Mr. W. J. Carter, who had his barn

has settled with the Hosvick Mutual

Prof. Wiggins was last week at
Ottawa asked what he thought of Prof.
Colbere's assertion that the earth is
liable to bo tun dovtn by the comet.
He said: " You can judge as to the
danger when I say that Father Seichi,
a celebrated Italian astronomer, a few
years ago was looking through hie glass
at the same cornet (Biota's) when he
saw it buret in two', thus becoming
two electric comets. These have
gradually receded from each other,
and are now consideredtwo dis-
tinct comets and havel periodic
times entirely dissimilar. There is no
danger of their running upon each
other, and why should they run against
the earth 1 Moreover, some of the
asteroids, as for instance Melpomene
and Nysssa, are continually crossing
and recrossing the path of Mors
and never collide with that planet.
Comets, however, may do a great deal
of damage, for if one should ran be-
tween ue and our moon, as Lexell's
comet ran among the moons of Jupiter
in 1778, its powerful attraction would
so contract the earth as to cause the
water's of our oceans to overflow our
continent, as no doubt happened at
the Noachian deluge."
Tlie apple packers have now finished
their work for this year and have gone
to their respective homes. The prin-
cipal buyers in this section were Steep,
of Clinton, and Peterson, of Colborne.
Among those who had large yields
of apples this year were Thos. Miller,
who had 180 barrels, and John R. I3e11
who bad 160 barrels. ^ These were both
large yields considering the size of the
orchards.
While writing about apples we must
not forget to mention the good time
made in packing apples by Jas. Surtie,
Alex Bird, Wm. Wright, of 13r'ussels,
and Harry Fitzsimmons, of Clinton.
In 8 hours they packed 60 barrels,
making two moves, one of 3 miles and
the other mile.
