•The market Committee's newly
,appointed Inspectors were token be,
lore the Recorder this morning
by Mr. Bauset, in order to he 'sworn
in. In udwiniutering the oath the
'Recorder considered it necessary for
them to swear that they did not be.
long to any secret society. At this
(point Mr. McNaughton dropped the
book, saying that he could not take
that oath, "I'm a Freemason," ho
said. The Recorder said he adrnir-
ed Mr. McNaught is frankness,
but really could not swear him
in under the circuwstances. The
civic by-laws forbade that its con-
stables belong to any secret
society. Mr. De Montigny swore

LAW'S UNCERTAINTY.
'Once a Goose," writes as follows
to the Nev York Sun :—Four years
ago I was a tailor, owned three
ttoUeee and a good business. A
Murray Hill dude got into my debt
for $250 ; could not get hits to pay
me. I advertised the bill for sale.
He then Hued me for $10,000
-dawa_es. 1 then put the bill up in
my shop with a note on it : 'Bad
Debt for Sale.' He sued me again
for $5,000. The judge at the court
said it was libel. My lawyer and his
lawyer now own two of the houses
that I once owned. After I settled
the cases, I met the dude with a suit
of wy clothes on. I then licked
I -Ie then sued me fur this,
and for this I now have a mortgage
on the other house. The only thing
I ever got from this one of the 400
-was his measure, I have it yet. It
is not for sale. My experience
is thin : I would sooner have a bad
debt than a good lawyer. I now
sell for cast,.' —New England

EGGS FOR ENGLAND.
Liverpool Mercury, September 19.
The experiment of shipping eggs
from Canada to England would
seem by accounts to hand to have
resulted in a great success. Like
all new ventures, it has met with a
great deal of opposition, principally
from those in the Dominion who
are interested in the drawing nearer
together of the United States and
'Canada, acid who, therefore, are in,
clined to look with disfayor on
every move and every enterprise
which tends to show that the colony
-"Cis independent of her neighbor, and
can, if the necessity arises, make up
in other quarters of the world what
it loses by exclusion frons America.
'The question of the shipment of
eggs, however, is only another in-
stance of the many that could be
adduced to show that the McKinley
tariff has failed of its objects and
Stas recoiled on the Americans to
theirserious detriment, for not only
has Canada been able to dispose re-
muneratively in English markets of
all her surplus eggs, hut consign
anents have found their way into
American markets, notwithstanding
the duty, and the consumer has had
to pay for the patriotism, so called,
sof the Legislature. During the first
three months of the present season,
that is, since the opening of naw
gation on the St. Lawrence to the
.31st July, 9,000,000 eggs have been
shipped from the Dominion to Eng-
'3and. From all sources in the
month of July alone there landed in
England nearly 91,000,000 eggs,
while in the six months the imports
were close on 725,000,000, the fig.
urea for the whole of last year be-
ing 1,234,949,520, of the value of
.£3,428,802 ! The value of this
anew branch of international trade is
fully realized by this time in Cana-
da, and it seems more than prob-
able that before long this jepart-
ment of commerce will have become
an established and profitable fact
with our colonial cousins.
THE BOYS WERE TOO
FRESH.
TEIIS IS TI -IE FIRM CONVICTION OF
MISS SNELLING, OF GUELPH.
The youth John Purcell was put
on trial at Guelph on the charge of
-committing a rape on a young wo,
man named Lydia Amelia Snelling
one evening in April last. The
prosecutrix was at that time en-
gaged as a nurse to an invalid lady
in Guelph, and going out for a walk
after dark a young elan accosted
her and asked leave to walk with
- her. On a little pressure from him,
..as stated by her, she consented to
r allow him to accompany her, and
when they bad arrived in a secluded
place the young man committed the
outrage. She swore positively that
'the prisoner was the person, though
she had only seen him once before.
Two young girls who knew the
prisoner testified to having met the
prosecutrix on one of the streets
which the latter stated she and her
companion walked through, and
along with her was a young man,
whom they took to be Purcell, with
whom they are both acquainted.
For the prisoner several witnesses
were Fbxamined, who stated- that at
tIlTtimeethe-,ou.trag.0.. was— aa.id,.,to,
have been committed they saw the
prisoner in a different part of the
, city for such a length of time as pre
.oluded the possibility of his having
been theguilty person. A constable,
who wascalled for the purpose of
showing that the prosecutrix had
tirade complaint to hiw shortly after
the outrage was said to have been
committed, stated that she prefaced
it by remarks that the boys about
here were getting too fresh. She
did not show any agitation at that
time, although it was only about a
quarter of an hour before, according
to her story, she had been ill treated.
Verdict, not guilty.
