The minister scored the "glib-
ness' of Communist writers in a
warning tobeware of some of the
eloquent writers whose works are
now found on bookstalls. "If you
read the work of some of the ex
Communists," said Mr. Porter,
"you will (find they can be just as
eloquent in their condemnation of
Communism." He suggested varie-
ty in reading and the cultivation
of a lively curiosity as an aid to
education when he further discuss-
ed writers of the past. and the pre-
sent.
Mr. Porter was introduced by T.
Pryde, Exeter, M.L.A. for -Huron,
and thanked by Frank Sills, Reeve
of Seaforth.
The financial statement of the
County Library, as read by Mr.
Erskine. showed receipts at. $16,-
499.40, as against disburbements of
$15,719.13, and accounts outstand-
ing, $403.37, leaving a debit bal-
ance of $23.10. The librarian's re-
port, covering activities in 1949,
showed a total circulation of 80,-
718, an increase over 1948 of 24,980
books. Membership consists of 35
libraries, seven deposit stations, 17
individual schools, 12 township
school areas and two high schools,

tion to fill the board seat vacated
by W. A. Galbraith, clerk and

A meeting of the Tuckersmith Township School
Area No. 1 Board of Trustees and Ratepayers of
S.S. 5, Tuckersmith, will be held on Friday, the
19th day of May, 1950, in No. 5 School, at 8:30
p.m. (D.S.T.).
The purpose of this meeting is to consider the high per pupil
cost of operation owing to the email .number of p`apils now resi-
dent in the Section, and whether the School should reopen for

Sperling, Of St.'Marys, formerly of
west China. She. chose as her sub-
ject, "Adventure Ingenuity," end
told of her worn on the •mission
deldel in a very interestingman-
ner. While here she was the guest
of Rev. and Mrs. Stanway.
Don't forget the .baking sale and
afternoon tea in the church school
room on Saturday afternoon. Mrs.
T. Baird's group is in charge.
The W.A. of Brucefield United
Church met in the Sunday school-
room on T(leeday afternoon. 'Mrs.
Walter Moffat, 1st vice-president,
presided. Scripture reading and
prayer were taken by Miss M.
Swan. Mrs. Harry Dalrymple gave
the topic. It was decided to hold a
picnic in July. Mrs. W. McBeath
and Mrs. A. Zaphe were appointed
a sports committee. Flower com-
mittee for May is Mrs. Wallace
Haugh and Mrs. Edgar Allen. The
June meeting will be visitors day
when Bayfield W.A. and all the
ladies of this congregation will be
entertained. Group 4 conducted the
program. A discussion of the study
book, "Growing With the Years,"
with Mrs. Wilmer Broadfoot, lead-
er, assisted , by Mrs. Edgar Allen,
Mrs. Harry Dalrymple and Mrs.
Lorne Wilson, was followed by a
solo by Mrs. Gordon Richardson
and Mrs, T. Wils&i conducted a
contest. A very delicious lunch was
served by Group 4.
A meeting of the 1.O.O.F. was
held in the new lodge rooms over
the blacksmith shop in Brucefield
Wednesday evening. D.D.G.M. Fred
Boyes presided. The main business
of the evening was the appoint-
ment of Alex Boyes as D.D.G.M.
and 'Mr. Taylor as junior warden.
Representatives were present from
Exeter, Hensall, Goderich, Clinton
and Seaforth.
HENSALL
Members of Hensall Legion Lad-
ies' Auxiliary motored to Clinton
Monday and were guests of the.
Clinton Ladies' Auxiliary. Gode-
rich Auxiliary was also guests. Ov-
er one hundred members were
present. A program was enjoyed,
consisting of vocal solos by Miss
Carol Glidden and Mrs. Lawson, of
Clinton, and Mrs, Hill, Goderich;
reading, Mrs. Sheardown, Gode-
rich; piano solos, Mrs. Wm. Brown
and Mrs. Fred Appleby, Mrs. Ap-
pleby for her selections playing
"Tdse Lily" and "Repasz Band,"
The Clinton ladies also presented
a skit. A sing -song was featured
with Miss Fraser, accordionist,
and Mrs. Perdue at the piano. Bin-
go was the highlight of the eve-
ning. Mrs. Wm. Brown, Hensall,
was the winner of the door prize,
and Mrs. Geo. Smale, Hensall, won
the bouquet of flowers for the old-
est member present, Mrs. Byron,
Kyle won the chair prize,
Girl Guides Receive Awards
Prizes and awards were receiv-
ed at the Mother -and -Daughter
meeting of the Girl Guides held . in
their room at the Community
Building Thursday night, Prizes
awarded to girls attending regular
meetings went to Gladys Moir, Ger-
trude Bell and Judy Shaddick; ser-
vice stars for three years, Capt.
Edith Bell, Gertrude Bel!; 2 years,
Margaret Stephan, Marlene Petzke
and. Audrey Walsh; one year,
Eudora Hyde, Joan Johnston, Jean
Lavender, Carol McMurtrie, Gladys
Moir, Judy Shaddick, Nita Smith,
Lola Volland, Jean Soldan, Margar-
eL.Reid, Carol Richardson. Prizes
for girls selling the most tickets
on quilt went to Gertrude Bell,
Nita Snfith, Judy Shaddick, Gladys
Moir, Lola Volland.
Anniversary serviceswill be
held in the U lited Church May 28.
The guest speaker will be Rev. J.
W. Rogers, of Blyth.
At •the United Church last Sun-
day morning, Rev. R. A. Brook de-
livered a very inspiring message.
The choir rendered an anthem, the
soloist being Miss Mary Goodwin.
A basket of flowers in memory of
the late Walter Madge, of Exeter,
a former member of the church for
many years, and an official of the
board, was placed on the Commun-
on table by the family.
Christian Family Day will be ob-
erved in the local churches this
oming Sunday. At the United and
Carmel Presbyterian Churches bap
