The Clinton New Era, 1889-01-18, Page 4}5TQP ,1 1.4% SO Auk 10jottoo has often. been vo1441itted . ,judges alive stock > fairy that any breeders have lefµsed for ye 'sast to exhibit their .annuals, The prises have fenquently iboen given to the fat - teat animas, regardless of their -pedigree, breeding, proper har- mony and superiority of points, and especially their anatomy. Unless the appointed judges are practically well acquainted with the breed of each animal submitt- ed to their .award, they aro incap- able of deciding aright. To obtain fair judgments as to the merits of animals, lot the society of each breed of animals appoint the judges. A man may be an excel- lent breeder and judge as to the points of a Shorthorn, but indiffer- ent as to a Hereford,Sussex,Devon, or Scotch Polled. Few, even of the bust and most experienced cattle breeders of one particular sort, are capable of judging cor- rectly as to all breeds of cattle. A butcher may pass upon the carcass of fatted cattle, for he has only one thing before him to de- cide upon, namely, the quality of the meat. But for animals to be slaughtered two classes of judges ought to be appointed to award two different kinds of prizes ; one for the animal alive, embracing its breeding, econcmy of growth and superiority of font), the other for the quality and due proportion of dressed meat to its live weight. 'Occasionally ono animal may be quite superior to another in living style, fine points, and harmony of form, yet inferior as to its flesh. Still this is not often the•case ; and in purchasing for slaughter it is usually better to choose animals that are the most perfect in living form rather than such as are in- different, at the same time avoid- ing those of too much floating fat under the -skin and those of blub- ber -like, appearance.—Amol•i:cah Agriculturist for January. • Pullman.,,Vestibuled Train It is universally conceded that, not- withstanding the advent of old and new lines into the, field of competition for passenger, traffic between Chicago, Mil- waukee, St. Paul and Minneapolis, the Chicago, • Milwaukee & St. Paul railway maintains its pre-eminent position as the leading line, and carries the greater portion of the business between these points. It is not hard to account for this, when we consider that it was the first in the field, and gained its popular- ity by long years of first-class service. It has kept up to the times by adopting all modern improvements in equipment and methods, the latest being complete PullmanVestibuledtrains running daily between Chicago,. Milwai kee, St. Paul and Minneapolis, and its route being along the banks of. the Mississippi, through the finest farming country, .the - most populous and prosperous towns and villages, it offers to its patrons the very' best service their mcney can •buy. Its dining cars are celebrated through- out the length and breadth 'of the land is being the finest in the world. Its sleeping cars are the best belonging to 'the Pull, man, company, being marvels of elegance, coinfort and luxury; .its day coaches are the best made, and its em- ployees, by 'long -continued service in their respective capacities, are experts, courteous end accommodating to all. It is not at all strange, therefore, that an 'intelligent and: discriminating tra- xelling public should almost exclusively patronize this .great railway, with its separate through lines running between Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Min- nespolie; Chicago, Council Bluffs and Omaha; Chicago, Kansas City, and St. Joseph, Mo. Ile afterwards died a natural death 'at Euphesus, in Asia. St. James the Great was beheaded at Jerus- alem. St. James the Less was thrown ,from a pinnacle or wing of the temple and then beaters to cleath with a fuller's club. Si. Philip was hanged up against a pillar atIlei apolis, a city of' Phry- gia. S. Barttholntnew was flayed alive by the command of a bar- barous king. St. Andrew wan 1 boon . to a 'cross, ' wises e Ise preached unto the people until he expired. St. 'Phomas was run through the body with a lance at Coromandel, in the East Ladies. St. Judo was shit to death with arrows. St. Simeon Zealot was crucified in Persia. Si. Matthias 13arnabas was stoned to death by the Jews at Salania. .St. Paul was beheaded at home by the tyrant Nero. CONSUMPTION CURED). Y. 1301.2.y.e,o.w. 44„,, i` Canada's (Eraatiyu \Viman this' t ortb Artier; Oita #,review ) So far as the .climate of Canada ir` concerned, it should never be forgotten that, within the parallels •of latitude which include the greater portions of d O P egg s.a d An b, o egos the Dominion, the eveopmeat in th United States has been the most marked Indeed, no development in the history of the world is more rapid thou th growth of the commerce of the grea lakes, which to day sot as a barrier, di- viding the two countries, but which under happier conditions, should be the bond that united them. Reference to the extent of this lake eommeree brings out another startling comparison which, creating surprise, shows after all how little the, aveaage man knows even of his own country, much less of the reg- ions alongside of his own land. This statement is, that the tonage and value of products which passed through the Sault Ste. Marie Canal, compassed with seven months of the seasozfof nav- igation of 1882, equalled that which passed through the Suez canal iu the entire year. Here, in the northern part of North America,•between two inland lakes, with only one shore of these de- veloped, a commerce has been created which equals that between two oceans, whose traffic is almost as old as the un- iverse,'and contributions to which are made from every clime and 2ountry of the globe. Recall, also, the fact that the water communication of the lakes is. competed with by the moat perfectly equipped railway system of the age, while the commerce of Suez ie. practi- cally without a competer. This devel- opment of the States and cities boreer- ing upon the great lakes, and thegrowth and productive forces which have been set in motion, not only on the shores of these inland seas, but on the wide stretches of country tributary to them, is a testimony to the advantages of a northern climate that it is impossible to ignore. So magnificent is this growth, so significant is the lesson that it teach- es, that, so fax as Canada and its clim- ate is conoerned, a true appreciation of her vast•value is, from the advantage of her location, at length beginning to dawn upon the minds of observent men. The place that she should ocoupy, as the greater and northern• half of the continent, can be no longer denied her - A proper estimate will show Canada to be a country having few equals in ex- tent, none in riches of resources, in ac- cessibility, ease of interior communica- tion, and notwithstanding the smile 'which lightens up the face of theread- er, none superior to herin•tlie advant- ages of climate. • A, N1W; HOME TTMENT;FOR'' THE[ CURE OE CA ,,RR C.AT. Nathan S. -Cleveland, 27 E.
