From Harper's Lazar.
The \Vise 'rout of Israel long
ago compared a fair woman without
discretion t0 ''rt jewel I❑ a sow roe's
snout." The phrase has a course -
'less of aduud ullr'uyiye to modern
oars, but it would be Lard to find an.
other of adequate force.
What is discretion 1 It is the
power which unerringly sees what
conduct is fitting to any given time,
place, 0r" circumstance; the sense of
propriety which is innate with a
few, which can be taught to more,
and which is essential to all. It is
possible for sun)e to possess ibis
power without the inward graces
of purity and truth ; and it is also
possible for sowe of the finest traits
of character to exist in one who has
it not ; but without this inestimable
gift the fairer or the more brilliant
the woman, the more is she piti•
able.
1u Solomon's time, and lr.tor, as
the powers of woman were not yet
known, and was not supposed to be
capable of exercising discretion in
her own behalf, it was considered
necessary to Heeludei her from the
world in harem or in convent, lest
she become her own destroyer•
Now that generations of noble wo'
men have proved to the world wo•
man's right to he, trusted with her
own guidance, there has grows up
a tendency to overconfidence, and
too many young girls are left with.
out the help which they so need,
and older women could so easily
give them.
Youth should not be considered
to be above or beyond instruction.
The world truly moves, and sweet
"Rose in bloom," as beautiful ss
once was her aged grandmother,
knows much more of soma things
that the latter has ever dreamed of ;
for manners have changed as well
as fashions, and science has made
such rapid advances that the veriest
dunce, of a school girl would be as.
tonished at Newton's ignorance ;
but of the world's greatest problem
—human nature—the grandmother,
if she be possessed of but ordinary
wit, must know vastly more than
dear, sweet, and overtrustful little
Rose, therefore the latter should
heed the voice of age when it speaks
of manners and words which are
discreet or indiscreet, proper or im-
proper.
Discrection or a sense of proprio.
ty—by either term is the virtue
known—is like a perfume. It can-
not he touched, seen, weighed, or
described, but it exists, and makes
its presence and its absence known,
and is as essential to every woman-
ly wotnan, no matter what her age,
intellectual acccmplishments, beau-
ty, or social position, es is its per-
fume to perfection of the rose.

ABOUT TALE -BEARING.
I join with Beatrix, heart and
hand in sayin : from a gossips-Lg
u'+ighborhood "Good Lord deliver
tier How absurd for one neighbor
to toll another what is' Bald about
het 1 And often tattling is so exag-
gerated beyond the truth that it
gives rise to very bitter enmities. It
is so much easier to start an evil re-
port than to atop it. Even after a
rumor has been proven false the
harm it has done cannot alwaye be
undone. Before repeating a bit of
gossip, it would be well to ask our
selves three' questions :
First, "Is it true 1"
Second, "Ie it kind 1'
Third, "Is it necessary 1"
This practice would be sure to
save us from many bitter memories
and regrets. I now recall to mind
what I once read :
The pious Philip Nevi was once
visited by a lady who accused her•
self of slander. IIe bid her go to
market, buy a chicken just killed
and 6ti1l covered with feathers, and
walk a certain distance, plucking the
bird as she went. The woman did
as she was directed, and returned,
anxious to know the meaning dare
iujunction. "Retrace your steps,'
said Philip, "and gather np, one by
one, all the feathers you have scat•
teres." "I cast the feathers careless
yla way," said tAie woman, "and the
wind carried them in all directions."
"Well, my child," replied Philip,
''so it is with slander. Like the
feathers which the wiud has scatter
ed, your words have been wafted in
many directions. Call thew back
now, if you can. Go, sin no more."

A WIFE'S "PLATONIC" LOVE.
S. Wells 5 s
George
is a member of
the big wholesale dry -goods Ecru of
Allan, Sheldon & Co., and is worth
nearly $1,000,000. Frederick C.
Weyher is a wealthy wholesale gra
ver, reputed to be worth halt' a mil
lion, Mrs. Christie Weyher is the
handsome 3U -year old wife of the
latter, all of Detroit. 'these three
are the dramatis personle in a spicy
domestic drama, which yesterday
reached its denouement in a suit
begun by Weyher against Wells,
claiming $50,000 for alienation of
hie wife's affections.
Weyhor and his wife have been
married ten years and have one
child. In his bill Weyher says he
never suspected his wife's fidelity
uutil last July, wheu he learned
she had been seeing Wells, who is a
bachelor, clandestinely. He accus
ed hoc oi' being entirely too intimate
with Mr. Wells. She stoutly deni
ed this, but when he made detailed
charges she confessed that she had
been meeting him. She said that
while they had been very intimate
nothing wrong had been done, and
her only excuse was that they were
earnestly in lose, hut the love was
purely platonic. Weyhor learned
that his wife and Wells had been
together for nearly two weeks in the
summer of 1890. She had gone on
a trip to the "Soo" with her littlo
daughter Nettie and at Sarnia had
been met by Wells. They Contin•
ued their journey and at the "Soo"
liad registered as "S. 0. Wells, wife
and daughter." They came home
on the steamer United Empire, and
when at Sarnia stopped at the Iiel-
chJamber House under the name of
S. 0. Wells.
This seemed very suspicious to
Mr. Weyher and he resolved to
speak to his wife about the matter.
She admitted that they were depior
ably iu love, but that it was as
platonic as ever. She said she saw
no reason why true lovers should
not meet each other whenever they
pleased.
Mr. \Veyhcr could think of noth-
ing to say under the circumstances
and let it go at that. He now
brings suit in the Wayne Circuit
Court against George S. Wells for
$50,000.
The woman who has this precious
gift is by it alone protected
as by an invisible armor of proof.
She may not be safe from the ton,
gue of slander, for the finest armor
r,Jay be splashed with mud, but she
will be safe from any real injury.
Mud can bo washed away. Only
wounds leave scars.
The youngest or most friendless
girl who uses her wits and heeds
the warning which she surely re-
ceives from her inward sense ofpro-
priety whenever she is tempted to
violate its laws, can never go very
far wrong. It is a safe rule to
leave undone everything whose per-
fect propriety is not certain, unless
somelarger consideration is involved.
There are cases where a noble and
unselfish aim will atone for break-
ing the lam of propriety, but they
seldom =occur, and even the few
tbf%t.- t1P- ?r ll•,g,..n?An,X Pvils upon Ehe
law breakers. In a goof cause one
must be willing to suffer; but ne-
ver imagine that suffering of sort or
another will not follow every breach
of the laws of a genuine or even an
artificial code of propriety.
TOO LATE.
Perhaps Tennyson has written nothing
which appeals to the hearts of all who
read his poetry than the lyric of "Too
Late." The burden of the Bad refrain
comes home with telling force to the
hearts of those who have lost friends
by that dread disease-cunsunlptiOD.
They realize, "too late," the result o
neglect. They feel that the dear on
might have been saved, if they had heed
ed the warning of the hacking cough, th
pallid cheek, and the weakening system
They feel this all the more keenly be
cause tiny Bele others being rescued fro
the grasp of the destroyer, and the
think when it is saving others migh
have saved their loved one. When th
first signal of danger is seen, take step
to avoil the catastrophe. Be wise i
lime. Dr. Tierce's Golden Medical Dia
covery will drive away consumption. 1)
