Our kickers, 4eciprocity men, and
collifilereistl unionists, ate little, in-
clined to analyze their position. They
harp upon 60,000,000 of population;
then revert to the gra$i advantages
of Free Trade. They denounce their
opponents as restrictionists, talk of
low prices, dull times, and of Cana-
dians emigrating to the United States;
then back they go licking around the
old stump of reciprocity. They wax
wrathy and valient, and spout war on
certain restrictions anent the Behrings
Sea. They tell eery body not to
"pluck the eaglets feathers,
as they wrongly assert, Canada and
the United States are more closely
connected than any other two coun-
tries. Does any one suggest the pro-
priety of first ascertaining whether
our neigh rs 171 give us Free
Trade. The ickers dodge the pro-
position by saying, "You might as
well ask;" then follow with a half-
dozen irrelevancies, particularly ir-
relevant because most of their illogic
"You might as well asks," referred so
Canada's trade with her other sisters
in the British Empire then they re-
turn to licking the same stump.
Sometimes they.have an attack of
local patriotism, and own. that On-
tario is better governed than any
other country in the • world. Her
civic policy is.extolled sky high; and
her present crops the best. In the
midst of their etultation, the sight of
Sir John sitting at the king's gute,to
to speak, at once chills their love of
country, and back they run to lick
the old stump; and the land is again
nauseated by their clamorings for
unrestricted reciprocity
Seriously, let us observe the ques-
tion. Our kickers ask the United
States to pass an Act of Congress,
readjusting their whole tariff in such
a manner as shall enable thein to
raise revenue, to the amount of:more
than $70,000,000,by other means than
are at present employed. This would
place our neighbors in the anomalous
and irritable position of having
passed laws, partial and discriminat-
ing, to foster the commerce of Canada
as against the rest of the world, and
stamp upon them such a character
among the nations as no people would
eyer willingly bear. "Thou bast
multiplied the nation and not in-
creased the joy," is the declaration
of the most far-seeing poet the world
ever saw, and notwithstanding the
(apse of more than 2500 years since
he spoke them, the words are still as
good as new.
What do our kickers want? More
gold? Quite a common want. But
are not Canadians togday, worth
more per capita. than the Yankees
are? What do our kickers want?
Greater commerce? A laudable
wish, truly. But is not the commerce.
of Canada, relatively, growing much
faster than that of the United States?
What doi our kickers want? More
general prosperity? A praiseworthy
desire, certainly. But where can
they find it? How can they obtain
it? , By unrestricted reciprocity ?
At the old stump again ? If Free
Trade with the United States, and an
unscalable tariff wall against all other
countries would so materially en-
hance the joy of Canadians, we would
naturally infer that the bliss of Yan-
keedom is without alloy,
Under the lunar light of republi-
can puffery Kansas was called the
"garden of the earth." Several im-
poverished counties of that happy
state, have solicited and received
public aid to keep off absolute star-
vation. The same may be said of
parts of Dakota,Oregon, Illinois and
other States.
Montana, so lately in the throes
of puffery, is now soliciting Federal
assistance to irrigate her fertile (?)
prairies, so as to enable her to raise a
little bread. Parallel cases could be
multiplied ad infinitum, but it is
needless.
What do our kickers want? Re-
ciprocity? Free Trade ? Commer-
cial Union ? Annexation? No,they
don't. It is all bosh, poliitcal clap
trap and rot. Well, then what do
you want? . Kickers, tell the truth.
Come, speak up, what do you want?
If you please, We want want the -
Go on, answer the question at once.
If you please,we want the -the straps
-Go on, We want the reins of gov-
ernment, boo, hoo-oo. There, there,
don't cry. We knew that was what
you wanted all the time, and we do
most sincerely hope that you may
soon obtain your wish, for we candid-
ly believe that you are, in "bvery re-
spect better statesmen, than our pre-
sent rulers. Yes, you I want control
of the treasury, but you employ the
worst possible .means to obtain it;
because you encroach upon the do-
main of the people's self-respect, ab-
solutely inculcating treasonable ideas
and teaching disparaging opinions of
both Canada and England. This is
treason, and can have no other than
a negative influence, when tested in
the crucible of the ballot.

