AN OPEN LETTER
From a Prominent Physician.
IIMPORTANT TO FARMERS.
His Honor Judge Doyle has given a
j edgrnent in the case of Bruwn vs. Mur-
ray, which is of much importance to
farmers and others dealing in stock.
The plaintiff, Samuel Brown, resides in
Ashfield, where John W,' Murray, the
defendant, also resides; both are farm-
.eraand cattle dealere. ..Dni.the.7th Sept.,
1893, Brown Schad to Murray eight head
ofcattle and received on acGp,>,int.there-
of the sum of $5; and the following
week Murray picked out his cattle. from
.o.large number and branded them.
Murray was to take his cattle in about
three weeks, The cattle not 'having
been taken within the time agreed on,
Brown, without giving Murray to un-
derstand that he intended to hold him
to the bargain, sold at a loss of $
for this sum he sued in the Dungannon
'
court, and after consideration is Hon-
or delivered the following judgment: -
"The evidence shows the cattle in
question had become the property of
the defendant in the payment of ear-
nest and the placing of defendant's
brand on them. That being so the onus
is on plaintiff to justify his re -sale of
them and his right to recover from de-
fendant the loss on such re -sale. The
plaintiff should, before re -sale, have no-
tified defendant to pay the balance of
-price and take -there -away, -and-: •
him clearly to understand that un ess
he did so he (plff) would re -sell and look
to defendant for the loss, if any. This
was not done. I, therefore, dismiss
the plaintiff's claim and direct judg-
ment for defendant."
Areat many y people have the idea
that if stock is not taken away at the
date agreed upon, that they can do
what they like with it. From the alcove
judgment they will see that the law is
entirely different, and that before they
attempt to sell property which belongs
to the purchaser, they must take the
proper steps to get rid of his title.
A REMAEIABLE COBE OF CONSUMPTION IN ITS
LAST $TAOEd—Is THIS ONCE DUBAI). DIS..
EASE CONQUYRED?—IMPORTANT FACTS TO ALL
BUFFERING FROM DISEASED OH 'REAM I t1INea,
ELMWOOD, Ont., Aug. 21st; 1894.
DEAR SIRu:-I wish to called your atten=
tion to a remarkable oare of consumption.
In March, 1893, I was called;in my pro-
fessional capacity to see Miss .Christina
Koester, of North Brant, who yraa then suf-
fering from an shack 'of inflammation " of
the left lung. The attack was a severe
one, the use of the lung being entirely gone
from •the effect of . the disease. I treated
her for two weeks, when recovery seemed
assured. I afterwards heard from her at
intervals that the progress •of recovering
was satisfactory. The case ther passed
from my notice until June, when I was
again called to see her, her friends thinking
she had gone into consumption. On visit-
ing her I found their suspicions too well
founded. From robust health she had
wasted to a mere skeleton, scarcely able to
-walk-across-the-room Rha was suffering
from an intense cough, and expectoration
of putrid matter, in feet about a pint each
night. There was a burning hectic fever
with chills daily.. A careful examination
of the previously diseased lung showed that
its function was entirely gone, and that in
all probability it was entirely destroyed.
Still haying hopes that the trouble was due
to a collection of water around the lung I
asked for a consultation, and the following
day with a prominent physician of a neigh-
boring town attain made a oareful examine.
tion. Every symptom and physical sign
indicated the onset of rapid consumption
and thebreaking down of the lungs. Death
certainly seemed but a short time distant.
A regretfnl experience had taught me the
uselessness of the ordinary remedies used
for this dread and fatal disease, and no hope
was .to be looked for in this direction. I
had frequently read the testimonials in
favor of Dr. Williams' Pink Fills in wast-
ing diseases. but not knowing their com-
position hesitated:to nse$them. Finally,
however, I decided to give them a trial, and
I am free to say that I only used them at a
stage when I knew of absolutely nothing
else that could save the patient's life. The
test was a most severe one and I must also
admit an unfair one, as the patient was so
far gone as to make all hope of recovery
eeem impossible. A very short time, how-
ever, convinced me of the valve of Pink
Pills. Although only ming an ordinary
soothing cough mixture along with the pills,
within a week the symptoms had abated so
much that it was no longer necessary for
me to make daily calla. Recovery was eo
rapid that within a month Miss Koester
was able to drive to my office, a distance of
about six miles, and was feeling reasonably
well, except for weakness. The expectora-
tion had ceased, the cough was gone and
the breathing in the diseased long was being
restored. The use of the Pink Pille was
continued until the end of October, when
she ceased to take tine medicine, being in
perfect health. I still watched her case
with deep interest, but almost a year has
now pissed and not a trace of her illness re-
inailis. In factshe is as well as ever she
was and no one vvo'tiTd` suspiiiit that iih'o'"'had`
ever been ailing, to say nothing of having
been in the elutohes of such a deadly dis-
easeasconanmption. Her recovery through
the use of Pink Pills after having reached a
stage when other remedies were of no avail
is so remarkable that I feel myself justified
in giving the facts to the public, and I re-
gret that the composition of the pills is not
known to the medical profession at large in
order that their merit might be tested in
many more disease and their nsefullness be
thus extended. I intend giving them an ex-
tended trial in the case of consumption, be-
lieving from their action in this case, (so
well marked) that they will prove a curative
in all cases where a cure is at all possible-
I mean before the lunge are entirely de-
stroyed. Yours truly,
J. EVANS, M. D.

