THE BRITISH CATTLE MARKET.
Liverpool, may 23rd.
There is no ehange in prices here, States,
eteers and maiden heifers being quoted at
Qd to of, for tops. The prospects also are
better, and we think an advance may be ex-
pected if shipments continue light from the
States.
MONTREAL LIVE STOCK
MARKETS.
There were about 350 head of butcher's
cattle, 200 calvee and 150 sheep and lambs
offered at the East End Abattoir. The cold
rain seemed to dampen the spirits of both
buyers and sellers, and trade was dull at
about the same rates as on Thursday for
the best cattle, but common, stook was held
at rather higber prices than on that day.
The best cattle sold at 4ic a pound, with
pretty good stock at from 4i-43 to 4io do.,
while some of the leaner beasts sold down
to 30 per lb.
Tuesday morning at 6 o'clock a farmer
near Hanover named Joseph Brown was
attacked and it is feared fatally injured by
a vicious horse in his stable. The horse
seized Mr Brown by the right arm near the
shoulder, crushing the bone almost to a
jelly.
The wife of C. P. R. Section Foreman
Taylor, of Mattawa. who was alone in the
house with her sister, observed a tramp
coming in the direction of the house. She
barricaded the door and armed herself with
her husband's revolver, and when the
tramp appeared at the window shoved the
pistol under his nose and frightened him
away. After the tramp had left the wom-
an decided to examine the revolver when,
as usual, it discharged, the bullet lodging in
the sister's abdomen.

for consumption was $7,975,200, as against
$7,660,456 in April last year, or an increase
