l bawk he queried;
'Chill Coming on ?'
'Chill! I'm seasick—sick from
head to heel I '
'Can't be --can't possibly be,' be
calmly replied. "I noticed you
had a bilious look when you came
down this morning. Ought to
look out for your liver.
'But I tell you I am in an awful
way ! I can't wait another min-
u'.e ! Here I go * * * !'
'Haven't the first symptoms
of seasickness,' he said as he bit
off an inch of plug tobacco. 'Why
you ought to have seen the man
I had--'
'Say, how much will you take
to go ashore ?'
'Now, hear him. This shows
what imagination can do.'
'Would a thousand dollars be
any object to you.'
.Now, then, get out those fish
lines, and open a few clams for
bate. Weil be among 'em in
less than five minutes.'
'Great Jupiter, man ! but my
head whirls like a top.'
'Can't possibly whirl—couldn't
do it for money. There isn't sea
enough on here to spill a glass of
water'.'
'And my stomach. Lands--'
`Get out those clams.'
'Clams, clams I wouldn't look
1 at a clam for ten thousand dollars.
Take mo home—take mo into a
swamp—up a tree—under water
—anywhere, to get out of this,
Shall I make it fifteen hundred—
two thousand ?'
'What's the matter now ?'
'Matter ? I'm dying.'
'Can't be—can't possibly be.
Not the slightest sympton ot'oven
being sick. A little billions, and
the glare of the sun does the rest.
I'd try a pint of salt water.'
'Heavens, but do you want to
see my boots overboard. Say, I'll
give you—'
'011, well, if your head aches
you might lie down for a while,
but don't get any foolish ideas into
your brain. Ocean a perfect
mill-pond—not the slightest heave
—boat seems to be spiked .to a
rock. Try a sandwich ? No?
Have a chaw ? No ? Like a
raw clam to sort of settle things ?
No? Well, lay down and keep
quiet. I take out babiesoccasion-
ally, but this time I forgot my
nursing bottle, Did you bring
a rattle box
'Say, captain.'
'Yes.'
'1—Lfeel- better.'
'Certainly.'
'And I'll—I'll get up.'
'Of course. Now, then, over
with that line; keep your eyes on
the water half a mile away, puc-
ker your lips into a whistle and
that rheumatiz will go off. That's
what It is. Can't possibly be
anything else. I'll give you
some shark ile to rub your j'ints
when we get ashore. There you
are—you've got a whopper—pull

KEEPING STEP.
Many years ago, said a well
known writer lately, I visited two
families in the city of New York.
The first was that of Mr Ledger,
a professional man of moderate
means. H had: a wife, two
daughters ant3Sp, son, who visited
in a circle made up of people
who all possessed a large income.
Tho Ledgers, howeyer, from time
to time gave balls and dinners as
nearly rivalling their wealthier
neighbors as their income would
permit. The girls wore costly
jewellery and laces and gowns
made by fashionable dressmakers.
'It is foolish, perhaps,' said
their mother, apologetically, 'but
we must keep stop ; We must keep
step with the procession.'
The second house to which 1
went was also ora poor profes-
sional man. IIs family had
gathered about them friends who
had culture and refin'bment, but
who set a just estimate on money
and fashion. They were not
ashamed of being poor, and made
00 pretence of wealth.
The morning after I arrived I
found the mother and daughters
busy packing a Christmas box
which was to go to a school fru'
colored children in .Alabama.
Each member of the family
brought something ; the father
had brought books, the girls had
dressed dolls, even the children
had mended their old toys and
eagerly packed them.
'Sarah has not yet brought her
share,' said Mrs Blank.
At that moment the old colored
cook came in with a bag of cool=ies
which she packed in the box with
smiles and triumphant nods.
'Sarah would be grievously hurt
if she could not keep step in the
good work,' said Mrs I3--, when
she had gone out.
These very different ideas of
'keeping step' interested me, I
followed the fortunes of the two
families.
As the years went on the
father in the first one died, and
the girls, with expensive tastes
a$ sordid ambitions were thrown
upon the world almost penniless
They .had learned no art, scienej
or craft thoroughly. They opened
a boarding house, and are still
banging en the outskirts of a
fashionable,cirole, boasting of in-
timacy witty people who care
nothing for them and fancying
vainly that they are 'keeping up
with the procession.'
The childl'ttn in the second
family also have scattered. Some
are married, others are earning
their own living;none are wealthy.
But whenever you meet one of
them, you find an earnest, cheer-
ful, friendly man or woman, who
is intent on making the world
better and happier and who ex• f
pects you andoeverybody else to
keep step in that noble wor'k—

