There maybe times of drought, in which
Our hearts would siuk, would fail ;
Times, when we e'en do murmur,
And of our lot complain.
,Yet, here, we may have water,
And drink and be refreshed.
For my presence shall be with thee,
And I will give thcc rest.
There too, are times of pestilence,
Of sorrow, pain and death,
When these we love are smitten,
And fail as in a breath.
Around je,dgeolation,
And we are sore distressed.1
But my presence shall go with thee,
And I will give thee rest,
There may be foes to oppose us,
Or friends, we can scarcely think.
The waters sometimes may be bitter,
So bitter we cannot drink.
We wonder why He has brought us
Into this dreary waste.
But my presence shall go with thee,
And I will give thee rest,
Do we ever come to the border,
Of that delightful place,
Do we have some richer foretastes,
Of that sweet promised peace,
Then away again to the desert,
Until we are fitted .best,
To live in His blessed presence,
And enjoy the Eternal Rest.

BUFFALO, July 9.—By what ebould 1 thing
have been regarded aa a fictitious combine.
tion of circumstance 1, there occurred simu}
taneously in this city one day last week, t
convection of the National Amateur Press
Association, and a most mysterious murder -
If it is the sine of theta amateur editors to
train themeelvea fora professional news-
paper life, they should, in my opinion, have
adjourned the convention immediately upon
the receipt of the news of Lung Sing's mur-
der, and turned in tooth and nail upon an in-
vestigation of the mystery.
It may be years before they will
to again
have such a golden oppor ynity that tobrperfectapeh of

This murder of Lung Sing,Chinese laundry-
man, which occurred on Thursday last, has
not only baffled the skill of the police but has
successfully defied the detective ability of the
Buffalo press. The fact that fifty young
men who hope some day to be real editors,
could sit calmly in a cool hall discussing the
ethics of journalism, while the possibility of
such a 'scoop" as the unravelling of this; mur-
der mystery was lying around loose, would
not seem to argue well for their chances of
adorning the business in which they hope to

That the National Amateur Press associa-
tion had a good time here at their convention
goes without saying. The people of Buffalo
seem to be fully aware of the excellent rep-
utation wbieh Buffalo is making through-
out the country as a desirable convention
centre, and are doing wont they can to
maintain it. I might fill this letter with a
list of the conventions which are scheduled
for the remainder of the summer.
The most important of these, should it take
place, is a convention which is, I am told,
being very quietly arranged 'for the latter
part of August by the baudsome and accom-
plished private secretary of Governor David
B. Hili Col. Rice, who succeeded Col. Dan
Lamont as confidential adviser of the gov-
ernor of the Empire state, is said to he agi-
tating the assemblage in conventsecion
here el of
all the gubernatorial private
iz
the United States. The state which has
raised a governor's private secretary to the
private secretaryship of the president of ths
United States is clearly entitled to the first
private secretary's convention. It is not
ttnderetood that politics are to play any part
(that is openly) at this gathering. The meet-
ing is rather to be one of social importance.
In
1S83 CoL Dan Lamont, while secreta
for Grover Cleveland; put in the opening'
wedge for a closer acquaintance among the
private secretaries of the Union by addressing
a personal letter to each of them requesting
their autograph signatures. The idea struck
the P. S.s of other governors as being a good
one, and the result was a general interchange
of autographs and photographs. Now Cot
Rice, who is acknowledged to.have the hand-
somest face in tbe collection, wishes a closer
acquaintance with his colleagues, hence the
convention idea. •
As, among the perquisites of each Private
Secretary is a large and picturesque assort-
ment of railroad passes, there ought to be no
difficulty in securing a general attendances

terviewers of the United States could beheld

Ono of, the most gorgeous buildings, out-

in these -days is the Daily and Sunday News

and as every inch of its five stories is devoted
to its own uses the magnitude of tbe business
of this popular afternoon penny paper can be
readily perceived.

illustra-

a ouch handsomer and more imposing build-

to that much discussed picture, "The Russian
Wedding Feast;" which I mentioned in one
of my former letters and which has been
locked up from public gaze ever since its ar-
rival in America, there are two pictures
either one of which worth a long journey to
see. These are the "Last Hours of Mozart,"
loaned to the Fair by es -Gov, Ager of Mich-

to be over 400 paintings in the collection.

Otte of the most ingenious til'
modern railway inventions is that
which allows the engine of a fast
express to pick up waters without
stopping, from water troughs
constructed between he rails.
Meeting a Pittsburgh Railroad
engineer in. Jersey City, a Star
reporter asked hint to explain the
modus of the scoop down from the
tender into the trough between
the rails, the fireman stands ready
to turn on the tap into the water -
tank ; we hear a hollow sound as
the iron of the trough" rings ben-
eath our feet,then a rush of water;
ten seconds more the water ,is
splashing up against the top of he
tank, the tap is turned off oven
more hastily than it was turned on
the scoop is drawn up, and wo aro
speeding on our v%ay with the wa-
ter -troughs lying far behind' us.
Tho fireman dons well to bo
prompt; cases have bion known
whore ho has neglected or failed
to lift up the scoop in time, and
the water has overffowLd the tank,
flooded the tender, sot pick and
shovel and coals all afloat, and
surging up against the firebox
door, gone near to putting the fire
out altogether.
At the points where the troughs
begin and terminate the lino rises'
slightly. By this moans bot tht+
water is prev(nte l from running
nut of the troughs, which cannot
have ordinary ends .lest a scoop
should strike against them, and
also 1h) scoop is automatically
pushed up and the pipe closed, if
tho driver fails to lift it before the
engine reaches the end of the
