THIE FRECKLED -FACED GIRL.
"Ma's upstairs changing her
dress," said the freckle -laced little
girl, tying her doll's bonnet strings
and casting her eye about for a tidy
large enough to serve as a shawl for
that double jointed young person.
"Oh, your mother needn't dress up
for me," replied the female agent of
the missionary society, taking a self-
•
satisfied view of herself in the mirror.
"Run up and tell her to come down
just as she is, in her every -day
clothes, and not to stand on cere-
mony."
"Oh, but she hasn't got on her
every -day clothes. Ma was all
dressed up in her new brown silk
dress, 'cause she expected Mrs.
Dimmond to day. Miss Dimmond
always comes over here to show oil'
her nice things, and ma doesn't
mean to get left. When ma saw you
coming she said 'the dickens I' and I
guess she was mad about something.
Ma said if you saw her new dress
she'd have to hear all about the
poor heathen, who don't have silk,
and you'd ask her fur more money
to buy hymn books to send 'em.
Say, do the nigger ladies use hymn
book leaves to do their hair upon to
make it frizzy ? Ma says she guesses
that's oil the good books do 'em if
they ever get any books. I wish my
doll was a heathen.
"Why, you wicked little girl, what
do you want of a heathen doll I" in-
quired the missionary lady, making
mental inventory of the new things
in the parlor to get material for a
homily on worldly extravagance.
"So folks would send her nice
things to wear and feel sorry to have
her going about naked. Then she'd
have hair to friz, and I want a doll
with curly hair and eyes that roll up
likegDeacon Sliderback's when lie
says amen on Sunday. I ain't a
wicked girl, neither, 'cause Uncle
Dick -you know Uncle Dick, he's
been out West and swears awful and
smokes all the house -Ile says I'm a
holy terror, and he hopes I'll be an
angel pretty soon. Mall be down in
a minute, so you needn't take your
coat off. She said she'd box my
ears if I asked you to. ;( putting
on that old dress she hat st yea,
'cause she said she didn't want you
to think she was able to give much
this time, and she needed a new
muff worse than the Queen of the
cannon ball islands needs religion.
Uncle Dick says you orter go to the
islands, 'Cause you'd be safer there,
and the natives'd be sorry they were
such sinners if anybody would send
you to 'em. He says he never seen
a heathen hungry enough to eat you,
'les 'twos a blind one, an' you'd set a
blind pagan's teeth on edge so he'd
never hanker after any other mission-
ary. Uncle Dick's:awful funny and
makes pa and ma die laughing some-
times.
"That's a pretty cloak you've got,
ain't it? Do you buy all your good
clothes with missionary money ? Ma
says you do."
Just then the freckled -laced little
girl's ma came into the parlor and
kissed the missionary lady on the
cheek and was delighted to see her,
and they proceeded to have a real
social chat. The little girl's' ma
can't understand why a person who
professes to be so charitable as the
missionary lady does should go
right over to Mrs. Dimmond's and
say such Ill-natured thliigs as she
did; and she thinks the missionary
is a double faced gossip.
TREBLE AND BASE.
"Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
Flow I wonder what you are."
In treble sweet piped little Grace,
"Catarrh, catarrh, catarrh, catarrh,
what a horrid pest you are ;"
Growled dear papa in deepest base.
Vi hen papa reads this he will learn
how to get rid of the pest. By its mild,
heeling, anti'eptie, and cleansing pro-
perties, Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy cures
the woret case,. Th!s infallible remedy
does not, like the poisonous, irritating
snuffs, "cream." and strong caustic solu-
tions with which the public have been so
long humbugged, simply palliate for a
short time, or drive the disease to the
lungs. It produces a perfect and per-
manent cure of the worst oases of Chronic
Catarrh. "Cold in the head cared with

removes offensive breath, loss or

tWRY SRU DIED.
While attending a patient in my
earlier professisnal life. -a woman
who, was in the first stages of inter•
wittent fever ---I found one day on
malting my usual call, a shall con-
gregation of women assembled in
the sick room. As I entered I
hoard the remark : "My cousin
Samantha's husband was tuk jist
this sr way and lasted only nine
days."
