of Canon Farrar's sermon on "Ritualism" during the sitting of the Synod. When we find men of the type of the Archbishop of Canterbury using such language as he does, speaking of Ritualism, calling it "fingering with the trinkets of Rome ;" Canon Farrar proclaiming with no uncertain sound his opiniok that it is time to call a halt, that peopl8 have permitted the deadly poison to circulate to that extent that the very life is in danger; eminent Roman Catholics, openly in print, con- gratulating each other upon the power- ful aid the Ritutalistsive their,, enab- ling them to accomplish that which would have been impossible without their aid, in accustoming the eye and the ear of the English peo- ple to the vestments and cere- monies of the Rornish Church'; and, to our sorrow be it said, when we see wren like the Dean of Montreal, who has at times ,riven Protestants a hope that he with his great and varied abilities, was a tower of strength to therh, acting as has been already referr- ed to, is it not time for us laymen in Canada to let our voices be heard in one united, strong, solemn, protest against this deadly evil of Ritualism, which is draining the very life -blood from our boasted Protestant Church of England in Canada ? I read that the introduction of mat- ters of a controversial character was deprecated. Did St. Paul deprecate the introduction of controversy? Did the Founder, the Christ Himself, hesi- tate to denounce evil? What would the testimony of the prophets of old have been worth had they avoided controversy? Imagine, if one can Elijah at Mount Carmel, speaking with the silvered, flattering tongue to the prophets of Baal I Either this return- ing to the beggarly elements of form and ceremony is right or it is wrong. Either this growth of priestly interfer- ence between the Creator and His creature is right or wrong. Either there is something in the faith for which such men as Ridley, Latimer, and Cranrner gave up their lives, "of whom the world was not worthy," or the 'Church of Rome is right; and the quicker those who think thus embrace her creed in its entirety, the better for thein. Let these no longer defile the Church of England, from which they are apostate. But d submit the time for deprecat- ing controversy is past. We are re- minded to be charitable to all, till we forget that charity "rejoiceth not in iniquity." The time has come for each and every one to he fearless and bold for the truth, The apathy, the dead- ness of the laity are much to blame, in times past, for the insidious creeping in of the evil of priestcraft into our be- loved Church. Let us awake from our slumber and guard our precious heri- tage of truth, to hand down 'unimpair- ed to those that shall corse after. Yours, etc., JOHN RANSFORD. Clinton, January 20. DO NOT Miss THIS CHANCE,—Olir readers will see from advertisement in another column that Prof. Doren - wend, the well known manufacturer of Hair Goods, is about to revisit us with his many styles of covering for both Ladies and Gentlemen.
