MAKE MORE JOBS •
We continue to have questions ask-
ed as to why immigrants who are
-permitted to come to Canada are
able to get jobs.
One of the answers is that given
'by Mr., John D. Sharp, an official of
the Immigration Department, when
he addressed the Niagara Fails
Chamber of Commea'ce.
Mr. Sharp pointed out about 38 per
cent of our, postwar immigrants have
bought cars, that about 40 per cent
own their own homes, _and that more
than 40 per cent have household ap-
pliances, such as refrigerator.%
Basing its arguments on the fig-
'• lures provided by Mr. Sharp, the Ot-
tawa Journal has this to 'say:
"Now if 38 per cent of the one mil-
lion immigrants Canada has taken in
since the war bought motor cars the
purchases add up to 380,000—about
once -fifth of all the cars we have pro-
duced in that, period. And' if 40 per
.,cent of. them . bought houses and re-
frigerators, then ,the buying of all
these houses and cars -must have
made a lot of extra Ork for a lot
-of Canadians."
I That, of course, is the truth. New
Canadians do not take away jobs-,
they make more jobs as they house,
feed and satisfy the other require-
ments of their families.
To place the flow of New Cana-
dians into Canada in the proper •pro-
spective, the Winnipeg Free Press
,comments thus: . .
, "It must be kept in mind, howev-
er, that even at 165,000 the present
inflow of popul'atio'n is only a trickle
)compared with past periods of, large
immigration. The total of 165,000
must be measured against our total
population of 15,000,000 and our to-
tal labor force of more than 5,000, -
ON' Moreover the loss of population
by emigration would have to be de-
ducted.
'In contrast this country brought
in 400,870 immigrants in .a single
year before the First' World War '
when -our total poptilation was but
7,632,000 and our total labor force
vas about half as large as today. A
comparable immigration figure for
today •would .be 800,000rattler than
155,000. Indeed, the total of 165,000
is only a little better than half of our
natural increase.- '
PLEASURE UNLIMITED
- We don't know how many in this
district enjoy fishing and hunting.
BIut from the number of people who
have told us of particularly thrilling
incidents during an afternoon of
fishing or hunting, u e ' think the per-
centage is quite high,
If we are correct in our assump-
tion that a large proportion of peo-
ple inthe district are int6rested in
' these sports, then it only indicates
that people here are , the sami as
people elsewhere in Ontario
