MONTREAL LIVE STOCK
MARKETS.
There were about 300 head of butchers'
cattlE, 100 zalves, and 400 sheep ai.d lambs
offered at the East End Abattoir. Trade
was good and prices had an upward ten-
dency all round. Prime beeves were in de -
mend, and sold at from 41- to 416 per lb.,
pretty good stook, inoluding fat bows, sold
at about 4o, and common dry cows at from
n to 31c per lb., with some of the hardest
looking bulls at about 2140 do. There was a
fair demand for veal (saves and prioes were
from $3 to 58 each, but the best were sold
before reaching the market. The sheep
offered were not a fancy lot, and prices con-
tinue low, or from $3 to $4.50 each. Good
lambs are in demand. Mr A. Lesperanoe,
of Bleary street, bought 13 superior lambs
at $4.25 each. They were of the Cotswold
breed, and were raised by a farmer in the
county of Vereheres. Common lambs sell
at from $2 to $3.25 each. Fat hogs are
rather dull of sale, especially large porkers,
which sell at about 50 per lb., but nice small
hogs bring 51 do.
Toronto College of Music
The Toronto College of Music has just
closed another very Successful year, with a
patronage taxing its utmost capacity. The
excellent quality of the work throughout,
as shown in the great number of high class
programs given during the year, -fully jus-
tifies its claim as first amongnCanadian
Musical Institutions. That this College
should take first rank is not to be wondered
at, when we consider that Canada's musi-
cal reputation is due in a great measure to
the ability and experience of Mr F. H. Tor-
rington, the veteran Conductor and Musical
Director of the Toronto College of Music.
For this and kindred reasons this institu-
tion affords many [advantages not possiBle
with any other School of Music in Canada.
Aside from its musical euperiority,a highly
appreciated feature is the home influence
felt by the students, Mr Torrington's fami-
ly residenoe being annexed to the college
building. Those sending their daughters to
the oity for a musical education will at once
see the value and importance of this social
privilege, We are in receipt of a copy of
the new 1892-93 College Prospectus, con-
taining full information, a oopy of whioh
will be sent free to any one on application.
The College opens for the Fall Term on
Sept. 5thr with tt staff V the most select
and best qualified teachers -in -the Dominion.

A sensational inoident took ylace at the,
church of S. John the Evangelist, Montre,
al, on Saturday. The banns for the mar-
riage of one Charles Morin and a young
woman were announced, but when the pas-
tor, Rev Arthur French, oame to the usual
question, whether anyone had any °Woo -
tion, a fashionably drama(' lady rose in the
church and deolared that she objected, as
the man had a wife living. The incident
caused a great sensation.
John S. Hollins, aged 94, of Middleton,
N. Y., has been married three times. He
was at a Honesdale hotel the other day and
told the diners that be intended to get mar-
ried before he went to his home in the ad-
joining town. As he is well-to-do, one of the
dining room girls offered to marry him. He
agreed, and but for the appearance of his
youngest son, 60, there would have been a
wedding on the spot. The old !gentleman
persisted and started off with the girl, only
to meet his granddanghter, aged 30, whose
efforts finally prevailed, and the marriage
was indefinitely postponed.
Mr John Miller, a well-known young man
of Belleville, was to have been married on
Saturday night to a handsome and highly
respected young lady named BlisaThrasher,
residing near Stirling, a graduate of Albert
College to whom he had for some time been
engaged. Invitations were sent, prepara-
tions folly made and on the eventful even-
ing the prospective bride arrayed herself
in wedding clothes, and, with her friends
and invited guests, were ready for the cere-
mony to begin. Mr Miller, however, did
not put in an appearance. Sunday !morn-
ing it was learned that Miller had left for
parts unknown.
Cheese making is one of Canada's great-

indurftrial progress may have been slow, in
this particular direction it has been simply
phenomenonal. The trade has grown from

day there are over 1,500 factories in Ontario

You may wonder why it is that the goods Which you e here
one day are gone when you come back to purchtm
them the next. The reason is, that the excellence and
variety whieh have characterized the season's goodgi are
such as to make their popularity inevitable. The odd
lines left from the summer stook are receiving Mr es,
pecial attention just now. The universal testimony of
those who have purchased these goods during the past
few weeks has been that it has been to their advantage
to make their selections from our stock. •
The fall assortment arriving almost every day now, and the
care and research we have exercised in purchasing
together with the extra buying ability represented by'
"Cash," assufts us that for style, newness, and assort-,
ment, it will be unequalled.
