Pawnshop Emblem Taken From the Dukes of Medici. The origin of the pawnbroker's sign, the three golden balls, is accounted for by humor. legend and fact, Some early English writ said the chances were two to one that the articles pledged would never be redeemed. On the other hand, they are ascribed to the good St. Nich- olas, A nobleman, so the story gdes, sud- denly becoming poor, found himself un- able to provide for the marriage of his three daughters, The news of his sad plight came to the ears of the saintly bishop, who immediately came to i.11e res- cue by placing three bags of gold in the nobleman's window at night, each bag containing 0 Sufficient dowry for one maiden. The three parses necordingly became the emblem of St, Nicholas, and when the hankers of northern Italy took up the business of lending money they appropriated it, considering themselves goad followers of the generous saint, The fact, however. weals to be that the three halls were taken from the lov- er part of the coat of arms of the Dukes of .11idici, from whose dominions the first money lenders emigrated to Eng- land, This explains why some of the an - dent pawnbrokers need fire blue balls, for the coat of arms in heraldic language is described as five bczants azure.
