Phillips in London Free Press) In the days of the Canada Goanpan'y, tt• map. was published and on this •Aourse bf the Aux Saubles; River was accurately shown, sweeping up almost to the present village of Grand Bend and then turning west, to emerge at What is now called Inert Franks. How- e ever, the map distinctly show's Port (Franks as being at the grand bend. This caused the early intending set- tlers some perplexity and William H. Smith, who had no great love for the Canada 6ompany, in 1860 reeords the difficulties of one of these settlers. ,''Through a freak of the late Dr. Dunlop, a plot of land situated at the north-western bend of the Sables Riv- •r was designated by the high sound- ing title of Port Franks, although the coast, at the spot, and for many miles beyond, is composed of hills of shift- ing sand, accumulated no doubt by worth -west storms on the lake, and where, therefore, the idea of making a port must be perfec'Crl.y absurd. Not- etithstanding that the managers of the company must have long since' been aware of this fact, every new map is- auied by them contains Port Franks as large as ever; so that inhabitants of. the neighborhood begin to talk of im- portrng a cargo of magnifying glasses to- enable them to see this wonderful town, which by some magic, has hith- erto managed to evade their searches. When we were first at the spot, some six..years ago; we found nothing there but a sawmill and its appurtenances, • HERE'S WHATTO.
