In the days of the Canada Goanpan'y,

accurately shown, sweeping up almost
to the present village of Grand Bend
and then turning west, to emerge at
What is now called Inert Franks. How-
e ever, the map distinctly show's Port
(Franks as being at the grand bend.
This caused the early intending set-
tlers some perplexity and William H.
Smith, who had no great love for the
Canada 6ompany, in 1860 reeords the
difficulties of one of these settlers.
,''Through a freak of the late Dr.
Dunlop, a plot of land situated at the
north-western bend of the Sables Riv-
•r was designated by the high sound-
ing title of Port Franks, although the
coast, at the spot, and for many miles
beyond, is composed of hills of shift-
ing sand, accumulated no doubt by
worth -west storms on the lake, and
where, therefore, the idea of making
a port must be perfec'Crl.y absurd. Not-
etithstanding that the managers of the
company must have long since' been
aware of this fact, every new map is-
auied by them contains Port Franks as
large as ever; so that inhabitants of.
the neighborhood begin to talk of im-
portrng a cargo of magnifying glasses
to- enable them to see this wonderful
town, which by some magic, has hith-
erto managed to evade their searches.
When we were first at the spot, some
six..years ago; we found nothing there
but a sawmill and its appurtenances,
