We could list a dozen or more reasons why the price must be advanced, but will suffice it . to say that this is the first raise in subscription rates since 1952 1 1 Needless to say, our costs have soared far beyond the dollar and a half raise In rates. But we have endeavoured to keep our subscrip- tion as low as possible, 91 Years Young! Rev. Edward Feuglin conducted the ceremony and the couple were attended by the bride's brother and sister•In•law, Mr, and Mrs, Leland Stults, A wedding dinner followed the ceremony at the Carriage Inn where the newly, wed couple received the wedding guests, Mr. and .Mrs. Wheeler were in Blyth this week prior to leaving on a wedding trip to Vancouver and Alaska, They will maintain homes in both Blyth and Fort Wayne. Been Delayed The time that the first instal- ment of taxes will be paid in the village of Blyth is fast approach- ing and as yet tax notices have not been sent to local residents. Perhaps you were thinking that village authorities had forgotten the semi annual job of collecting operating expenses, but let us as• sure you this has not happened. The reason for the delay is simply the fact that the Huron County Board of Education has yet to set their rate, thereby snaking it rather difficult for loc- al authorities to set a rate of their own. Tax collector Irvine Wallace tells us that the normal deadline for payment of taxes is July 15th, but because of the delay this year this date will be advanced appropriately to coincide with the sending of bills. Stores Open Wednesday Due to the first of July holi- day falling on a Tuesday this year, Blyth stores will remain op- en for business all day Wednesday immediately following the holi- day. By Btil C.'. IT'S BEEN QUITE A MONTH Don't talk to me about a bear with a sore head. He'd back down the trail like a bunny if he met a teacher, in June, with a sore tooth. Right now I'm willing to take on anything, up to and induct- ing, a grizzly. June is the month in which nothing is so rare as a day, as cording to Browning, or somebody. And for school teachers, it's a month in which every day is a hard night's work. The teacher is plagued by paper work which could be done by a 15.year-old moron, an administration which is twice as stupid as he thought it was, and students who are bored from the belly- button ellybutton both ways — by school. Throw in a throbbing tooth and you've got yourself a mean critter. The month started off fittingly, with everybody forgetting my birthday, on the 2nd. The only card I received was from my insurance company, a card which annually infuriates me. Next day, one of those nicotine -tanned stumps which my dentist laughingly calls teeth began to kick up. And it's been kick. :ng up, down and sideways ever since. If 1 had any guts I'd tie a string around it, fasten the string to a doorknob and slam the door. However, I have about as many guts as I have teeth, so I go on trying to save this one. 1 can't even bite a marshmallow without going into orbit, so I've practically been on a liquid diel for weeks. This has its disadvantages. Which is worse every morning — a toothache or a hangover? And how would you like both? As is our custom, my wife and I went to the annual Lea• cock Medal Award Dinner recently. I've been a judge in the com- petition for several years and enjoy meeting a few big shots and finding their feet are made of the same type of clay as my own. Despite the snide comments of some writers from the big dailies, it's a good party in a good cause — keeping alive and fresh the works and memory of Canada's -- and one of the world's greatest comic writers. This year's winner was Stuart Trueman, whose book' "You're Only As Old As You Act," is good entertainment. Mr. Trueman, a Maritimer, was salty. The chairman, Richard Doyle, editor of the Globe and Mail, was even wittier, and should write a (took. The venerable, if not blessed, Barry Boyle, a witty writer and editor under his farm•boy facade, was there, and was witty. In fact, the whole thing was excruciateingly funny for many, painful for me. My wife galloped through a huge and excellent dinner, darting her eyes at my plate, where nothing was missing except a few of the inevitable green peas, which .1 had managed to mumble. Just as dinner began, I had a terrible attack of leaping bi• cuspid and couldn't cat a bite. I decided the only .thing to do was to paralyze the tooth, 'I tried but it refused ho play. MI 1 succeeded in doing was paralyzing the rest of me, meanwhile carrying on about my tooth (bravely, of course) to such an extent that my wife remarked later it was like having a cryine baby in Church. However, it all worked out fine, We went to a small gath- ering after the dinner, and incredible numbers of young, pretty college girls hovered about me, fetching me aspirin, gin and other medications. Meanwhile, my old lady spent an hour or so straightening out the editor of the 'Globe and Mail, 1 fully expected to find this column on the front page on Monday morning.' But there it was, the same old Globe melange of world crises and murders and stale speeches of Cabinet Ministers. Not content with my physical suffering, young Kim bit mo in June with another wallop, She wanted a loan toward an electric piano. After a sufflicent number of things, like "Fie on thee, wench!" and "You're going to have to pay interest, you know," I buckled, and am now subsidizing one of those rotten groups to the tune of $200. All that was needed to make it a ring•dinger of a month were the 'headlines about electricians getting $6.50 an hour, and the interest rates 'soaring daily. Psalm 84:11 One of the reasons some people give for not wishing to become a Christian is that they want to have a good time. Some- where they have gotten the notion that being a Christian means enduring a joyless, sombre existence. They think that if God is allowed to have His way with thein He will rob them of everything that is pleasant and make them downright miserable. While it is true that a Christian does not live primarily for this world but rather for that which is to come, it is also true that there is no one so genuinely happy or deeply saisfied as the tndi• '. idual who is walking inobedience to the will of God. And this is not strange, for as Christ invades our personality He gives life and ;rives it more abundantly. In exchange for our burden of guilt He gives a cleansed conscience and a knowledge of pardon and peace with God; for our Inadequacies He gives His power so that we are rqual to each day for our turmoil and anxiety Ile gives calmness and a tranquil state of mind; for our fears He gives the assurance of His Presence throughout all our earthly sojourn; for our foolish- ness and perplexity Ile gives His wisdom; and in exchange for our miserable unhappiness He gives a joy unfathomable, On the other hand, the person who seeks his pleasure in the gaiety of this world finds himself in a treadmill — always seek- ing and never quite finding satisfaction. To him, happiness is just ahead in the next round of pleasure. And when the next round comes, it is as all before, a disappointment. Very often the pleas - tires most coveted. when received bring only bitterness and frus- tration. "0 taste and see that the Lord is good." There is no un. i'erstanding of the joy of the Lord apart from actually experiettl- cing it. But to him who longs for it the gracious invitation goes nut, "Let him that is athirst come.
