This is the Edison way!
The record of an artist's voice is not a Re -Creation
of that voice unless it will sustain this test:
The voice Re -Creation is placed on the New Edison,
The artist stands before the instrument and sings.
Suddenly, without warning, the artist ceases singing and
the New Edison takes up the song alone,
The Re -Creation of the artist's voice must be so perfect
that those who /isten, with closed eyes, cannot tell when
the artist has ceased to sing,.

and deliberately shot off the lobe of
the Iindiau's right ear, 'Still Joe re-
mained silent. Dant then drew few-
th t long -bladed hunting knife and,
with cruelty unbeiieveable, began
plunging it into the flesh of Ybarra's
faithful servant, and soon blood was
streaming from a score of wounds in
Joe's arms, legs, neck and chest .
When this failed to unseal his lips,
Drant ordered his nuns to build afire
beneath the feet of their *victim.
Joe by this time was almost be-
yond feeling and nothing that Shoe-
string could do now wquld add any
more, to his suffering, He was fast
slaking into unconsciousness from
loss of bleed.
Bat the malignant Drant was de-
termined and he personally applied
the torch to the pyre that was to
make Jee divulge his secret. The
latter had slipped into unconscious-
ness again, but Drant depended on
the fiae to bring him back to life and
confesion. The outlaw had just lift-
ed a burring brand and was letting
the flames ply on the sores of Joe's
feet when a bhot rang out, Startled
he swept the valley in a quick, all,
embracing look, then leaped to his
feet. He started to the trail, where
he: -had left a man on guard and his
other followed with him,leaving the
dying Yaqui alone.
Arriving en the trail, Drant and
his eompan.lon discovered their sea-
tiu.el in a death grip wait Gwyn. He
and Nan had descended into the can-
yon on its farthest side by means of a
rope which Gwyn took from a well
on the side of the trail. Tying one
end to the pommel of his saddle and
taking Nan's rifle he hail descended
to the bottom of the canyou and she,
refusing to be Ieft alone, had follow-
ed. They crossed the bed of the
canyon unobserved by Drant's sentry
and climbed up the other side of the
trait. GWY4 was almost upon, the
guard befoie the latter saw him and
fired. He Misses and. Gsvn leaped on
him, Nan then taking ft sheet cut to
the point where Joe had been left to

Drant and Ifs counpanion lost not
a moment in going to the rescue of
Gwvn's antagonist. Each tried to
bring their weapons into play, but

ed os rapidly they dared not take a
chance of killing their friend, The

When Gwyn and Nan reached the
dangling rope that had borne them
to the canyon bed, they were con-
fronted by the problem of getting
to the top again. Gwyn thought first
of climbing up himself andethen Pull-
ing Nan up, but the dtinger of batter-
ing her against the rocky walls of the
canyon caused him. to dismiss the plan.
Ile hatt a sudden inspiration. Tying
the rope securely about the middle of
Nan's rifle, he ordered her to sit on

the strain put fear into his horseand
the frightened, beast started on a mad

pulled Gwyn and Nan to the top or

When they reached the top, Gwyn
replaced the rope in the well and he
and Nan wont in search of. their
mounts. Only GWYll'S was to be found
and they realized how Drant had got
away. Lifting Nan into the saddle,
Gwyn then got on back of her and
they started for the hacienda.
Dusk was beginning to unfold its
thin, blue viel over the solemn peaks
of the Sierras. The shadowy out-
lines of the tree -tops stretching hazily
away over the mountains looked like
a thousand tombstones in the grow-
ing darkness. The thick silence a-
bout the little house that had been
Don Carlos' house seemed to emphas-
ize the vastness and solitude of the
hills. It was just fourteen hours .
From the windows of the hacienda
the low, flickering, nervous rays of
candle -light •cast their yellow bright-
ness into the darkness. Iusideeloung
ing comfortably in the living room,
were three men, conversing seriously
'in low, scarcely inaudible voices.
They were Karl Von Bleck, Shoestr-
Ing Drant and Cut -Deep Rawls. Von
Bleck was leaning forward in his
chair, a worried, unnatural expres-
sion on his countenance. Drant was
talking, and, as he spoke he mopped
the perspiration from his forehead
with a filthy handkerchief. It was
evident that he had entered but a
moment before, and his excitedtones
as words fairly tumbled from his lips
denoted that he was reporting news
of weighty importance. Drant's eyes
were fixed upon Von Bleck.
"Where's the Indian?" Von Bleck
fairly shouted. 'I don' care a hang
how long you fought, I want to know
where the Indian is. We didn't find
the chart here and he knows where
it is. That's all I care about. Where
is he?"
"Ile's dead:" Drant muttered curt-
ly.
Von Bleck sat mutely in his chair,
He said not a word while Drant made
the explanation, but his heavy brows
were drawn close together in a frown
that signified that he was anything
but pleased.
Suddenly, as Von Bleck was peer-
ing through the half light at his two
'companions the three wen started to
their feet with a jump. Outside in
the distance, could be plainly heard
hoof -beats of two horses. They were
aPProp, ohing the but at a gallop, but
they were still perhaps a quarter of a
mile away. Von Bleck and Drant
looked at each other; in the minds of
all was a singlo thought. ' Gwyn and
Nan were returniug, possibly with as:
sistance, to get the chart. It was int-
possibleto tell, from the sound of the
approaching horses, how many of
them there were. The three in the
cabin knew that they would be caught
if they did not act immediately. They
would have to think quick, and inovo
quicker. , Drant was the first to a-
waken to the situation. Ho ran into.
the kitchen and returnecl a momeht
later with e, can of kerosene oil. Von
Bleck watched him almost with dread
aa he poured the.fluid over the floor
and furniture, and then went into
an adjoining room to which the body
of Cordoba had been temoved, to
sprinkle the oil about hi there. His
motive was obvious—he intended to
burn the heciende, to the ground. Al -
tough Von Meek and Rawls knewthis
Snitch, they did not read all of Drant's
dastardly' thoughts. When he had
poured the kerosene profusely about
and emptied the tan, he lit it with a
candle Which had been serving as an
illumination. Then, with a wave of
hie hend he motioned towarda the
kitchen. Volt Bleck and Bessie fol-
lowed him out,
The hoof -heats by Ole time had
grown louder and more distinct. Just
as Drant drew the bolt of the dOor
that separated the living room from
the kitchen, they stopped suddenly,
an another moment the living roc=
door swung open and Gwyn rushed in,
'closely followed by Nan. Theravere
alone. A glance at the flames which
were now leaping high attd the odor
of the keroemie revealed the truth to
them immediately. GWyn, shouting
over his shoulder to Nan, rushed to-

had flown to the 'louse from Chihua-

heavy Smoke MIAMI by the burning
oil was filling the little living room.
They could feel it filling their throats
and lungs. Suddenly, Nan was rac-
ing frantically about the room beat-
ing the flames with a rug, and while
Gwyn was vainly attempting to bend
the window bars apart, the leering,
hard countenance of Von Bieck stared
at him from the outside. In the rak-

we'll Wit the door and be your friend
What do you say?"
"All 1 can say," replied Gwyn, "is
that if you want this map you'd bet-
ter find a more practical way to obtain
it. It is lix my pocket and it will stay
there—if it burns. And then It will
be more impossible for you to get it
then than. it ever was," He turned.
and left the. window.
Von Bleck'e face remained at the
window for perhapsa minute longer
and then disappeared . The agent of
the Central Powers realized that what
Gwyn had said was true. If he burn-
