WHEN WOMEN SHOULD
MARRY.
Probably the best time for the
average civilized woman to starry
would be any age between 24 cud
36. It is not said that uo woman
should marry earlier or later than
either of these ages ; but youth and
health and vigor are ordinarily at
their highest perfection between
these two period. Very early mar-
riages are seldom desirable for
girls, and that for many reason,.
The brain is iii i atule rho
reason is feeble and the char-
acter is unformed. The cue
sideratious which would prompt a
girl to marry at 17 would iu uiauy
case have very little weight with
her at 24. At 17 she is a child, at
24 a woman. Where a girl has in-
telligent parents the seven years be-
tween 17 and 24 are the period
when mind and body are most
amenable to wise discipline, and
---best repay the thought and toil de-
voted to their development. Before
17 few girls have learned to under•
stand what life is, what discipline is
what duty is. They cannot value
what is best, either in the father's
wisdom or in the mother's tender-
ness. When married at that child-
ish period they are like young re-
cruits taken fresh from the farm and
the workshop,: and hurried off to a
long campaign without any period
of I.tretitli1nary 'drill and training,
or like a schoolboy removed from
school to a curacy without being
sent to the university or to a theolo
gical hall. Who can help grieving
over c child-ivifo, especially if she
have children and a husband who
is an inexperienced and possibly ex-
tr,tine bey -man '? The ardor of his
love soon euuls ; the visionary bliss
.of Lev poetical imagination vanishes
`like the ynrnnier mist; there is
nothing left but disappointment
and \vonder that what promised to
be 80 heautifn1 and long a day should
nave clueded over"' almost before

Till L'EEECHES BIBLE.
]Ia(tfurd rates :--A well -pre
gorved volume of the genuine old
"Breeches Bible," so called, is in
the possescion of Mr. Horace John-
son, of Hartford. It was printed
in London in 1602, in the old "black,
letter" text-euough to spoil the
sight of any but the moat persistent
reader ; but it was a kind of.. print
with which Shakespeare and Lord
Bacon':were familiar. This edition
—probably copied from the "Bis-
hop's Bible" of 1568—derives its
inovt'reut name from.the version of
of Adam and Eve in the
?( Ta chanter iii., v. 7, after
t. e l l i r•. ; of the transgrrsslUlh it reads:
7, Then the eyes of them both
,,ere opened, and they knew that
they ',vora naked ; and they sewed
fig -tree leaves together, and made
thowarlves breaches.
That picturesq're attire is changed
in King James' version, which ap•
1,t.ared nine years later, to "aprons',
-the present accepted version.
King .Tames' fifty-four translators
only rade alterations of the Tyn-
dale and Coverdale text, and of the
"Bishop's Bible;" when it was found
to be "necessary." The new Bevis-.
ed version, however, makes a good
many changes. It cost poor Tyndale
his life --he was burned at the stake,
neer Tlroesels, in 1536—for daring
to make a translation into English.
'1'hi.s quaint old Bible includes
those tld Testament books that
ha. si;"4e been -relegated to the
nebulous limbo of "the Apocrypha,"
and includes them without any nark
of operation from those that are now
accepted. There are the books of
Baruch, of Susannah, of Jesus the
son of Sirach, the book of Macca-
bees, Fsdras, Tubit, 13e1 and the
I)ragou, etc, all figuring as a part of
the divinely inspired word. If we
eau 1,elieve the various holy "coun-
cils" un those subjects more or loss
of tht:so apocryphal books are not so
inspired. -
Mr. Johuson'e old bible contains
elFo the quaiut psalmody of Stern•
hold and Hopkin—the psalms of
David "done into" English verse.
The quaint character of the
teechanical work alone of this old
Bible makes it au interesting study
to any one, especially one who
knows much about printing. Un-
f('r.tnnateiv, „the quaiut old title
page is missing, its place being sup-
plied by a pen and ink copy.

The Afghan stutter's metheti' of
vengeance on his rebel prisoners is
pretty highly developed. One
batch, numbering 300, were put to
death three a day. Our of the trio
was always hanged dressed in yel-
low and green, another was
dressed iu black and blown front a
gun, and the third was dressed in
red and cut up with a sword.
SEVERLY ATTACKED.
I was severely attacked with
diarrhoea and vomiting, the pain was
intense and I thought I could not
live till morning. Six doses of Dr.
Fowler's Wild Strawberry cured me
and I have not had the least symptom

The seat of the bitterest hostility
to the Jews has been the city of
Vienna, but vengeance seems to
have Colne upon it et last. A great
event in Vienua every year has
been the international grain market,
the great market for the continent.
Last year 6,000 persons attended it.
But last spring Hebrew reseutureut
was stirred to such a point that 250
firuis of Buda I'esth signed a declare
tion that they would not deal in
Vienna, and the movement was
supported in various towns of Hun-
gary and in Prague. The Vienna
association, seeing the dangerous ex-
travagance to which the auti-Semitic
agitation had been carried, petition-
ed the emperor to allay it, but the
result cuuld not be avoided. The
efforts of the Jews have made the
corn market of this year a compara-
tive failure. Instead of the 6,000,
merchants of 1888, there have been
but 2,000, and a proposition has
arisen also to establish another in-
ternational corn minket at Ptll is.

OLD E1t•TIT AN HE LOOKED.
An Irishman was ordered to make
a coffin which he did ; and to paint
the inscription on the lid, which he
did after a fashion that caused a
little excitement in the churchyard.
By dint of following the written
copy, he.mauaged to get as far as
"Michael O'Itafforty, aged—;" but,
try as he would, lie could not re-
present the 28.
At last he remembered that he
could write seven, and that four
sevens made 28. So he finished
the inscription, which rears "aged
7777."
When they emote 1,ury Michael,
the coffin stood at the grave side,
and the priest spoke as follows : •
"Ab he was a fine lad. He's ly-
ing there so still, taken away in 'the
very prime of life. Young as he
was, too. only—" Isere the priest
looked down at the coffin plata to
see how old Michael was.
Ile was only," said his reverence
again, and put his glasses on, and
went nearer to sea how how old he
really was. ."He was only," he con -
ti ntied, "sevau thousaud, seven huu
filed, and seventy seven years!"
