We weep; fax sad ie dear, ,to•day, And wait the world were better, And from Fate's hands w ou1,3 tear away '.i'be heavy iron fetter Qf sorrev., wherewith she doth bind Hearts that deserve the sweetest And happiest lot mortals can find; Lives fairest and completest. We rail at wrongs and pray that God Will right earth's baleful badness; But should we not bow 'math the rod, And find the good of Badness? Is not day more glad that night It ever follows after? What eyes more fair than those made By tears as well as laughter? [bright The present's pain and trouble earns The future's peace and joy— The gold that in the furnace burns Comes forth without alloy. The soul that bears the cross of woe - And tells the saddest story On earth, in Heaven's peace shall know The heights of love and glory. What need to try, with eager hands And patient, strong endeavor To reach those far-off fairer lands, The calm, the bright "Forever"? How triumph in our victory, Were there no need fur lighting The sins and woes that round us be, The wrong things that need righting? How joy in sunsliine after rain, The laughter after sadness; The crown, whioh by the cross we gain, If life were only gladness ? • CONSUMPTION CURED. An old pbysican, retired from prac- tice, having had placed in his hands by an East India missionary the forumla of a. simple vegetable remedy for the speedyand permanent cure of consump- tion, Bronchitis, Catarrh. Asthma and all throat and Lung Affections, also a positive and radical cure for Nervous .Debility and Nervous Complaints, after having tested its wonderful curative powers in thousands of cases, has felt it his duty to make it known to his suf- fering fellows. Actuated by this mot- ive and a desire to relieve human suf. fering, I will send free of charge, to all who desire it, this receipt, in German, French or English, with frill directions for"preparing and ue,ing. Sent by mail by addressing with stamp, naming this paper, W. A. Noyes, 149 Power's Block, Rochester, N. Y. 13012-y.e.o.w. "Truth isa plant that grasps the soil and Seeks the sun, • From a firm foundation it rise) higher • Sln contracts oar view of things, and narrows the circle in, which our feelings move. But , grace expands, liberalizes and vitalizes our views and purposes. -S. J. Wilson, 1). U. and higher. . If our faith has not for its basis the witness of (,lod,. to which we must submit as to authority out- side of, superior to, and indepen- dent of, our • personal, judgment, then that faith is no faith.—A. Monod. ' The' •martyrs to• v'iem fat% exceed the martyrs to virtue, both in•en- tlurance and number. So Minded are we by our passions, that we• suffer more to be damned than to by saved.—Colton. Yesterday is yotla•s no longer ;.- tu-morrow may be never yours; but to -day is yours, and in the living present you may stretch forward to things that are before. —F.. W. Farrar. When the Queen of Madagascar shut up the saloons in her king= dom, and her ex -.saloon -keepers asked for compensation, she re- plied : ' Compensate those you have wronged and I will pay the Balance.' TII E WORK OF THE. SPIRIT iN ADOPTION. A gentleman much perplexed on the subject oftho Spirit's wit- noss, desired me to explain it to him; and, believing that he al- ready possessed it, I asked him to describe his views and feelings on the subject, when he said; ' I cer- tainly feel that 1 have experienced a great change, and can now ap- proach God with filial confidence and love.' 'Then most assuredly,' said I, 'you have the very thing about which you are inquiring; for, according to the apostle, the witness of the „Spirit is the power given to believers to view God in his pati $nal character, and to draw nigh to him with the simplieity, confidence and affection of dill• siren. 'Because ye are sons,, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts,c'rying Abba, Father.' It is the indwelling Spirit that enables us to approach God as our Father, arld thus bears witness to our adoption into the divine family.' --Robert Young. THE HOME OF HOLINESS IS IN TJJE HEART. The hidden life, which God im- parts to his accepted people, may flourish in solitudes and deserts, far from the societies of men and the din and disturbance of cities. From the cave of the hermit, from the cell of the solitary re, cluse, the fervent prayer has of- ten arisen, which has been accep- table in the sight of God. But it would be a strange but fatal mis- conception, that religion, even in its most pure and triumphant ex- altations, can flourish nowhere else. The home of holiness is in the heart, irrespective of outward Aituationstagd alliances; and there- fore we may expect to find it, if there are hearttl adapted to its reception and growth, . in the haunts of bneineas as well as in tb M1C'enGb fCretireneet; in the pr►laces o Rivrne a& well as in the (leeerts of the Metals. it Ls, h ;fatal mistake to suppose that we cannot be Holy except on the cou- dition of a situation and circum- stances in life such as shall suit ourselves, It is one of the first principles of holiness to leave our time and our places, out going out and our coning in, our wast- ed and our goodly hei itage entire- ly with the Lord. Here, 0 Lord, hast thou placed ua, and we will glorify tree hero.—Selected. Pullman Vestibuled Train It is universally conceded that, not- withstanding the advent of old and new lines iuto the field of competition for passenger traffic between Chicago, Mil- waukee, St. Paul and Minneapolis, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railway maintains its pre-eminent position as the leading line, and carries the greater portion of the business between these points. It is not hard to account for this, when we consider that it was the first in the field, and gained its popular- ity by long years of first-class service. It has kept up to the tunes by adopting all modern improvements in equipment and methods, the latest being complete PullmanVestibuledtrains running daily between Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Minneapolis, and its route being along the banks of the Mississippi, through the finest farming country, the most populous and prosperous towns and villages, it offers to its patrons the very best service their mcney can buy. Its dining cars are celebrated through- out the length and breadth of the land as being the finest in the world. Its sleeping cars are the best belonging to the Pullman company, being marvels of elegance, cotnfort and luxury; its day coaches are the best made, and its em- ployees, by long -continued • service in oir'rt:spective capacities, are experts, courteous and accommodating to all. It is not at all strange, therefore, that an intelligent and discriminating tra- velling public should almost exclusively patronize this great railway, with its separate through linea running between Ohicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Min- , neapolis; ('hicago, Council Bluffs and ' Omaha; Chicago, Kansas City, and St. Joseph, Mo. The ems- nent scientists, Tyndall, Huxley and Bee - le endorse this and the authorities cannot be disputed. The regular method of treat- ing these diseases lane been to apply an ir- ritant remedy weekly, and even daily, thus keeping the delicate membr.+ne in a con- stantustate of rration, allowing it no chan- ce to heal, and as a natural consequence of such treatment not one permanent cure has ever been recorded. It is an absolute fact that these diseases cannot be cured by any application made oftener than once in two weeks for the membrane must get a chance to heal before an application is re- peated. It is now seven years since Mr. Nixon discovered the parasite n catarrh and formulated his new treats int, and since then his remedy has become a house- hold word in every country where the Eng lish language is spokeu. CURES RFFECTED BY HUI SEVEN TEARS AGO ARE CURES STILL, THERE HAVING BEEN NO RETURN OF THE 1)I- SEASE. So highly are these remedies val- ued, that ignoraut imitators have started up everywhere, pretending to destroy a parasite, of which they know nothing, by remedies, the results of the application of which they are equally ignorant. Mr. Dix• on's remedy is applied ouly once in two weeks and from one to three applications effect a. permanent cure in the must aggra- vated cases. Mr. Dixon sends a pamph- let describing his new treatment en the re- ceipt of stamp to pay postage, The ad- dress of A. H.
