The moat daring robbery ever per- petrated in Montreal was- effected on Monday night in the jewelery store of W. S. Walker, Notre Dame street. Mr Walker is known as the leading dia- mond dealer of the city, and always had a tempting djsplay in his window. At ten minutes to six, when the street tvas crowded in the most central part of the town two men stopped at the window. While one with a piece of picture frame fastened the door the other broke the plate glass window with a hammer and snatohed a tray of diamonds and gold rings, whose value is estimated at $8,000. The men made for a sleigh, and being pursued the one drove off without his companion, taking the tray with him and going towards the east end. The other doubled and ran. He was overtaken and arrested, but none of the goods were found in his possession. When brought to head- quarters he refused to give his name and nothing oan be learned as to his identity. The men are strangers, and Were well armed, and bore the appear- ance of prosperous American crooks. • RAVE ABOUT '160 ENDS Cr OLC10S, DRESS. GOODS, ezo. M.
