KEY WEST, FLORIDA
Who's Who! What's What and Why?.
(By F., G. Neelin, Seaforth, Ont.)
Dear Expositor: Forty-eight hours
by train from Canadian winter wea-
ther to Florida winter -summer clim-
ate emphasizes its ajccessibility to•
the agedand infirm. 'The name Flor-
ida means "the land of flowers," and
since its discovery by Ponce de Leon
in his quest, for the fouitain of youth,
it has been alternately under the
juirisdietion of Spain, France, Britain
and the United States of America.
The length of the State is 450 miles
long and 100 broad. The Florida
Keys or islands (Spanish Cayo) are
a chain of small keys of coral forma-
tion, numbering into the thousands,
which are mostly submerged during
1nigh tide. The northernmost and
longest of them is Key Largo, where
President Hoover does his fishing,
and the southernmost is Key West on
which the city of Key West is situat-
ed. The original Spanish name was
"Cayo Hueso," meaning Bone Key, as
it was the scene of sanguinary bat-
tles between the native Indians and
Spaniard's. The population of the
city is about 20,000 and its chief in-
dustry is the manufacture of cigars
and a large productive commercial
trade in fish, fruit, tobaccos, vege-
tables and .sponges.
Key West commands the entrance
to the Gulf of Mexico, the Carribean
Sea, and the Panama Canal, and the
U.S.A. government in recognizing its
strategic importance has established
naval and aerial stations, army bar-
racks and a submarine base costing
over a million dollars, thus making
it the marine gateways to the tropics.
Along military lines one of the many
historic points of interest is the
Martello Towers, where Dr. ''Mudd
was incarcerrated for comrplicity with
J. Wilkes Booth and .Madame Surratt
on the assassination of President Lin-
coln in 1565.
Probably the greatest engineering
feat in recent years is the construc-
tion of the Florida East Coast Rail-
way connecting the great terminal
railway city of Jacksonville in North
Florida to Key West, a distance of
150 miles by bridging long stretches
of open sea, submerged swamps and
,shallows with a road bed, the em -

Besides the linking pp of the emery
ald chain of` islands by rail ending at
Key West, there is at present under

way, a continuation • of the famous
Dixie Highwray of the Northern
States and Canada, the bast water
stretch gap of thirty-six miles long
between. No Name Key and Meta-
cunUbe Key is spanned by a ferry
boat that, earriero passengers, autos
and freir*ht. The boat • in plying in-
wardly end outwardly among the
Keys, gives the tourist the joy ride
of a life time through rapturously
experiencing the enchanting, colorful
and incomparable scenic vista of sea,
sky and earth passing as it were in
kaleodoscopic grandeur visions. On
returning from Cuba to Miami, Flori-
da, we travelled over this delightful
route in a pilot -house position for
which your correspondent is especial-
ly indebted far the courtesy to the
Commander of the boat, Captain
Slharpley, a thorough seaman ani'
one of nature's noblemen.
Key West is known as "the Island
"City" and possesses a foreign charm
in its Spanish archite ture of chim-
neyless houses. The sun shines 350
days each year and the splendor of
the tropics is proclaimed through
breeze-sw'eptl shores making winter
and summer co -equal. The salt water
bathing in the ocean is especially
beneficial to humans suffering from
rheumatism and kindred ailments.
Along the tropical wooded shaded
streets is seen the Travellers Palm,
a native of the southern deserts. It
derived its name from the fact that
travellers often "tap" and obtain
water wherewith to quench their
thirst. The spears of the palm al-
ways point due east and west. In
the colorful surroundings there is an
old-world setting in its street vendors
crying their wares in liquid Spanish
volubility and the pleasing custom of
the assemblage of men, women and
children on Saturday evenings on the
Main Street opposite the principal
stores reminding us of a similar
practice in the old hone town.
Fish abound in Key West waters.
Countless varieties are taken from
what is termed "the greatest game
fishing waters in the world." One of
the places of interest to tourists are
"the turtle crawls" which means the
place where th'e turtles are placed
after capture and prior to being
slaughtered for market purposes.
Chief among the many kinds of tur-
tle food is the green turtle, famous
for making soup and so widely priz-
ed. It is a vegetarian feeding on sea
weed and reaches a length of forty-
five inches. It swims with great
swiftness and only comes to the top
of the water to breath and when un-
der the water the nostrils are closed
by a fleshy valve therein. Turtles
come ashore on moonlight nights and
make a hissing noise. When the
female turtle comes ashore for pro-
pagation purposes, it digs a hole
with its hind flappers about two feet
deep and drops eggs in layers of
about 200 and afterwards covers
them carefully with earth, which is
smoothed beyond the indication of dis-
turbance and leaving the hatching of
the eggs to the heat of the sand. The
butchers at the Crawls place the tur-
tle on its back and bleed it from the
throat and after separating the food
portions the by products are com-
mercialized in many forms, chief a-
mong which is shell, grits for poultry
fe ding.
ey West is connected with Hav-
en -Cuba, lay the P. and 0. Steam-
ship line, making a six hours' ocean
trip. It is a delightful ocean experi-
ence during calm weather but quiet
the reverse when a tropical storm
with forty -foot waves raging. Here
a first glimpse of foreign country
touring presents itself through a
number of Spanish half-breeds swim-
ming around the .steamship and div-
ing after sma11 pieces of silver coin
thrown into the ocean by passengers
from the decks. "The breeds" are
expert divers and without fail caught
the coin under water either in the
mouth or hands and when coming to
the surface exhibited the cash accom-
panied by a musical Ki-Ki-Yi song.
A "devil fish" was captured in Key
West waters. It was over eighteen
feet in length and several feet thick.
Its body partook of the shape of the
lower part of an 'anchor and a4 gear-
ed to have two movable heads. Its
strength is as designated when the
harpoons entered its body the boat
containing its captors was rushed)
with almost lightning speed for a
long distance. The sea devil fish are
found only in the gulfs of Mexico and
California in the northern hem-
isphere.
The churches, schools, library and
other e.dacational institutions) exicel
in point of merit. The Citizen is a
daily newspaper. The Whekly Sun is
in its initial numbers, with 'Mr. Ivey
E. Peebles, a clever journalist, as its
editor and publisher. We bequeath-
ed the slogan of ze-olde-time Sea -
forth Sun for its especial benefit, "I_`
you see it in the Sun it's so."
The 'Chamber of Commerce and
citizens generally of Key West are
ever on the alert to make tourist vis-
itors feel at home and the basis of
that friendly atmosphere may be
found in "I like to live in a house
by the side of a road and be a friend
to man."
Grow More Barley.
A partial solution of the problem
of marketing Canada's wheat crop
will probably be found in the growing
of less wheat and more barley this
year anyway. Barley is the great
staple grain of the feeder of live
stock, yielding the biggest returns ex-
pressed in terms of animal nutriment
per acre. In other words, more ac-
tual food is produced in a normal year
from one acre of barley than from
any other grain. There is in Ontario,
too, a steady market at better than
world prices for a large volume of
good barley for industrial purposes,
and when it comes to the building up
of poor soil, or they reclaiming of
weed -infested areas, there is no other
grain crop that can be utilized to such
advantage. The present barley acre-
age in Ontario is only about one-half
of the combined acreage in fall and
spring wheat, but present prospects
point to this situation .being reversed
with profits to the producer and the
pmvdnce as a whole,
