C. James, B. A., Deputy Minister of Agriculture, read an interesting paper on "Agriculture in the Public Schools." He said that it was gen• erally recognized that in late yeare there has arisen a neeeseity to take steps to counteract the tendency to the centralization of population iu the towns and cities. The question that hero presented itself was, would the teaching of agriculture in the public schools operate to any great extent against this tendoucy I In the schools of Germany, Austria, Sweden, France and other couutrioe agriculture was taught with success. lu tho last named country the sub- ject has been - made a coupulsory one. Perhaps the chief difficulty in the way of introducing agricul ture into the schools would be the fact that only a very small propor- tion of the teachers were qualified to teach the subject and Very few of thein would be found in sympathy with the step. Of course, every- thing depended upon the teachers. In France, where agriculture was a compulsory subject, public school teachers before they could secure a school were obliged to qualify for the the teaching of this branch. If trustees desire that the subject should be taught in their schools they.. would . have to insistetrongly upon its introduction. A great deal, we thought, might be accomplished by adapting the pres- ent curriculum to the study of the subject. He agreed with Huxley in the belief that natural sciences should be introdueed into schools by the means of a series of talks on the subject, and that the principles thus propounded shonld be practi- cally applied in so far as the teacher found opportunity. The question was referred to a committee of Geo. A. Fraser, Woodstock; G. W. Os trom, Trenton; Judge Bell, Chatham Rev. Dr. Jackson, Galt.; T. H. Race, Mitchell; William Houston (con- venor), Toronto; S. F. Lazier, Hamilton. - JUDGE JOHNSTON SUR- PRISED. _ pass without expres, siilg our pleasure and satisfaction at the honor which has been conferred upon you, by appointing you to the honorable and responsible position of Judge ot this vast District: Although your career as Junior Judg(l'of this District was but short it was suflioient 50 display your star• ling qualities as a man, to win the reapeot and admiration of 'these with whom you came in contact, and to show that you possessed ability and eru, lition that deservedly merit- ed the promotion you have received. \4'e Must ]learn;: thank you for the etlo.ts you have always and ever made to accomodate us and suit our convenience, and for the many kindnesses shown each and all of us by yon since your elevation to the Bench, and we trust the kind ;and friendly relations that have 'hereto- fore existed between Bench and Bar at Sault Ste, Marie will continue in the future. Judge Johnston was neatly taken by surprise by this unlooksd for act of kindness from the Bar, but he controlled his feelings -sufficiently to thank the Crown Attorney and Bar of Sault Ste. Marie for their generous presentation, expressed his gratification at the satisfaction with which his course of adminis- trating the duties of the Bench had been met, and hoped that in the future as in, the past the relations between the Bench and the Bar would always be such as to coin eland the respect and admiration of the profession and the laity. The best thing about the presen- tation is that the lawyers have only voiced the high eateem in which Judge Johnston is held by all classes through the District of Eastern Algona.
