The Sabbath is God' special present no the working man, and one of its chief ob- jects is to prolong his life, and preserve efficient his working tone. In the vital system it acts like a compensation -pond; it replenishes the spirits, the elate ticity and vigor, which the last six days have drained, and sup- plies the force which is to fill the SIX days succeeding; and, in the economy, ofexistenee, it answers! the same purpose as, in the econ- omy of income, is answered by a savings bank. THE LIFE THAT NOW 1S. I don't know about the unseen world, the use of the seen world is the right thing, I'm sure. It is just as much God's world and creation as the kingdom of Heaven with all its angels. How will you snake yourself most happy in it ? How at least, secure the greatest amount of happiness compatible with your condition ? By despairing to -day and looking up cloudward? Let us turn God's to -day to its best nee as well as any other part of the time tie gave us The bounties of our Father I believe to be countless and inexhaustible for most of us here in life; Iove the greatest, art (which is an ex- quisite, admiring sense of nature) the next. 1 will admire, if I can the wing of a cock sparrow as mach as the pinion of an arch- angel and adore God, the father of the earth, first; waiting for the completion of senses and the ful- filment of His intention towards me afterwards, when this scene closes o'er us.—W. M. Thackeray. outs LIVES BELONG TO eon Life is not the search after a well being, a happiness which is impossible on earth. Life is a mission, or it has neither value nor meaning. Life is not our own—it is of God; it has, there- fore, an airn and a law. IDLENESS THE. HOUR OF TEMP- TATION, God calls men when they are busy; Satan when they are idle. For idleness is the hour of temp- tation, and an idle person the devil's tennis ball which he tosses at pleasure, and sets to wot k as he likes and lists. Minard's Liniment cures distemper. C. C. ROMANCE IN REAL LIFE Not far out side New York city in one of the suburbs whose shores aro splashed by the water of the Hudson,'Stands as tidy and attractive a house as it is possible to find, says Edward W Bok, in the Ladies' Home Journal. Its plate windows glisten brighly in the run, the well -kept lawns are the comment of every -one who Irides by; in short, it is an ideal suburban home. It is occupied by a woman, now a trifle over forty years of age, with a face which still bears the marks of its singu'a- beauty in youth. Early in life she was obe of the belles ()Cone of our great eastern cities. She became engaged to a young man of brilliant prospects and social standing; but a lover's quarrel broke off the match, and almost shattered the intellect and health of the beautiful girl. She left home, and living alone and in poverty, she determined to begin a career for herself. She bad a literary talent, and this she deveioped by writing stories. At first she met with poor success,. but faced by starvation and too proud to return to her family, she resorted to writing sensational stories for the cheap weeklies. Success began to favor her, and she soonifoun1 her stories in great - et demand than she could men- tally supply them. Night and day she worked with the pen,how- ever, and for eightyears site toiled on, denying herselfeyery pleasure and comfort, carrying ninety cents of every dollar which she earned to the savings' bank. Her goal was for a home of her own, nestled in some quiet place,some- where away from the theatre of her youthful career, where, all alone, she might enjoy the peace and quiet for which :her aching snul pined. At the end of nine year* tubo ,Chose. thi spot st;,e now lives, pled under ltic eye, built the beautiful little which to-dsy is her temple of During the.tocess of Wain kept Oh with ber literary NV rk, writing more industriously ever to gain a cormpeteec which she might live. Then, directly opp to ber house, began to rise, years ago, a palatial reside now completed, the upperdows of which often throw the re- flection of the setting sun into the opened door or curtained win- dows of the more modest dwelling of the literary recluse. The handsome home on the western side of the river is that of a rich mcrehant, whose wife is a well- known society leader, and whose children are the admiration of their circle. The merchant knows not who lives in the trim little house on the opposite shore. The sweet-faced woman, whose life -happiness now is within ber- self and her home, is ignorant of the occupant of the mansion on the other shore. Only a few per- sons know the occupants of both houses, and they do not lift the veil, for peace and contentment dwell in the houses on both shores, and why disturb their tranquility?