CONSUMPTION CURED.
An old physican, retired from prae-
Cce, having had placed in his hands by
an East India missionary the forumla
of a simple vegetable remedy for the
speedy and permanent cure of consump-
tion. Bronchitic, Catarrh, Asthma and

positive and radical cure for Nervous
Debility and Nervous Complaints, after
having tested its wonderful curative
powers in thousands of cases, has felt
it his duty to make it known to his suf-
fering fellows. Actuated by this mot-

fering, I will send free of charge, to all
who desire it, this receipt, in German,

WOUNDED IN BATTLE.
A Rhode Island soldier. Liet.
George B. Peck, jr., in his story
of a 'Recruit Before Petersburg,'
describes his experiences and ob-
servations when first under tire.
He felt curious:, he said, to see
how men behaved in such cir-
cumstances. They took all man-
ner of positions, and he was
especially amused to observe how
some of them bobbed their heads
as the bullets flow past. But all
at once 'whit' sped a ball close
by his own ear, down went his
own bead and he laughed no
more at his comrades. The enemy
proved to be too strong for them
and a retreat was ordered.
I had reached the foot of the
hill when Ifelt a dull blow in the
neighborhood of my left hip. I
realized that I was shot and was
at once curious as to the amount
of damage. I looked down and
saw that the hole was too far to
one side to implicate the groin.
Forgetting a possible severed
artery, I threw my weight on
my left leg, and finding no bones
broken, began to laugh as the
lucicrousnoss of the affair flashed
upon me.
'You're never hit till you run'
was my first reflection, and my
second, 'Three weeks lacking one
day, and in the hospital. Such
is glory.'
Do you want to know how it
feels to be shot? Ask your broth-
er to step into the yard some
bright February ddy when the
water is running freely in the
streets, scoop a little handful of
snow from the top of the neatest
bank, spat it once only with the
hands at right angles, and hurl it
with ordinary force from a dis-
tance of twelve feet. The dull,
spreading sensation will be suf-
ficiently accurate.
I got across the creek, and after
trudging on a spell, using my
sword for a cane, I found myself
directly in front of Capt. Allen's
battery.
At the sear of this I began to
enquire for the hospital, and fin-
ally had a little farm house point-
ed out to me. Twenty yards
this side I met a couple of the
ambulance corps.
'Let us assist you,' they 'said.
'No; I can walk.'
'But let one of us take your
arm.'
I consented and started, but
the two men had to hold me up
for the rest of the way.
Near the house they laid me on
Use grass and one of them went
for a surgeon.
'Where are you wounded?' he
asked. I showed him.
'Let me examine it.'
'What for?'
'To see if a bone is broken.'
'Well, let 601120 one hold my
hands.'
An attendant, held them and
the surgeon explored the wound
with his Linger—at least he said
he did; 1 felt nothing.
'Lieutenant, you have had a
very narrow escape.'
I am perfectly well aware of
He took my silk handkerchief,
rinsed it thoroughly in told water
and laid it on the double wound.
That was all the dressing it re-
ceived for three days.
The next thing I knew I didn't
know much of anything. I was
winking and trying to open my
eyes. Soon 1 discovered tree
branches and men wearing caps.
I opened my eyes a little wider,
hearing returned to' my ears, and
the cannon's roar restored me to
myself. finis it was I scraped
acgnaintanee with the dogs of
war.
