have passed since John Vrornan murd-
ered Jamed hickey, at Windsor, not
one of the relatives of the latter have
• been heard from and the authorities
are of the opinion that he had none in
Canada. hickey had over $300 on
his person when he was shot, and this,
lees his burial expenses, is held by
Chief Wills. Vrornan is in the best
of spirits and is getting stout on prison
fare. Since his incarceration ho has
not given the unthoritiea the slightest
trouble, and appeors to be confident
that he will get free. It is reported
that the defence are cognizant of the
whereabouts of Mrs. Hickey, and will
have her at rhe tiial.

J. W. Nagler, V. S , Delaware,

cipally saved. The flamer; extending
easterly to the dwelling house of Aaron
Vail, that was quickly consumed, as
was also Mr. James Harris' residence,
to the west. The contents were nearly
all saved. Next, Robert Alleu'sbutch-
er shop, west, would have been burned
but for the valiant work of the men or-
ganized into a pail brigade. The fire
started from the upsetting of a lamp or
ah explosion in Nagle's office. Loop,

school excursion on Wedneada , a
young man called upon A. Minto and
procured a marriage license, in which
the names of the contracting parties
were 'as W. Underhill and Bessie
Congdou,both of Windsor. The young
couple took the•hoat, and shortly atter•
wards the Rev. Mr. Vining, pastor of
the Bruce Avenue Baptist church, who
was on the boat, was taken_ by the
young man into a secluded corner and
nervously asked if he would perform
the ceremony. The boat by this time
was in Lake St. Clair, and as the min-
ister did not know whether or not
they were in Canadian waters, he per-
suaded the young titan to wait until
Walpole Island was roaeh6d. Shortly
after the boat had arrived the young
divine might have been seen wending
his way into the woods, while a young
lady and a young gentleman were hur-
riedly following. After travelling
nearly half a mile the minister called a
halt and under the spreading. branches
of a stately elm he pronounced the
couple man and wife. rho news soon
got out ant there was mach speculation
on the boat as to who were the happy
pair. as they were unknown to all ex-
cept Mr. Vining.

About 9:15 o'clock Sunday morning
a terrible accident occurred at Sarnia
resulting in the death of two boys
named Roland -and Norman Mitchell,
aged 15 and 1 L years respectively, eons
of Mr. Alex, Mitchell, milk dealer and
gardner, who resides near Lakeview
cemetery. The lade were driving the
milk delivery waggon, and were run
into by an engine where the Grand
Trunk Railway' crosses Exmouth street
at the north end of the town. The top
of the eldest boy's head was cut off
allowing the brains to protrude, and a
leg and arm cut off end almost every
bone in his body broken. The young-
er led was bruised about the head and
body and had both ' legs cut off. The
waggon was smashed to pieces, while
the horse got offwithout a scratch. a

—While driving from Oxford Mills
to Ketnptville Thursday, Richard Cot•
tem .and wife, an aged couple of the
township of Augusta, were struck by
the express going eaat at Harris' cross-
ing, and both instantly killed. No
ouo—unless on the train—appeared to
have witnessed the accident, so that tho
particulars of the case cannot be kuown.
They were going to Kemptville to
visit friends. It is said that the whistle
of the engine was heard, but strange to
say the train was not even brought to a
halt to ascertain the result.

—The steeple of the Lutheran
church, Soebach'a hill, Huron road,
was struck by lightning on Saturday
evening last, and set on fire. The
organ was oleo considerably damaged
by the electric fluid. Every effort
was made to stay the progress of the
fire, but owing to the great height it
was found impossible to extinguish the
flames. It burned very slowly, how-
ever, and Stratford sent up a fire
engine with their fire brigade, which
very soon extinguished the fire. The
loss is considerable, but fully covered
by insurance in the Usborno 'Mutual
Co.

A SLIMY TALE.
A fIUNTER'S EXPERIENCE WITH A NEST
OF IIATTLESNAKES.
An awful battle with rattlesnakes
and copperheads were fount by three
men near Brush Valley, Mt. Carmel,
Pa , last week. While hunting on the
mountain near Brush Valley, Schindel
Wiest, Aaron Mummah and John
Orwig went through an experience cal-
culated to raise their hair and sot all
their nerves twitching. Wiest fell
down through a holo in the ground
that was screened by a clump of bushes,
upon a very bignest of reptiles.
Before the startled snakes had re-
covered from their surprise, Wiest drew
quickly away from them, and fired a
shot into their midst. He then started
to bent them with the stock of bis gun,
He knew that he was in great danger,
and yelled for help, \Voigt was al
most exhausted when MMMummah and
Orwig came to the rescue, and fired so
many biota that the4snakes gave up the
battle. Thirty-two rattlesnakes and
three copperheads were killed,
