The chapel of St. George's An-
glican Church, Oshawa, was the
scene when Rev. C. D. Cross unit-
ed in marriage Dr. Sylvia Patricia
Shields, daughter of Mrs. Shields
and the late Thomas Shields, and
Dr. Carl Moran Elliott, son of Mr.
and Mrs. W. Earle Elliott, Toron-
to. Given in marriage by Dr.
Douglas Best, Hamilton, the bride
wore a gown of sunset pink crys-
talette and a corsage of pink ros-
es. Her headdress was a feather
bandeau of matching pink. Mrs.
Jack McLean, St. Catharines, ma-
tron of honor for her sister, wore
a rose gown with deep red corsage.
Harold Elliott, Toronto, was best
man for his brother. Following a
reception at Adelaide house, the
couple left on a wedding trip to
Bermuda and New York.

The Public School and Sunday
School are holding their Christmas
entertainment on Friday night,
Dec. 16, in the schoolhouse. A good
program is being provided.
Mr. Murray Dale has been trans-
ferred from Weston to Clarkson.
He will be on the London to Sarnia
line.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lawson were
in London Thursday, guests of
their daughter, Mrs. E. F. Warren
and Mr. Warren. Mrs. Lawson re-
mained for a short visit, returning
to her home on Sunday.

C.W.L. Meets
The December meeting of the
Dublin Subdivision of the Catholic
Women's League was held Wednes-
day evening
at 9 p.m., in the Con-
tinuation. School. Thirty members
were in attendance. The president
Mrs. Healy. opened the meeting
with prayer. Miss Margaret Flan-
agan, secretary, read the minutes
of the previous meeting. Mrs.
Looby gave the treasurer's report.
No correspondence had been re-
ceived since the previous meet-
ing. Mrs. Looby and Mrs. Healy
attended the Deanery meeting,
held at St. Marys in November.
Mrs. Looby gave the report on
the meeting. Arrangements are
completed for the bingo to be held
in the parish hall in December.

Boxes of treats will be sent to
the sick and shut-ins for Christ-
mas. Three parcels of used cloth-
ing have been packed. Mrs. Jack
Meagher will take charge of the
collection for used stamps. Mrs.
Healy introduced the guest speak-
er, Mrs. Joseph McConnell, Sea -
forth, who gave a very interesting
talk on the different conventions
which she had attended during the
year. Mrs. Fergus Kelly tendered
a vote of thanks to Mrs. McCon-
nell, and Mrs. Meagher presented
her with a gift. Lunch was served
by the committee in charge, and
the meeting adjourned.

ris Township, is confined to his
home after having suffered a slight
stroke while getting ready for
church on Sunday.

S.D.H.S. Graduate
Wins Scholarship
James I. McIntosh, son of Mr.
and Mrs. James McIntosh, R.R. 3,
Seaforth, '1 uckersmith Township,
and a 1955 graduate of Seaforth
District High School, has been
awarded an Ontario Department
of Agriculture, Huron County,
scholarship valued at $100. The
award is granted annually to a
student who has attained a high
graduation standing from high
school and who is enrolled in a
degree course at the Ontario Agri-
cultural College, Guelph.
Brother Killed in
Goderich Crash
Three Goderich youths, including
the brother of a Seaforth resident,
were fatally injured, and two oth-
ers injured when the car in which
they were driving, crashed a
cement abutment at Saltford Tues-
day night.
Included among those fatally in-
jured was William Garrick, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Garrick, Gode-
rich, and a brother of Mrs. Ken
Swan, of Seaforth.
Flag Ceremony At
Legion. Auxiliary
A feature of the recent meeting
of the Legion Ladies' Auxiliary
was the ceremony of dedicating
the flags. Rev. J. H. James, Legion
padre, spoke to the group and dis-
cussed the flags and their mean-
ing.
Following contests a Christmas
party was enjoyed and lunch was
served. The birthday prize was
won by Mrs. Gordon and the
mystery prize by Mrs. J. Mc-
Gregor. Mrs. J. Barry won the
prize for having the most grand-
children.
THRIFTY KIPPENETTES.
The second meeting of the Thrif-
ty Kippenettes was held at the
home of Mrs. Caldwell, the assist-
ant leader. The meeting opened
with the singing of "The More We
Get Together," and repeating the
4-H Pledge. Sixteen members an-
swered the roll call, which was Ole
showing of material. Different
styles of clothes were demonstrat-
ed on different types of models.
The leaders told about clothes that
suit and'clothes that do not. The
girls were told some more about
the blouses they are to make.
Fill Vacancy On'
Hensall Council
Hensall village' council positions
have been filled following a spe-
cial nomination meeting held Fri-
day evening. Elected by acclama-
tion to the fourth and final vacant
council seat was James R. Sang-
ster.
The second nomination became
necessary when only three of five
council nominees qualified after
the November 25th nominations.
Council now includes: Reeve
William Parke. and Councillors
Lorne Luker, Harry Hoy and Nor-
man Jones.

