The need for m

the organization meeting that the
survey depends on its success,
largely upon adequate publicity
and personal canvass. For this
reason, the general survey's com-

Of the county s, population of 50,-
000, there are 38,000 eligible for
X-rays.
Director of 'the Huron County
,klealth Unit, Dr. It...M. Aldis, of
Goderich, '•medical advisor for the
survey, said TB i8 a community

tion is the sparkplug of TB con-
trol in Huron County. •
Others who •spoke were William
• Kennedy, Ontario Department of
Health; F. A. `Madill, Wingham,
president of the County TB Assoc
iation; -.Mrs. Edith' Russell, Sea -
forth, secretary; W. • P. Roberts,
Seaforth;' Elmer Bell, Exeter; the
Rev. Glen .Eagle, Clinton,. and the
Rev. Alex Nimmo, Wingham.
The main con;zrnittees have al-
ready been established, but Edwin
P. Chesney, Tuckersmith, chair-
man of the canvass, points out
that hundreds• of • workers are
needed to make *sure that every
home in the county is reminded
of the coming survey so that all
members will know when • and
where to go to • have their chests
X-rayed.
The reason for taking such trou-
ble and setting up such a vast
organization is that health officials
feel that the survey will only be
effective • if everybody presents
himself at the mobile clinics in
May. ^Because" tt it an u _

Yeats. ago this fact was recog-
nized as applied tQ cattle ant com-
pulsory TB testing was instituted.
While the. test is not compulsory
for human beings, it is clearly as
important that the disease be con-
trolled • in men and women as in
cattle.
For thisreason, every effort is'
being put forth to make the survey
a complete, success. It is planned
within the next three weeks to try
to recruit the necessary five thou-
sand workers, and to this end com-
mittee members are already go-
ing through thecounty askjpg, for
volunteers.
If Huron is to show the yvay and
chalk up the first all-out chest
survey in a rural area, these
workers are essential.

HYDRO
1956
5OYEARS OF PROGRESS
THE HYDRO
The fifty years since Ontario Hydro was
created in 1906 constitute one of the most
important eras in the history of our pro-
vince. The Hydro family has played a major
role in the progress of that half century,
energetically developing Ontario's water
resources to make available to farms,,homes
and industry, dependable electric power at
rates amoiig the lowest in the world.
In the process, the Hydro family has grown
from the original 14 partner municipalities
to 343. The rrtimber df customers served
through these, plus rural, local systems and
industrial customers now exceeds one and
one half million. The combined assets of the
Commission and the municipal systems is
almost two billion dollars.
In this, our Golden Jubilee Year, Ontario
Hydro and all the Hydro municipalities
salute the men whose foresight and enter-
prise founded the Hydro family . . . We
salute also labour, industry and agriculture,
all of which may be proud of their part in
helping to bring about the present high
standard of living in Ontario.
What of the next SO years? The future holds
great promise in electricaLliving. Hydro will
continue to provide an adequate supply of
electricity to meet the power requirements
of the province . . . power for greater
prosperity for all Ontario.

It was announced this week that
the annual meeting of the Seaforth
Community' Credit Union Limited
will be held Tuesday, February
14, at '8 p.m., in the Town Hall,
Seaforth. All interested and pres-
ent members are cordially invited
to attend this meeting.
More snow was added during the
middle of last week which made
travelling heavy in some places
However, the weekend, especially
Sunday, it turned quite mild and
partly melted the recent fall. Some
streets in town were very slushy
by late Sunday afternoon.
$ $
Speaking of snow and ice brings
to mind something we saw in a
paper the other day. It appears to
be the trend these past few years
whereby young couples after be-
ing married, both • start to work
again. They settle in a small
apartment. Hubby goes to work
earlier than the wife, but they
both come home at noon. There is
a rush to get a meal ready in or-
der to be back on time for work
Sliced bread is tied; canned meat;
peas or some other canned vege-
table; instant coffee, etc. And so
the husband no longer can come
home and say to the wife: "What's
cooking?" but asks instead:
"What's thawing?"
$ $
No doubt many are glad that
the deadline for 1956 license plates
has been extended' to February 29.
Take, for instance. myself. I still
feel the pinch after a hectic Christ-
mas!

Are they on the right track?
The enormous toll of deaths due
to car accidents has resulted in
the Ontario Federation of Agricul
ture, endorsed 'by the Ontario
Provincial Government, declaring
the week of February 20 to Febru
ary 25, "Rural Safe Driving Week."
From observations of news items
items during the past year, I would
like to see such a week held latex
in the year, and have the slogan
read: "Rural Safe Tractor Driv

A new safety regulation is now
in effect as of February 1. All car
and truck drivers are compelled
to come to a complete stop behind
a school bus, and must wait until
the bus proceeds or the driver sig-
nals for you to pass. This added
safety measure is expected to
eliminate many accidents to school
'children who use the bus daily as
a means of attending school cen-

effect in the States for some time.

Teaches Judo To Girls
An ex -British Commando, who
used judo to escape from con-
centration camp twice during
World War `II, plans to teach the
art to girls and young women in
this district so they can protect
themselves against attackers. John
Rylko, 39, a husky sculptor, who
fought Hitler's forces in Poland,
the Middle East and Italy, has an-
nounced that he will start the
classes next week. I've had a lot
of requests from girls and young
women who want to know how to
handle these sex fiends we read
about in the papers," he says. "If
a girl knows judo, she can throw
a man with little effort or can
easily make him release his grip."
