at Paisley of a widow named Mrs.
\Villiseroft was completely totted
by fire. Mrs. \Villiseroft, who is
about, 70 years old, escaped in her
night clothes, with two grown
daughters ; but her grandson, 11
years old, fainted in getting to the
stairs and became a victim to the
flames.

The County Council of. Huron is
not the only one which is agitated
over the care of the poor and help-
less. The county council of Went-
worth passed the following at its
recent session :-Thatsano uniform
system for the care and mainten-
ance of the poor exists in the coun-
ty, it is expedient that steps be
taken at the present session of the
council to bring about so desirable
an object, be ;t therefore resolved
that the Warden and Messrs. Fer-
guson, Calder and the mover be a
committee to advertise for tenders
for land, say about fifty acres, on
which to erect suitable buildings to
accommodate the poor of this coun-
ty. The committee aro instructed,
if they deem it advisable, to visit
not more than three industrial farms
and houses of refuge and report to
this council at its June session