On Friday evening of last week
the directors of Stanley Federa-
tion and their wives met at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Mc -
Beath for a social evening.
At the banquet held at Zurich
some weeks ago, Mr. McBeath was
elected the new president. Elmer
Hayter, of Varna, is vice-president.
Anson McKinley, the retiring presi-
dent, and his wife were presented
with a gift. Crokinole was played
by all, and the winners were: Mrs.
Harvey Hayter, Varna; Geo. Reid,
Varna; Gordon Johnson, Parr Line;
Elgin Porter, Bayfield.
A delicious lunch was later serv-
ed by the hostess.

Winthrop Feature
The Winthrop Young People's
Union held their regular meeting
in Cavan Church, on Sunday eve-
ning. The meeting was opened
with everyone repeating the Young.
People's Purpose and singing,
"Hark! The Herald Angels Sing."
A letter was read from Miss Grace
Barja, missionary on furlough, ex-
pressing her thanks to the young
people for the donation given her.
Plans were made for the annual
meeting which will be held in Cav-
an Church on Tuesday, Dec. 27,
and will take the form of a pot-
luck supper.
"While Shepherds Watched
Their Flocks By Night" was sung.
The scripture lesson was read by
Murray Dennis, and Mr. Holden
led in prayer. The topic was tak-
e'n by Audrey Godkin. -A film
script, "Holy Night," was shown
by Mr. Holden and Art Bolton.
Carols were sung and the benedic-
tion repeated.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bolton were
presented with a gift on behalf of
the Young People, and lunch was
servid. The meeting closed with
the singing of "Taps."
OBITUARIES
WILLIAM JOHN HACKWELL
William John Hackwell passed
away at his late residence in Rose -
town, Sask., on November 14. 1955,
aged 85 years. The deceased was
born in Mcillop Township. He
spent the early part of his life
there. In 1900 he was married to
Nellie J. Copeland, Palmerston,
Ont. They settled in Stratford,
where he railroaded for 15 years.
In April, 1918. he moved his fam-
ily west to Madison, Sask., where
he farmed until 1926. when he
moved to Rosetown. He was em-
ployed with the Colwell Lumber
Co., and the B.A. Oil Co. He re-
tired in 1951.
He is survived by his wife, three
daughters, Isobel. Edmonton; Mrs
Ethel Turley, Rosetown; Mrs.
Johnny (Winnifred) Franklin. Rose -
town. Sask Two daughters pre-
deceased him, Laura. 1910. and
Myrtle, Mrs. Hugh Stewart. Madi-
son, Sask., in April, 1955. • Six
grandchildren, one 'great-grandson.
three sisters and three brothers
also survive: Mrs. Mary Gardiner,
Toronto; Mrs. John (Isabel) Buch-
anan, Stratford; Mrs. Emily Nay-
lor, Rochester. N.Y., and Joseph.
Thomas and Wesley, all of Walton.
Funeral service took place in
the United Church. Rosetown, on
November 18. Interment was made
in Roselawn Perpetual Care Ceme-
tery.

Miss Laura McMillan, of Toronto,

mother, Mrs. W. F. McMillan, who
is in hospital in London.

nia Observer, visited in Varna and
Seaforth on Saturday.

left last week for Mrs. DePape's
home in Vancouver to spend

recently returned after a two-year

in Toronto this week attending the
annual meeting of Ontario Co-op-
eratives.
LADIES' GUILD MEETS
The regular meeting of the Lad-
ies' Guild of St. Thomas' Anglican
Church was held on Tuesday af-
ternoon in the parish hall. Miss D.
Parke presided and the meeting
opened with the scripture reading
by Miss M. Galbraith. Prayers for
the parish were followed by the
Lord's Prayer in unison. Follow-
ing the roll call, the minutes and
treasurer's report were read and
adopted. Previous to the business
discussion, 'the president thanked
all members for their splendid co-
operation at the bazaar and tea.
After the collection was received
and dedicated, Mr. James adjourn-
ed the meeting with the benedic-
tion.

Mr. and Mrs. John F. Murphy,
Dublin, wish' to announce the en-
gagement of their oldest daughter,
Mary Loretta, to Mr. John Ivan
Krpan, son of Mr. and Mrs.
