Cumulative Effect of Alcohol
Dr. H. M. VERNON, M.D., says "a motorist who drinks a pint
of beer three times, at hourly intervals, gets 1 oz. + 1 oz. -1- 1 oz.
of alcohol into his blood." Alcohol is quickly absorbed into the
blood stream. It is excreted at the rate of 1/3 of an oz. per hour:
so that at the end of the FIRST HOUR 1/3 has disappeTared; by
the second hour 2/3rds has disappeared, and at the end of THREE
hours ALL is clear.
BUT on taking the SECOND drink he gained another ounce
(or 3/3rds), therefore he then had 2/3rds plus 3/3rds. At the end
of two hours from first starting to drink (at which time he takes
his THIRD pint of beer) he loses the second third of an ounce of
alcohol from his first drink, but adds another ounce (or 3/3rds).
Therefore (at 5 p.m.) he has 1/3 + 3/3 + 3/3 = 7/3 tots. in the blood.
All clear
Study this on the clock, and it will be seen that he le not FREE
FROM THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL UNTiL SEVEN HOURS
AFTER TAKING THE LAST DRINK.
"Many motor drivers think that if they take moderate doses of
alcohol they will be all right for a Journey an hour afterwards.,
They do not realize that the effects take such a long time to wear
off. Therefore, drivers should absolutely abstain from all alcoholic
liquifies until they have dobe their day's work."—H. M. Vernon,' MM.
