MOBILEHOME BENEFITS
no one is more familiar
e mobilehome industry
SASS Canada than Greg Lund,
manager of General Coach
Mgk,$ who discusses the industry
a whole and General Coach
ocularly in an interview with
anadian Mobile Home.
"On looking back, we felt a great
tat of resistance to mobilehome
living in Canada during 1953 and
Canadians who could have
benefitted by living in mobilehomes
were slow to accept this new kind
of housing." Lund says.
"One important hurdle was
jumped in 1955 when millions of
dollars were made available by
finance companies to the purchas-
er& of ,mobilehomes for installment
buying- At the same time the in-
•stal.lment terms were lengthened
from four to five years."
'As sales manager for General
Coach, Lund has travelled the
length and breadth of Canada. He
has found that many people were
sceptical about mobilehomes being
warm and comfortable in winter.
Evidently they had heard. about
some of the American units which
were built for southern climates
and were not insulated for north-
ern winters.
"General 'Coach now has more
than 1.000 mobilehomes located
across Canada, .some of them as
far north as Churchill, Manitoba.
As far as we know, there are no
heating problems in mobilehomes
being built by reputable manu-
facturers today."
'According tp General Coach
records. people in all walks of life
are living in mobi)ehomes in Can-
ada. The largest percentages are
owned by military and construction
families. -
"The RCAF. is beginning to
build modern mobilehome parks
at their stations, and we feel that
• it will be possible in the near future
for an Airman to go from station to
station in Canada and find good
' parking facilities-"
'According to Lund, mobilehome
manufacturers have helped the
Canadian Government save mill-
ions of dollars by substituting
mobilehomes for permanent mar-
ried quarters. Married quarters
are constructed at a cost of S12.000
to $15.000 pen unit and cannot be
rented economically. Mobilehomes
are pureha-sed by servie-emen•
t:.ems'elves and represent no -eap-
:tal expenditure by the Govern-
ment Additional dollars can be
saved in the transfer of armed
service personnel from one station
' to another. The cost of moving a
' mobilehome with contents is only
a fraction of the cost of transferring
a man from house to house.
Lund predicts that modern
mobilehome parks will be develop-
ed at a more rapid rate in future.
He points out that one park opened
by Midwest Trailer Sales at a cost
of more than $185.000 in Edmonton
last year is now completely, oc-
cupied.
Two other modern parks opened
recently were Marlin Centre Mobile
Home Park, Windsor. and Ted's
Mobile Home Garden. North Bay.
-General Coach's expansion is
based on the confidence that our
dealers from coast to coast have
in the industry." Lund says

BEEF CATTLE PRODUCERS INDICATE
CONFIDENCE IN FUTURE
R K. Bennett. Chief of Livestock
Marketing for Canada. gave add-
ed confidence to beef cattle pro-
ducers in his address to the an-
nual meeting of the Ontario Beef
Cattle Producers' Association, held
in Toronto recently.
Mr. Bennett analyzed what has
and is taking place in the U.SA.
and Canada in the prst few years.
He stated that there were strong
indications that beef cattle pro-
ducers should look to the future
with confidence We have reach-
ed the high point of the cycle in
beef cattle production without the
usual severe drop in prices. In-
formation available would indi-
cate that prices should show
strength and possibly small gains
before the end of 1956. and gains
in 1957 and 1958.
Human population increase is.
exceeding cattle population in-
crease; employment is at a high
level and the per capita consump-
tion of beef is increasing. Mr.
Bennett stressed very strongly
that producers should pay very
close attention ' to economy of
production. as therein could lay a
good margin of profit.
President Harold Huffman, in
his annual report,. said it was hop-
ed that the deduction and promo-
tion plan would soon be in opera-
tion Under the plan it is propos-
ed to deduct 10 cents per head on
cattle and 5 cents per head on
calves. delivered to, packers and
public stockyards for slaughter,
from shipping points within On-
tario. Most of this money will be
used to promote the greater use
of beef and beef products. A small
portion of it will be used to „fin-
ance the association. The annual
meeting almost unanimously re -
endorsed this plan. which was or-
iginally passed at the 1955 annual
meeting. -
