H.'E CLI TON NiW ;JRA i$iii .ttlebavd Ca ;twr'igllt to the P4troiu , . a Ltbetal Patron in Lennox A tetter from Sir Richard Cartwright. to has been maublio, In it hedieouee Comity de t tin Bangor of the Libe, We en i Patrons, who aim at the salve reforrite in Dominion politics, enabling the common enemy to win, by opposing one another where they should Unite. Sir Richard expref4see him- self as heartily in sympathy with the Patrons. "Nevertheless," he says "I feel that there is great danger of their making ia very grave mistake at this juncture. The foes of liberty and good government are a very powerful body in Canada to -day. They‘are strongly entrenched and very highlorganized indeed. Protection has imany roots. It has a full treasury, and a great hold on a large part of the press of this country. It holde the reins of Govern - went, and it has a very large proportion of the active wealth of the Dominion on its side. You may be sure it will die hard here as well es in the United States. Now, this being so, for the opponents of such a foe to quarrel with each other on the very eve of a pitched battle against the common enemy, is as the French statesman said, even worse than a prime—it would be an irreparable and unforgivable blunder," Sir Richard then compares the platforms of the two parties and shows that they are identical desire, is the cardinal plank of the Libe party and has been so ever since 1878, Tariff Reform, whioh the Patron 8 ral as Parliamentary records abundantly testify. The demand of the Patrons for the aboli- tion of the Senate is one with which the Liberals agree; but Sir Richard points out that there is no possibility of immediate action, because the Senate can only be abolished by an Imperial Act. "What," continues Sir Richard, "are the other planks of the Patron platforn affecting Dominion politics? They are these: (1) Economy of administration, (2) Purity and independence of Parliament. (3) Tariff for revenue only. (4) Reciprocal trade. (5) Protection of labor from mono- polies. (8) No railway bonuses. (7)Votere' lists by local officials. (8) No gerrymander- ing. (9) Lands for settlers. Now, there is simply no single one of all these objects whioh the Liberal party have not been fighting for, moving resolutions for and doing their very best to obtain any time during the last twenty years. Look espe. dally at the several motions on the budget. Look at their platform and at the very last resolution moved by myself in Parliament, and you will see that as regards Dominion politics there is absolutely no ground for difference between the Patrons and the Liberal Party. • The Liberal party for fifteen years and more have been fighting at heavy odds for the very objects the Patrons profess to desire, The Liberals lost office rather than forsake their prin- ciples. The Liberal party might have long since regained office if they would have betrayed them, and yet we find certain Patrons continually declaring that both parties are alike, and advising their as- sociates to make no distinction between a Liberal and a Protectionist candidate." Sir Richard concludes his letter as fol- lows: "The one thing which can defeat the Patrons—the one thing which can prevent their attaining the objects they wish to obtain—and the one thing which the advocates of protection desire more than aught else, is for the Patrons of Industry to quarrel with the Liberal party. Now whatever some few may have said or even done up to this time, . I do not believe that the Patrons as a body, on calm consider- ation, will be so ill-advised as to commit any such suicidal act; and I would most certainly -urge -you and' -ail "r iberaTh eho have seen fit or who may desire to join the the ranks of the organization to nee your best endeavors, alike in the interests of the Patrons themselves and all true friends of honest Government in Canada, to prevent such a disaster. As I have said, there is a hard fight before us in any event, and you may rely on it that both Liberals and Pat- rons have their work cut out for them in advance if they expect to vanquish a tyranny which in the last fifteen years has cost Canada a thousand millions of trea- sure and over a million and a half of peo- ple, besides debasing and degrading the whole tone of public morality and of pub - tie life to an extent which no other system even did or perhaps could, and which, if not sternly checked while there is yet time, will ultimately and inevitably end in reduc- ing the great mase of the population to a position very little better than that of serfs bound to pay tribute to a few score or a few hundred millionaires." Many people, when a little constipated, makes the mistake of using saline or other draetic purgatives. All that is needed is a mild dose of Ayer's Pills to restore the regular movement of the bowels, and na- ture will do the rest. They keep ' the sys- tem in perfect order. LOGICAL. "Are you going to he an old maid now, Ethel?" asked that young lady's 10 -year-old sister, Why, certainly not, you silly child,'1 she replied. "I shall marry MrSpoon- er, of course," "But you can't now." "Why not?" "Isn't he a bachelor?" "Yes." "And he joined the church this morning." "I know it." "And he was confirmed," "I know that also." "Well, doesn't that make him a con- firmed bachelor?" Mrs. P. D. HALL, 217 Genessee St.,. Lockport, N. Y., says "Over thirty years ago, I remember hearing my father describe the wonder- ful curative effects of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. During a recent attack of La Grippe, which assumed the form of a catarrh, soreness of the lungs, accom- panied by an aggravating cough, I used various remedies and prescriptions. While some of these medicines partially alleviated the coughing during the day, none of them afforded me any relief from that spasmodic action of the lungs which would seize me the moment I attempted to lie down at night. After ten or twelve such nights, I was Nearly in Despair, and had about decided to sit up all night in Ivy easy chair, and procure what sleep I could in that way. It then oc- curred to me that I had a bottle of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. I took a spoonful of this preparation in a little water, and was able to lie down without coughing. In a few moments, I fell asleep, and awoke in the morning greatly refreshed and feeling much better. I took a teaspoonful of the Pec- toral every night for a week, then grad- ually decreased the dose, and in two weeks my cough was cured." Ayer's Cherry Pectoral Prepared by Dr. J. C.
