Tho School was founded In 1841, and, therefore. while asserting it right to he considered one at the best, may also claim to be one of the oldest ih the Province. From 1814 to 1868 it was under the charge of John Haldane, Esq., a gentleman of culture and talents. who is still enjoying a hale old age in retire- ment In Toronto, and occasionally revisits the scone of his former labors. Then for three years -it was conducted by Mr. James Prestop, B. A., whose early de Atli was a distinct loss to the teaching profession. The present principal, M. Strang, entered on his duties in October, 1871, and though he has spent over a quarter of a century of the best part of his life. with hardly the loss of a day at his post, he seeme to have vigor and enthusiasm enough, if spared, to carry hero successfully through another decade. With regard to the qualifications of these teachers and the tone of the school we tiny say that at his Inst visit in June. 1808, the High School Inspector grad(d the teaching No. 1 in every subject. and added in his general remarks ; "It affords me pleasure to he in a position to report of this Institute that it continuer to maintain its charactert,tically high standing of scholarship and enthusiasm on the part of its staff', and of diligence and appreciation ou the part of its pupils.” The members of the Hoard are F.