Rev. II. M. Eaton, writing to
the Machias (Me.) Republican, re-
lates a story which itlustrates
man's inclination to attribute to
Divine will the wishes of his own
heart. In the early days of Maine
Methodism, ho says, it was the
custom for young ministers to con-
sult their presiding elders before
taking a wife. Once during •a
camp -meeting in eastern Maine a
young minister approached the
presiding elder and said ho wish-
ed to be married. "Whom do you
propose to marry ?"asked the eld-
er. " Well" said, the young man,
" the Lord has made known to mo
very clearly that I should marry
sister Mary Turner." "I know her
well," Said the elder, " she is a
fine girl. I will sec you again be-
fore the meeting closes," 'During
the week four other young minis-
ters consulted the presiding elder
on the subject of marriage. Each
of them gave the name of the same
young woman to whom he propos-
ed to offer himself. They had all,
prayed over the matter a groat
deal, and each was certain that it
was God's desire that he should
marry the person named. On the
last day of the camp -meeting, at
goon, the elder called the five
young ministers to his tent to re-
ceive his opinion. He said : "Now
brethern, it may be the will of
God for you to marry, but it riot is
His will that five Methodist min-
isters should marry that little sis-
ter Mary Turner."
Connected with the reciprocity
fad, it is claimed that it would settle
our fist and seal difficulties. This is
the weakest plank in the „whole fad,
and displays less wisdom than does a
gentle, pious lady who marries a man
to reform him. If be prove incor-
rigible, and will not reform, as is
generally the pease, she may pro-
cure a divorce.
Not so Canada, for once she is in the
eagle's clutch, her freedom is gone
for ever. President Napoleon soon
becomes Emperor of France.
Our present difficulty can otly be
settled by a special and separate
treaty; reciprocity would not affect
the question, unless as we judge by
their style of reasoning, our kickers
purpose to surrender the fisheries,
unconditionally, to the United States.
We have shown that unrestricted
reciprocity is not to be hoped for,
that the policy of nations cannot en-
courage it,unless it is made universal.
Theory is 'all very well' until con-
fronted by facts. The specious vapid
sort of logic used by tho boss ki;kers
would disappear under the force of a
your command. Avail •r, ;r -elf

A MONOMANI4
Rev. Dr. Earp, late rector of
St. Andrew's Eppiscopal. Church,
Ann Arbor,Mi ;h., was on Satur-
day night removed to Battle Creek
Sanitarium for, treatment, his
financial troubles having effected
hiin very seriously mentally. He
was considered one of the strong
est men in the diocese, and was
much beloved by his people. Ho
was prominently mentioned as
candidate for Bishop to succeed
the Late Bishop.•I3arris.' His diffi-
culties are said to be the result'of
long -continued labor --over twenty
years without a rest. Rumors as
to his financial,difficulties have be-
come known facts. Dr. Earp had
very peculiar notions about finan-
cial responsibility. Ile has bor-
rowed money right and left from
his parishioners and from the
banks. Tho most distressing case
in connection with Dr. Earp's
recklessness is the pra tical ruin
of fin'osteemod bank official who
had the utmost confidence in the
rector. Dr. Earp, it is stated,
borrowed about $7,000, giving his
notes for the amount, which were
held by,a bank. When thn notes
matured Dr. Earp asked for them
and for a largo amount in' cash,
tendering in payment for the
whole a cheque on a Ypsilanti
bank, which was accepted. When
the cheque was presented for pay-
ment at the Ypsilanti bank it was
not honored. Tho bank, however,
lost nothing, as tho amount was
mads good by Dr. Earp's friends.
It is not believed that there was
any fraudulent intent, but that
Dr. Earp was a monomaniac.
