Who: iu the head of the bouelp?
'Wha is it, when you really,,• get
dowwt tp it 'v iko roue thiud ; around
your roost?.
I eu pode 4t. depends on wiloitt
yen talk to. Ask old hair on Ida
chest—ifather, that is—and he'll tali
you thea around ho}mme_ he rules; with
an iron hand and no doubt about it,
Ask Mother and you won'tget such
a direct answer. She'll smile, may-
be point to her sponse with: a look
which means !'he thinks he is, hut
I manage to get my way," This, of
course, is 'a delusion which both
parents suffer most of the time.
From the time the little seven
or eight -pound wonder gets slapped
on the back and utters his first
squeal, right there ,you have the
character who will dominate the
entire household until his childhood
is over.
You don't think so? Just cast
your mind back over the years and
perhaps you remember a few inci-
deets, Just recall who it was who
made you change your habits so
you got up at the crack of dawn
every morning to warm up the for-
mula. 'Who was It who dragged
you out every Sunday afternoon to
go for a swim in Lake Huron?
Think of all the hours you have
spent reading aloud from story
books when if there is one thing
you hate it is reading to somebody
else. And who was it who made
mother smarten up and use a little
more nail polish and lipstick? And
got father to wear a horrible, neck-
tie which, otherwise, he wouldn't
use to polish his boots?
Oh, you know the answer all
right. It wasn't father, or it wasn't
mother. It was the real household
dictators the children.
Sometimes this can be a terrible
nuisance. As the years slip by
there is some latent force in the
human personality which resists
'change ..with increasing strength.
If it wets not for the young ones
growing up around us, we would
be old spoil -sports and sticks -in the -
mud long before our time, In the
old days when the awful rule —
"Children should be seen and not
heard"—was strictly enforced, wo-
men donned the black cap of old
age when they were fifty. Every-
body was old before his time. To-
day—well, just take a look at
grandma's new slacks or bathing
suit and you'll see what I mean.
It works on a more serious level
too. Not so long ago I read about
a group of parents from California
who had come all the way up to St.
Thomas to look at the city and get
to know its people. Do you think
for a moment that these Americans
would have bestirred themselges to
make the long trip all by •hem -
selves, no matter how neighborly

Witty Poem Enjoyed
At Surprise Party
For Local Couple
The following poem, written by
John Beattie, was read at the sur-
prise party last week for Mr. and
Mrs. M: McKellar, town, who cele-
brated their 40th wedding annivers-
ary.
Forty years is quite ,a chapter,
Page on,page and line on line;
Glad we are again to greet you,
As in days of Auld Lang Syne.
So we bring congratulations
On this twenty-fifth of June;
Well we know you both remember
When you first began to "spoon."
Lovers' dreams are surely some-
thing—
All of that for Mac and Lil,
As they waited, tensely waited,
For those magic words, "I will."
The years have made but little
change;
You still are hale and hearty;
We come to you, we hope, we pray,
You'll live another forty.
Malcolm, you've served the public
With express and telegraphing,
And for good measure you threw in
A lot of, hearty laughing.
So keep right on, you good, good,
friends,
We could not do without you;
The Church, the School, the Choir,
the Street,
Are all real proud about you.
Yesterday a little birdie
Tipped us off about tonight;
So we bring congratulations:
Joe and Jack and Billy Wright.
