While the statement shows a bal-
ance of only $1,748.51 of that date,
this will be inereased by amount due
the town, and -which vein' be paid be-
foret the end of the year.
During •the year just closing, 1938,
taws colleted amounted to $35,436.96,
wlhile arrears paid totalled $8,021.07.

Mr. .T. W. Ortwein. one of Hensall'
teat citizens, will celebrate his
89th birthday on Christmas Day. Mr.
Ortwein, a pioneer business mae, has
been in Hensall for many years.
He is a large property owner. Ac-
tive ia Sabbath school activities, for
twenty-three years he was Superin•
tendert of the Sunday school and ie
arprominemt official in the United
Church.
A ,resident of Hensall for some 17
years, be is general agent for the
Dominion Life Insurance Co. and was
one of the first shareholders in that
•ternmany. He is president of the
Bible Society of Western Ontario,
Mr. Ortwein was born in Tavistock,
spending his early boyhood days
there. later going to Heidelburg where
he was postmaeter, telegraph opera -
ler and store merchant. He also con-
ducted stems at Zurich, Hensel' and
Seaforth
Celebrating with him on his birth-
day will be the members of his fam-
ily, Mrs. J. Brenholt, Kitchener; Mrs.
G. C. Hassell., Altana; Pa.; Alonzo. B.
Ortwein, Detroit; Milteri Ortwein„
London; Mrs. James A. Paterson and
Mrs. M. G. Drysdale, of Hensall. Mr.
Ortwein is wonderfully active for his
years, (hired his own car for bis
business, and is a very early riser.
He is a former reeve and councillor
of Hensel].

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Sydney .Tacobs, of
Seaforth, will celebrate the 66th an-
niversary of their 'wedding at home
here on Christina.; Day. Both are in
Toed health. Mr. Jambs, who is in
his 951111 years, was born en London
Township, and in (872 was married
to Miss Emily Brownell by Rev. C.
Lavelle, one of the early rairuisiens of
the Methodist Church in this town.
With the exception of five years
spent in Bovemanville, they have liv-
ed continuously itt Seatortle For
many yea's Mr. Jecobs, carried on a
tin.smithiug bustinees,. Mrs. Jacobs is
86 years old but is, still able to attend
to all her hougehold duties.

St. James' School Concert
One of the best Christmas pro-
grams of the season was presented ia
the parish hall 021. Wednesday after-
noon by the pupils of St. James'
Scihook It opened' vvieh "The Chaise
ma's Story," a chorus by the senior
girls. Alan Iteare_aad Therese. Ma-
loney took pa.ft-in the public speak-
ing, which followed. The other num-
bers were: ,Recitation, Alice McIv-
er; a harmonica number by Sammy
De Caro, Joan' McMillan, Alice Mc-
Iver and Adrian Bannon; public speak-
ing, Marjoide O'Neil; recitation, Ate
nette Carron; a siong. "Sleigh Bells,"
by the senior girls; recitation, Mary
Ryan; public speaking, Margaret
O'Reilly; selection by the Rhythm
Band consisting of the convent music
pupils; recitastion. Alice Ryan; public
?Speaking, C.reralda Flannery; exercis-
es in physical training by the prim-
ary class; public spealcing, Joan Mc-
Millan; recitation, Anna Eckert; reci-
tation, Kathleen Laudenbach. Santa
Claus then entered and treated, the
children to bags of candy and gifts
supplied by the Catholic Women's
League. Those present were Rev. Fr.
Hussey with many of the parents and
fniends, all of whom complimented
the children on their perfarmanee.
Tuckersmith School Concert
The Christmas concert, held on
Tuesday at S. S. No. 6, Tuck.ersinith,
was meet successful and well carried
out ander the direction of the teacher,
Miss Gladys Coleman. Russel Cole-
man acted as chairman and gave a
short address. Five dialogues which
caused much merriment were present-
ed by the pupils, entitled "Uncle Jon -
