• qa Temperance Column- Edited by tate Mildmay Branch of the W.0 T.II.. Him. - If we look at the common meaning of the word, we shall find it means temper- anient of body or mind or aptitude gain= ed by practice. Habit in my estimation, is either man's best friend or his -Worst enemy. It can exalt him to the highest pinnacle of virtue, honor and happiness, or plunge -him to tie lowest depths of -vice, shame .and misery. One author has said "Habit in a child is at first like a spider's web; if neglect- ed or unnoticed, it beconfes a thread -of twine; next a cord of rope -finally a < cable—then who can break it? We may form habits of industry or idleness, frugality or extravagance, of patience or impatience, truth or false- hood, temperance or intemperance, in - fact there is not a virtue nor a vice, not an act of body or mind to which we may not be chained down by the despotic power of habit. It is More difficult to break away from a habit than to form one. Few people form a habit of wrong doing deliberately or willfully, they glide into them by de- grees and before they are aware of their enemy's power the habits are formed and confirmed. Take for exarnple those persons who are chained down by . the -tyranny of liquor and tobacco and if -questioned they will tell you that they glided into the habit of using the stim- ulants, by degrees the habit grew until it mastered them and nothing but -res- . elute and persistent efforts could break the degrading habit. _ Great care should be exercised in avoiding evil habits in youth. It is very • difficult to go through this life and main- tain an honorable character when we have been careless in youth and have allowed little habits of vice to creep in- to -our lives. When we leave our homes - and are cast out on the wide ocean of life, without a chart, without a magnet. sOh! what anguish fills our souls and how we groan under -the tyranny of a bad hab- it. This is especially the case with him - who is ruled by the tyranny of intemper- =.ance. We cannot view our own habits ;n the same way that we can view thorn others, and therefore 1 think it is the -duty of individuals to assist each other in breaking or crushing any evil habit that might spring up or creep into their lives; and tothelp each other to build up characters that will: honor and elevate -them throughout the daily walks of life in this - world and fit them for the :fife to _come. Now we know that there are - many of sour fellow creatures who have- become slaves to the habitual use of tobacco and liquor—probably led into the habits thoughtlessly—through surrouiading in- fluence. It is the duty of every human- , creature ups the face of the earth to he* his fellow creature to escape evils .of all and: every description; and there is =a great evil -throughout our land that -may be removed and swept out of reach .of the rising generation if the people 'will just consider the matter in a proper light. The great evil I speak of bas rained thouMands, nay millions, and many more are ion the wretohedpath, near the brink of ruin. • It is the terrible evil of the Liquor Traffic. Now the time is coming when the people Will have the opportunity- and the light to say Nheth er they will allow such- an to, infest' and corrupt the morals of our nation;, whether they will allow their sons and ,daughters to be led into forming habits that are demoralizing, destructive and degrading, when by a little -exertion and determination . the_ evil .influences may 13e banished from our land and the weak - -and -`passi©nat-e left free from exposure -to such evils. The Prohibition Question should not be considered .from a - political stand point. - All "party work" should be cast aside. Every voter , should consider i` that in. casting 'his *votel e is 'either working for God, pr assisting Satan. That he is not -simply to assist the "Re- form Party" or the -"Conservative," but -.that he is to assist humanity at large - .that bis vote will help to rescue some perishing soul, -or, help to send it to the a`_;botl imleea, pit:- Ohl my friend let not - : 'vont, vote- ie cast for the latter purpose i for the -former. Vote for Prohi bitdoa aed- use all your influence -+be: ;half .af it. = If: the ' Liquor Traffic- were retnoyed, it would: Abe- Winch easier for ou young .people -to form and cult trate habits of piety and usefulness and so be .clinic joy to their parents.