"Yes," said a slow spoken, florid
face, fleshy woman, "my daughter's
husband's sister had the same sick-
ness and we had a funeral in a week
-just a week to a day from the
time she was tooken. I went to the
funeral and counted forty teams in
the procession."
"What be yer givin' her, doctor I"
asked a third. "I tasted on it and
it appears like rhubarb and ging-
shang to me, and of 'tis, why la!
'twont do her a bit of good."
• "Doctor, did ye ever try penny•
royal tea ?" asked another. "My
Aunt thinner's father-in-law, who
doctored round here nigh onto thir-
ty-seven year, used ter say as how it
did beat uatur' how much good a
poultice did made of carrots and
'lasses, and he always had one put
on. Shan't we try one doctor I"
"Elderberry juice an' sassafras an'
Scotch snot' was what cured me
when I was as she is," volunteered
another.
"I writ to her mother last night,
that there wasn't no hopes and she'd
better come at once and take care of
the young ones," said a small, vine-
gar -face, lean woman, who was sit-
ting in a remote corner,
My patient did not recover. How
could she 1 Poor thing ! Neigh-
borly kindness killed her. She
had not the strength of Sampson,
neither had she toughness of a
thanksgiving turkey.
HIS POEM ll D NOT READ
RIGHT.
An editor was sitting in his office
one day, when a marl entered whose
brow was clothed with thunder.
Fiercely seizing a chair, he slammed
his hat on the table, hurled his
umbrella on the floor and sat clown
'Are you the editor 4' he asked.
'Yes.'
'Can you read writing 1'
"Of course."
'Read that then,' he said, thrust-
ing at the editor an envelope with
an inscription on it.
`B-,' said tife editor, trying to
spell it,
`That not a 'B'; its an '5,' said the
man.
'S' I Oh, I see. Well it looks like
'Sal for Dinner,' or 'Souls of Sin-
ners,' said the editor.
`No, sir,' replied the man ; `uoth.
iug of the bout. That's my name -
Brunner. I knew you couldn't
read. I called to see about that
poem of aline you printed the other
day entitled The Surcease of Sor-
row.'
`I don't remember it,' said the edi-
tor.
'Of course you don't, because it
went into the paper under the vii•
lainens title of 'Smearcase Tomor--
ro w.' '
'A blunder of the compositor I
suppose.'
'Yes, sir ; and that's what I want
to see you about. The way in which
'that poem was mutilated was simply
scandalous. I haven't slept a night
since. It exposed me to derision.
People think I am an ass. (The edi-
tor coughed.) Let me show you.
The first line, when I wrote it, read
in this way ; 'Lying by a weeping
willow, underneath a gentle slope.'
This is beautiful and poetic, Now,
how did your vile sheet represent it
to the public? `Lying to a weeping
widow, I induced her to elope.'
'Weeping widow,' mind you. A
widow ! Oh, thunder and light-
ning ! this is too much ! But look
at the fourth verse. That's worse
yet, 'Cast thy pearls before swine
and lose thelia iu the dirt.' He
makes it read in this foshion ; 'Cart
thy pills before sunrise, and love
them if they hurt.' Now, isn't that
a cold-blooded outrage on a man's
feelings ! I'll leave it to you if it
isn't.'
It's hard, sir, very hard,' said tie
editor.
`Then take the fifth verse. In
the original manuscript it said, plain
as daylight • 'Take away the jing
ling money. It is only glittering
dross" In its printed form you made
me say : "Take away the tingling
honey ; put some flies in foe the
boss.' By George I feel like attack-
ing somebody with your fire -shovel !
But; oh ! look at the sixth verse. 1
wrote : "I'm weary of the tossing of
of the ocean as it heaves.' When I
opened your paper, and saw the line
transformed into 'I'm wearing out
my trowsers till they're open at the
knees,' I thought that was taking it
an inch too 'far. I fancy I have a
Eight to murder that compositor.
rrCl-li r'h."er--. yi.. yi- +=. ee :•v .x....e+...v.
'He is out just now,' said the edi-
tor.
'Come in to -morrow.'
'I will.' said the poet ; 'and I will
come armed.'
