Son of God, love's pure light, Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth. Silent night, Holy night! Shepherds• quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heav'nly hosts sing Alleluia, Christ, the Saviour, is born, Christ, the Saviour, is born. THE FIRST NOWELL The first Nowell the angel did say, Was tocertain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keep- ing their sheep, On a cold Winter's night that was so deep. Nowell, nowell, nowell, nowell! Born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east, beyond them afar, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Nowell, nowell, nowell, nowell! Born is the King of Israel. This star, drew nigh to the northwest, O'er Bethlehem it took its rest, And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay. Nowell, nowell, nowell, nowell! Born is the King of Israel. - GOOD KING WENCESLAS Good King Wenceslas look'd out On the Feast of Stephen, When the snow lay round about Deep, and crisp, and even: Brightly shone the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in sight, Gath'ring Winter fuel. "Hither, page, and stand by me, If thou know'st it, telling, Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?" "Sire, he lives a good league hence, Underneath the mountain; Right against the forest fence, By Saint Agnes' fountain." AWAY IN TH EMANGER A'Vay in the manger, No crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus Laid down His sweet head. The stars in the bright sky Looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus Asleep in the hay. The cattle are lowing, The Baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus No crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus; Look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle 'Til morning is nigh. Is There a Santa Claus? Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the scepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect an ant, in his intellest, as compared with the boundless worlds about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no ro- mance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, excp,t in sense and sight. 'The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would - be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in theworld are those that neither children nor .men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders that are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but theta is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain, and vie wand picture the si,pernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. • This editroial, which has justly become timeless, was written in the New York Sun in 1897 by Francis Pharcellus Church in answer to a letter from a little eight-year-old girl named Virginia O'Hanlon, who had been told by some of her friends that there was no Santa Claus.