ville, Ont.

AN UNEXPECTED REPLY TO
MOODY.
When Mr Moody was preaching in
Washington last spring .he asserted
one day that if Jesus Christ should re-
turn to this world in person and ap-
pear in that city, He would not be
welcome, and that the people would
not consent to be governed by Him.
He asked the audience if they would
receive Him, and to emphasize his as-
sertion he appealed to an aged colored
man sitting near the pulpit: "Would
you vote for him?" The reply came
promptly: "'Twouldn't do no good.
They wouldn't count my vote.' Mr
Moody at once changed the subject.

SINKING VESSELS TO SAVE
THEM.
Whenever a vessel with its cargo on
fire is in the vicinity of land and im-
mediate action is necessary in order to
save the ship, she is steered into shal-
low water, and in the case of a wooden
vessel, holes are chopped in her side
(scuttled, it is called)even with the
water, so that she wil fill and sink;
but if she is an iron vessel, what are
known as "sea -cocks" ate opened, and
the water allowed to flow through
them. The sea -cocks are controlled
from the deck, and may be opened and
shut by a siinple hand -lever. After
the fire has beer, extinguished the holes
are closed, the vessel pumped out and
floated.-Harper's Young People.

A NOVEL WAY OF SAVING A
VESSEL ON FIRE.
One of the most brilliant pieces of
ocean -wrecking seamanship on record,
whereby the vessel, far out in the
Atlantic with her cargo on fire, was
saved and brought safely to port, was
performed on board the American ship
John Jay, commanded by Captain
Samuel Jackson.
When two weeks out the cargo was
discovered to be on fire. The Captain
determined upon his course of action.
He had the carpenter lowered over the
rail, and instructed himito bore several
holes low down by the water -line. The
vessel was then put on the other tack
so that she would be heeled over on
the sidewhere the holes had been
made. "
The water shot through these open-
ings, and after the ship had been al-
lowed to sink almost to the level of the
deck, she was put around on the other
tack again, so that the holes came
within two or three feet of the top of
the water. Several of the sailors, with
lines made fast under their arms and
holding long wooden legs and ham-
mers, slid down along the side, steady-
ing themselves by ropes that had been
passed under thlfb vessel and hauled
taut, so that they came alongside of
the holes. The tapering pins were
thrust into the openings and knocked
tight, then t he vessel was put before
the wind to get her on an even keel.
