COVILLE CONVALESCES.
' Since an unfottuuate acdi:letlt
to Mr. Covillo while out shooting,
he has been obliged to keep pretty
close to the house. Last Wodnoa•
day ho was out in the .yard fur the
first time. and on Friday Mrs.
Coville got him au easy -chair, which
proved'a great comfort to him. It
is one of those chairs that can be
moved by the occupant to form
almost ,any position by means of
ratchets.

n
Mr.• Coville was very much pleas
ed with this new contrivance nna
the first afternoon did nothing bu
sit in it and work 'it all ways
He said such a chair as that in th
world did more goo than a hun-
dred sermons.
He had it in his room -the fron
bedroom up stairs ; and there h
would sit and look out of the win-
dow„ he enjoyed himself as much
as a man can whose legs have bee
ventilated with shot. On Monday
afternoon he got in the chhir a
usual. Mrs. Coville was out i
the backyard hanging up clothes
and his son was across the read
drawing a stick along a paling. .
Sitting down, Mr. Coville grasp•
ed the sides of the chair with both
hands to settle it back, when the
whole thing gave way and he carne
violently to the floor. For an
instant •the unfortunate gentleman
was benntnbod by.•tho euddenuess
of the shock ; but the next he was
aroused 8,y an acute pain in each
arm, and he foundthat the little,
finger of each hand had caught in
the ratchets, and wata as firmly held
as if in a vice.
There he lay on his, back with the
end of a round sticking in his side,
and both hands perfectly powerless.
The least move of his body aggra-
vated Oahe pain, which was chasing
up his arms. He screamed for
help, 'but Mrs. Coville was its the
back yard, telling Mrs. Coney,
next door, t11,t t,,,;sho didn't know
what 'Coville 'vtaild. do _without
that &air, and se she didn't hear
him.
He pounded the floor with his
stocklinged fent; but the younger
Coville was still drawing emotion
from that paling nproes the way,
and .ail other sounds were rapidly
sinking into iueionificance. Mr.
Covi•lle's lege were not sufficiently
recovered from firs lute accidentto
permit of their being profitably
used .as mallets. How he did des.
pise that otfepri.ng 1 and how
forven•hiy he did wish the owner
of the fence would light on the
boy, and reduce hied to powder 1
Then he screamed again, and
howled.-, and ehorlted • "Maria!"
but theme was no response. What
if 11e should die there alone, in
that awful shape 1 The pain in his
arm assumed an awful magnitude.
Again he;.s ..'° t ti "Maria," but the
matinee across the way only 'grew
in volume ; the unconscious wife had
gone into Mrs. Coney's , and was
trying on that ladies redingote.
Then he howled and coughodand
howled again, and screamed at the
top of his voice the awfullost things
he would do to that boy, if heaven
would only spare him, and showed
him an axe. Then he opened his
mouth for one final shriek, when
the door opened and Ml's. Coville
appeared with a smile on her face
and Mrs. Coney's redingote on her
back. At one glance she saw that
something awful had happened to
Joseph ; and, with wonderful pres-
ence of mind, sho screamed for
help, and then fainted away, and
pitched headlong into the lower re.
gion of his waietecoat.
Fortunately, the blow deprived
him of his speech, else ho might
have said something that he would
ever have regretted ; and, before he
could regain his senses, Mrs. Coney
dashed in and removed the grief,
fitricken wife. But it required a
blacksmith to cut Coville loose.
Ho is again back in bed, with his
mutilated fingers resting on pillows;
and there lies all da, concocting
new forms of death for the inventor
of that chair, and hoping nothing
will happen to his son until he can
get well enough to administer it
himself.
ONE of the eights of the City of Ham-
ilton is the factory in whioh the celebra-
ted '1Myrtle Navy" tobaoco is made.
Some people suppose -that puttfng up
plugs of tobacco must be a very simple
matter, but a walk amidst the ponderous
and complicated machinery of the estab-
lishment would speedily undeceive them.
Hero are hydraulic presses, screw press-
es, iron frames, all of enormous atrongth,
besides a steam engine and many other
pieces of machinery.
POTATO CULTURE.
'Nearly every farmer cultivates
potatoes and the yield is nsuany
from 75 to 100 bushels per acre. It
should be from 200 to 300 hellhole.
Farmers make Ih nlibtake when they
ti:ink a warm sandy soil is the heat
for growing this root. Choose a.
cool, moist, though not a wet soil.
Newly broken ground (September
ground) turned with a deep furrow
is the best field for potato growing,
Allow me to deacrihe the way of
planting potatoes. Plough in Sep-
tember after the harvest, furrow
deep if sod or subsoil plough ground.
In the spring, mark the furrows
again with a small light plough and
cross mark with a narrow corn-
i]srker. Seatter fully' decomposed
manure over the hills where the
potatoes are to be planted. After
Oda fertilizing process is completed
cover the manure with about two
ii ehes of earth, using a hat row to
do so. Plant your Need potatoes
and cover the rows with a acrapt•r.
When the weede begin to appear
turn your harrow bottom side up
and levei the bills, thereby destroy.
ging the weeds and allowing the
potato plante to some up. When
the plant is two inches high go
through the patch with a cultivator,
and once more when it is four inches
high. This will free it from weeds.
Now-a.alaye the potato -hug is no
longer troublesome and Paris green
need not be used unless in cases of
necessity. When the plant is well -
grown take a scraper and bank up
the hills. Be careful to shake off
all earth from the plant itself, and
do not cultivate again before dig-
ging. The main argument for the
turd moist soil in preference to the
loose, friable, warns and sandy
ground, lies in the resistenoe which
the former offers to drought or pro-
tracted dry weather -the former soil
preserving the juices which the latter
soon loses. Dry weather and shndv
soil results in a sparse and stunted
crop, while the cool, moist loam re
sista the action of drought and the
longest stretch of dry weather can
only effect the crop imperceptibly -

A CLERGYMAN IN A• VERY
BAD PREDICAMENT
London May 17. -The sentences
passed upon Goodale, the evangelist
and Ron. Patrick Greville Nugent
for assaults committed upon unpro•
tected women journeying by rail,
do not seem to have a deterrent ef-
fect upon miscreants who find thein -
selves in the compartments of rail-
way carriages with women or girls
who are -travelling alone. Yester-
day a man named Windle was ar•
•
rested at Botford for assaulting e
cook, named Hannh Cordock, in
a railway carrrlage near Babyworth
As the train approached • the station
he jumped from a window of the
car, but was captured. Ho was ar-
raigned before a magistrate today
and remanded for trial.
The police had hardly digested the
details of this story. when another
oase'of the same kind was reported.
Rev. Kennedy Bell, rector of Little
Bedwyn, n village near Hungerford,
Miss Britain, daughter of the sta-
tion master of Kentbury, and Miss
Abery, a telegraph operator, were
travelling from Newbury to Great
Bedwyn, in the same compartment.
Mr. Bell spoke to the girls, and
they seeing from his attire, that he
was a clergyman, entered into con
versation with hitt. Finally Bell
made improper proposals to the
girls. They indignantly spurned
him, but ho took advantage of hie
superior strength and forced them
to comply with his wishes, thought.
not until they both made desperate
struggle to escape from his clutches.
Bell is a married man and has two
children. As usual, the commun-
ication,cord was notin working or-
der, and the girls, though they
shrieked at the top of their voices
for holp,conld not make themselves
heard above the rumbling of the
train. When the train arrived at
the station the girls palled the
guard and Bell was arrested.
