Lesson foi April 29th, 1928 ' .-Lesson Topic -The Cost of Dis cipleship, 4 1 Lesson Passagie.-Mark 10:17-27 12 : 41-44. ,Golden TextjMatt- 6 : 21. , We have here a most interestin narrative. The subject of it was . ,young man, in the bright and beat tif.1 pri i. me of life; a ruler of th synagogue; an exceedingly rich ma and, besides, he possessed a winnin personality and a high moral cha acter. . Our Lord was on His last journe from Peraea to Bethany. This youn ,ruler, in breathless -haste, lest h should miss his opportunity befor the Saviour departed, came runnin up and fell on his knees before hin -His manner of addressing him wa respectful and reverential. By th title "Good Master," he acknowledg ed his authority as a teacher, an his kindness of heart seen in the wa he received little children and folde them in his arms. At once Jesu used this title to raise the youn man's thoughts to God and to him self as a tea6er sent from God ' By the question he put to Jesu we see that, with all this youn man's advantages, he felt the nee of something better. ,Raving com into the possession of great wealth I bo still felt a void within his sou that the world could not fill. -H had heard Jesus say, "Suffer littl children to come unto me, and forbi them not; for of such is the king dom. of heaven." It was not curios ity but a deep sense of the worth o his soul, that prompted him to as "What shall I do that I may inheri eternal life?" In his answer Jesu referred to those commandment that deal with man's relationship t man and, the young man listening seemed to say, "If these be the com mandments which you include i your direction, and if these be a'. then have I obeyed them -every on of them -from my youth up; the have been the rule of my life. Wh lack I yet?" The Saviour did no question this declaration for, had h not been a young man of blarnele6 character, he could not have attain ed to the office of ruler of the sym gogue. He thought only of his ou ward conduct. He did not remembe that "every imagination of th thoughts of man's heart is only ev continually."' He w as outwardl moral, but a -stranger to spiritual r ligion; he had a form of godlines but lacked' the power. Christ tol him with all his perfectionsi ther was a great lack and that was lov Christ tested the young ruler on thi point. "You must lo,ve the Lor your God with all your mind, , -an soul, and strength; and heart, an your fellow -man as yourself. G then, and act out that great principl by selling all that you -have, and dis tributin.- it to relieve the necessitie of your poorer brethren, and t maintain and promote the service o God." The test was found too sev ere for the young man's morality bis love was more of outward obsery ance than of spiritual obedien "he was -weighed in the balance an found wanting." The young rule went away - grieved. Jesus turne4 and looked upon His disciples an said to them, "How hardly shall the, that haVe riches enter into the king dom. of 'God." On seeing that thi saying astonished tgm He explaine HAs meaning by adding the words "trust," thus showing them that it I "the love of money that is the roo of evil." The young ruler wante to make sure of eternal life but th cross was too -great a price f or hin to pay so for the time being at leas he turned from it to his earthly bos sessions. / 12:41-44. 1 - It is a touching picture, this of the lonely woman, who had lost her bus bFnd, whose means were scanty and whose life was. obscure and cheer less. But she had found strength and consolation. in waiting upon God. And the temple, the appointed place of worship, was very dear to ____ - --- from which she could not absent when the sacred services were proceeding, nor could she with hold her little gift in passing the treasury. ,And thus she wa§ n-oticed by,the MasteT, and her memory was immortalized, and her action has be- come a -model amnd an iusiration to Christ's people through all time - (Condensed fronr The Pulpit Com- mentayv . ). I I I . I .
