A. `Rube' Hornstein of the Dominion Public Weath- er Office, Halifax, on the CBC program "Ask the Weather- man.") False?vi Bunions, aching backs, corns and broken bones have long been the stock in trade of many amateur weather forecas- ters. The most amazing fact in this connection is that I've sel- dom come across the person who claims to be an expert pf this kind. Usually after an af- ter-dinner talk, I'll have some- one inform me very confiden- tially' that his wife can always, foretell the weather by her pet corn much more accurately than my scientific weather fore- casters can through the use of their weather charts; or, in the case of a lady heckler, she'll tell me of the amazing personal n IN True or forecasting' success which her old maiden aunt has achieved through the aches attendant on her long-standing case of rheu- matism. Only rarely do I come upon someone• who is eager to admit to the possession of the necessary ailments. Yet there are many scientists who flatly refuse to ridicule this aid to amateur forecasting. There seems to be .fairly good evi- dence that scar tissue and cer- tain joints of • the body may be affected by the rapid changes which take place in certain cli- matic elements preceding a storm. Pet bunions may there- fore be fair forecasters, even T Y -,••ti. r de( ..ii ( d .•iii .rT' reee• .9 ..ir ..7i rT..N -T- iT 7.•?•r FT''t 'T.ri er- er-,4 .. nY {-rid S t .rN I • •rf 1r; : • :.. that are practical Handsome Table Lamps In a variety of styles and colors. It must, furthermore, be kept in mind that physiological reac- tions by either human beings or animals are poor long-range weather forecasters. They're useful only in telling something about what weather is already at hand. If squirrels are seen gathering an unusually large number of nuts in the autumn, a hard winter is not necessarily in prospect despite the oft -re- peated superstition to this ef- fect. It means simply that the nut crop has peen good, no doubt because of favorable wea- ther during the nut -growing season. In like manner, the most re- cent honored prophet the wool- ly bear caterpillar, is a fraud and a deceiver. This woolly the passage of the shower or the that the width of the dark band in the larva's coat foretells the severity of the coming winter, but this is pure poppycock. Co- incidence may make the woolly bears look good in some years, but they don't hold up in the long haul. The thickness of the fur on your cat, dog, horse and cow, or the rabbits, squirrels and deer you have shot, indicate nothing whatsoever concerning the rug- gedness • of the coming yvinter. Tricky human memory re- calls only what it wants to re- member. If the winter has been particularly severe with one blizzard heaping its snow upon the last, we're apt to re- call, "Yes, I said it'd be a hard winter when I saw the bees building their hives high." But should the winter prove to be mild, your statement is better forgotten. Turning to quite a different type of adage, the one that fine weather can be expected during a rain when "there's enough blue in the sky to make a pair of Dutchman's breeches" TB generally true. The reason for this runs along the following lines: the major storm systems that bring rain or snow cause many layers of clouds to 'form near the earth up to six or eight miles above our planet . For this reason, if a hole in the lower cloud appears, only more clouds can be seen above. If, however, the storm is moving away, or if the rain is from lo-. cal shower activity, a hole in the lower clouds, from which the rain is falling, will reveal the blue sky above, heralding hte passage of the shower or the end of the storm. Many times, too, I've heard ladies say that rain is brewing because of the 'increasing curli- ness of their hair. That's •a pretty good sign. Curls grow curlier and more unruly be- cause as a storm approaches the. air becomes more and more humid, affecting the hair like a damp comb being run through it. Not only does curly hair be- come curlier, but doors and windows are more likely to stick, table salt is more inclin- ed to pack, and a handful of other household annoyances oc- cur. From what I've just said, then, it can be seen that most weather proverbs or supersti- tions fall into one of two cate- gories. First, there are the ad- ages based on nature -plants and animals -which should be viewed with the greatest cau- tion, if not entirely ignored. Second, there are the predic- tions relating to winds, clouds, increasing moisture content of the atmosphere or the general appearance of the air or sky. Amateur weather -casters may rely on these signs up to a point since they've been found to be, generally reliable for the section of the world in which they ,.originated.
